I know this sounds very selfish, but I come to this board to get "away" from life and have some fun talking about Disney Resorts. With hurricane season already here, I know there are many (including myslef) who are concerned about their vacations and hurricanes and there are many questions that need answering.

However, may of us here are from Florida and other areas that get direct hits. It's more than "What am I going to do about my vacation", it's about our homes, futures and our very lives. If the moderators could create a special board for hurrcane concerns (much like they did for the codes), I (am I'm sure many others) would appreciate it.

I know people are paying thousands for their vacations and I'm not trying to make light of that. I'm just saying that this is where we come to talk about our favorite resorts, and when I read about hurricanes it really stresses me out and I can't enjoy myself here. I just wanted to add that I don't even read the posts. Just seeing "hurricane" in the title, stresses me out.

Thanks for you consideration!!!!

Hey great idea suzy!!! I am with you. on this one.. especially since we live on Merrit Island and Disney is our official evacuation plan!!!!!! Although i will say last year got to be a bit expensive after staying there so much then going right back after we had no power for 2 weeks :flower:

Maybe no one else shares this concern? I could understand a sub-board for codes, because that's an on-going topic. If they create a sub-board for this topic, where do they stop? Pretty soon, people will begin asking for sub-boards for any topic they don't want to read about or scroll past.

Hurricanes are seasonal and this is probably just a temporary bump in threads about it (actually, I've not noticed that many). They don't bother me at all -- I just scroll past them.

Awww :( Suzy, I can't say that I totally understand how you feel because I've never lived in a hurricane-prone area, but I do understand your feelings about this. We cruised last Aug/Sept right between 2 major Hurricanes (because of Hurricane Frances our 7-night Disney cruise got extended to a 10-night cruise, I couldn't fully enjoy it really because I knew that so many peoples' lives and homes were being destroyed while I was out on a luxury cruise ship enjoying myself).

When we got back to Port (and we couldn't even return to Port Canaveral because of the destruction), we saw firsthand all of the destroyed properties and trees, along the way. There was still no electricity, etc.

I remember there being big debates on the cruise boards about this exact subject. Some of us were very much sensitive to what the residents were going through, while others were ONLY concerned about their vacations. I guess over on the cruise board it is very common to see the hurricane threads, I have to say I was surprised to see some pop up over here on the resorts thread too.

I don't know if the moderators can or will create a separate board for hurricanes, but I wanted you to know that some of us out here do care and are concerned you and all the Florida DISers and all residents. :grouphug:

Thanks, Terry!!! I know there have only been a couple of threads so far, but it's hardly begun. Last year there were TONS of hurricane threads on this very board.

I don't know about a whole board, but what about a permanant thread entitled...........

"Hurricane Central"

............where people can post their concerns and get updated info.??

What do you think?? That way it would be on the boards, but only in one thread so you wouldn't have to check it if you didn't want to. :flower:

I agree it needs it's own board.

With that one hurricane in the pacific---we saw 3 threads on the CB alone just for that storm.

When something is really threating---it will be on EVERY board--and it does get annoying. Mostly b/c of the Chicken Little phenomenon "The sky is falling".

Since Florida got struck 3 times---one by a hurricane that bypassed, turned around and came back...people are more skittish of the letters: TS/TD/H. And a thread is going to pop up each and every time. And the sad things is---they aren't all coming for Florida (which is not sad for me :earboy2: )....but then you've got those in the Carolina's and such that can be impacted. Even so--the postings get overwhelming.

Just my 2 cents from a Floridian who evacuated twice--but who was lucky enough that one of the evacs timed with a trip to Hawaii--board up one night and on my way to hula the next morning.

Suggestion: Why not a dedicated board for WDW Weather? This would allow for covering all types of weather... from the heat/humidity of August to the nasty hurricanes!

I know I'm already checking the 10-day forecasts on weather.com for my trip next week.

I'm still out on whether huricane posts will be a big problem. I do simpathize with Floridians who are worried about more then there vacations, but I liked knowing about the hurrican info from those in the area last year as we have friend who had just moved to Florida.

