Moderators: An idea for this board....

Hi:

I don't know how feasible this would be, but I'm wondering if we could "anchor" some threads at the top of this board. For example, the current thread about the Banana Boat ride at Castaway Cay is full of great, helpful info. But many of us plan our cruises so far in advance that it's likely that the thread will end up on page 99 by the time we're ready to cruise and would want the info fresh in our minds. (We will be doing the Banana Boat on CC and I KNOW I'll forget a lot of the good info on that thread by the time August comes around. lol)

Also, there are many excursions that we need info and opinions about, and those threads often only last a few days, then a new one will pop up, then a new one after that, etc. So... kind of like over on the Resorts Board, they have some of the different resorts' "FAQ" threads anchored, I'm wondering if we could get some SPECIFIC excursion threads started and/or anchored. If that would be too specific, then how about some Port Threads started and anchored?? I think that would be very helpful for when we're trying to find out which excursions are better than others, for each port.

This was just an idea, and I think it's a good one. Anyone else think this is a good idea?? :teeth:

Thanks! :)

Seaspray (or anyone else) - if you want to post here a list of current useful threads we can add them to the thread that's already stuck at the top of the board which contains some FAQ's linked inside. That way we'll just have them all in one place. It works better than having a zillion individual threads all stuck up top - half the first page would be full up with them in no time otherwise ;)

This won't work for people that won't find these boards until some time in the future, but one of the things I do when I find useful info., is I copy and paste the info into a file in my documents. I have St. Marteen files and subfiles for different excursions that people have talked about. I have a hairbraiding file, a tip file, packing list...you get the idea :) They're all under the main file Cruise04 :teeth:

Thanks Penny for your hard work and Sea Spray for thinking of others :)

Thanks Penny! Would these threads be able to be added-to (replied to), once they are added to that thread? This way, people who have cruised recently (as time goes by), could always add up to date info. Thanks again :)

Ok, my first nominee for "Useful Thread" to be added to the already-existing thread at the top of the Cruise Board, is the Banana Boat on Castaway Cay thread, which was started by B&T. Here's the link to that thread: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=510441

One thing that I really, really wish we could do is (politely) stop people from adding unnecesary posts to the FAQ threads. It is very annoying when every other post is someone saying "thanks" or "nice thread" or relaying some anecdote which contributes no helpful info on the thread.

I actually went to one of the threads and rather tediously copied and pasted the actual info to a blank wordperfect file and it was a small fraction as long as printing the thread itself. A big part were the superfluous comments.............

Double edged sword Fred. Tediousness, yes, but people do like to be thanked for their efforts. And sometimes they should :)

I never said that people don't like to be thanked for their efforts, did I? I am not sure where that dig, not well disguised with a smiley icon, came from?? Sorry you chose to completely miss my point.

I would think that people are mature enough to understand that repeated generic "good hints" comments are not really necessary and clutters up what could otherwise be a really helpful thread. I think it defeats much of the purpose of a thread alleging to put all the helpful hints in one spot (so you don't have to pick through posts to pick them out) if you have frequent posts which are not helpful hints.

One can politely accomplish the end result. That is why I posted on this thread which was directed to the moderators, so they could possibly put a note, used fairly often on other boards, which says something to the effect of "Please post thread-specific info only to assist us in making this as uncluttered and helpful as possible." I specifically said that I wish this could be POLITELY done.

Oh my gosh! That was so not a dig. Believe me if it was, I wouldn't have disguised it. What's the point in that? I just said what I thought, just as you did.

I get your point. And I stand by mine. Just a friendly observation (hence the smiley). Abosolutely no dig intended. Sorry you took it that way and I am really not sure why you did

Forget it CRB#33. I read your post and that was NOT a dig imho.
I could give Fred a legitimate dig if he wanted one but life is too short and your comment was right on.
:p <- Genuine smiley and not sarcastic in anyway.

Cheers,
Grumbo

SeaSpray -- This doesn't sound very workable to me. I don't think we'd ever agree upon which threads are "anchor-worthy."
Since this is obviously a concern for you, I'd suggest that you go "low-tech": print out the messages that appeal to you and put them into a file or a notebook. That's what I do!

I didn't think that "we", the users of this board, would necessarily be the ones to choose which threads. I think it'd be pretty obvious to the moderators which are the most informative, so they'd anchor those (or, as Penny suggested, add to the already-existing thread at the top of the board) which they thought would be the most help to the most cruisers. WebmasterPenny asked for a list of useful threads, anyone can make a suggestion :)

As far as capturing the info for myself and saving it into a folder, that's a great idea, but I like the idea of having an open thread on individual ports and/or excursions so that as more and more recent cruisers return, they can add their up-to-date info and experiences with us :)

WebmasterPenny: Another good thread to add would be the recent thread on the "Romantic Escape at Sea" thread where recent cruisers were adding in what they experienced with this! Thanks! :)

I, for one, think its not a bad idea at all...and here I've been printing out things and making a notebook of what I've found interesting...Such a waste of trees...:earsgirl:

Awww, come on guys, there's really nothing to fall out about here :)

If there are any threads which people feel are useful and/or address FAQ's then there is no harm in adding them to the thread already stuck at the top of the page :) It's just some links after all - all the orginal threads will still be there bouncing around on the main forum just as before - doing their job and helping people by giving them information...just as their meant to :)

As I said before, any threads you want to add, post the <i>link</i> in this thread and when there are a few the mods can review them all and decide whether they are 'worthy' ;)

Cheers