My big concern is about sub board all together. I don't really like them. They are difficult for me to remember to look at. I am afriad I will miss the next code release because I won't remember to look at the codes board. I wish the code posts were still on the main resorts board.

I figure if I don't want to read a post about codes, or huricanes for that matter, I just don't have to open it. I'm not saying my way is right, just that I feel the more "sub boards" we have the less information I feel I get.

This is a great idea. Even if it is just a sticky at the top of one of the main pages. I know my DH is always concerned about the weather! It might actually give him a reason to check out the DIS, instead of always giving me a hard time about being on. :goodvibes

Susy, As far as a sticky post experience has shown that most people don't bother to read the stickys or do a search before they post.

I agree it got old real fast last year with the hurricanes. My house sustained damage from the hurricanes and I saw some folks that really didn't care about the damage that occurred in FL.

I did get better at ignoring those posts but it is hard. I have passed your concerns along.

Hmmm... a board for weather isn't a bad idea. Not only just for hurricanes but a place where people could talk about what to pack and driving conditions, etc. I know I always post looking for advice on what to bring right before we leave town, do we need jackets, etc. It would be cool if you could get a board host who was a meteorologist! Or someone who keeps up with the forecast. ;) Maybe even links to local Orlando radar, seasonal info about allergies, heat index, etc.

I think a weather board is a good idea, but people are alwasy asking what "resort" will treat them best during a hurricane and then the post ends up on the resort board. Oh, boy! Those threads are hard to read. I am worrying about my roof blowign off and windows blowing in and people want to know if the food court will be open. There are a lot of questions about weather and I never know where to post them. I keep checking for our trip next week. So far so good.

I keep forgetting about the codes sub-board. I even missed the last AP code release, which I was waiting for.

If those posts bother you so much, why do you read them? :confused3

Are you planning to request a sub board for all of the other planning boards? I'm sure the theme parks, transportation, and cruise line boards will be full of hurricane threads.

If there's a weather board, I'm sure a time will come when someone that's planning a trip to WDW, will complain that there are way to many DCL related threads. Of course they'll want a sub board on the weather board for DCL weather concerns. :rotfl: :rotfl2:

How hard is it for us to just skip past the things we're not interested in reading about? Who ever said we had to read every thread we come across?

True. No one is forcing me to read posts. I can just take a break if want until hurricane season passes. I can still "get away" on Josh Holloway's fansite, no hurricane talk over there.

They were overwhelming and populating on all the boards. That is why some requested a separate board.

And to boot---the weather advisories get posted on several boards--sometimes several times.

So when I have to board my house and worry that it will get blown away--it is sometimes VERY hard to skip over the threads.

Well in "our" defense--we have 2 small children and evacuated to Disney for Frances. Knowing how long facilities will be open is kind of an important thing. Knowing that it can get sketchy--hubby changed our ressies to WL and we still loaded our refrigerator cooler with stuff and brought it along. The info on these boards helped with that and my 4yo and near 2yo were adequately entertained and fed for the 4 days were were there.

We were a hoot showing up at WL. Our luggage.....and our laundry baskets & boxes & bags of household items. But yet, they weren't surprised at all our stuff. Since the hurricanes could cross Orlando--we opted to not leave items in the car b/c obviously hurricanes are predictable when they are close--but the damage is not.

Now--most of the population that will be at WDW are NOT hurricane evacuees--but to some it is good information to know (on a weather board ;))....so they know if they need to stock up on items and such. I read several posts such as this--and you could really tell the "whiners" from those who were really looking for tips and advice on how to handle the situation.

For me--thank goodness that health club was open. When I got on hubby's nerves....I went running. I was training for a marathon at the time--so running for a while on the treadmill several times a day was an excellent stress reliever. Watching the news 24/7--not so good for the stress though.

Having a dedicated board would be wonderful---and come hurricane time--that is hte weather that impacts the area and the most people. And we can keep the fun/planning boards clear of all that---b/c people do have lives outside of the strikezone--and those in the strikezone, do like to get away from the H talk even when it is about to hit.
