We are attending mnsshp 9/30 and I'm stressing about costumes for the kids. DS 9 and DS 6 want to dress up but the costumes are heavy for Florida weather. I can't find costumes here where I live (PA) that are light enough for summer type weather. So I am considering halloween t-shirts for the kids. Does anybody think that they will still feel like a part of things or is a costume a must?
Any opinions out there?
Thanks.

A few years back, we went to the first Halloween party of the year. We are also from PA, and I also brought hotter costumes, at least for my son. I thought the nights would be cool enough for him to be tigger, which was just sweatshirt material, not the big heavy furry costume. It was well into the 80's that day, and really humid. I was in a poodle skirt costume and my DD was a 50's girl with the skirt and short skeeved shirt, and my other DD was Cinderella. My skirt had tulle under it and it was so hot and I was sweaty, and that tulle kept sticking to my legs all night. It was gross. lol I ended up putting my DS 2 in a t shirt my mom made.. she made shirts for all of us, but her, my dad and my DS wore them to the party. They were orange t shirts that she painted jackolantern faces on. I think alot of people are in costumes, but the rest are in halloween shirts.

YOu kids will be so busy with all the fun and excitement of the Halloween party, that if they arent wearing costumes, they wont notice! Just make them or buy some great boyish ( monsters, bats, skulls ) t shirts and they will fit right in. I know Target sells very cheap t shirts for halloween. get them now though!! I just bought my DS 3 one, and it said here comes trouble with lots of cute monsters, spiders, bats on it. 4 bucks!! I know they have them for the boys size 4-7 too.

Good Luck and have fun! THe party was great fun!

Add me to this list! I finally convinced my boys to go with their sports--one is wearing his soccer uniform, the other football, without the pads. (unfortunately Eagles--we tried to raise him right, being from Pgh and Steeler fans!!!) I'm getting DH a ref shirt and whistle. Youngest still wants to be Harry Potter--this is the first year I'm glad the costumes are thin--his robe and glasses will go over any shorts and tshirt. I've got my poodle skirt ready.

EAGLES??? EAGLES??????????????????

lol

GO STEELERS!!

The sports costumes are great ideas.

Smydovro- what did your boys WANT to be? Maybe we can come up with a way to make something similar that wont be as hot!

pennst8r-
I was so hung up on the Eagles thing, I didnt read the rest of your post...LOL

I did the poodle skirt thing too. Mine was a one piece costume. White short sleeved blouse attatched to the poodle skirt. One word of advice... If that skirt has tulle or netting under it.. and its hot the day of your party.. CUT IT OFF!!! I walked out of MNSSHP at midnight, STILL SWEATY, and that tullle was STILL sticking to my legs. UGH!! lol

I KNOW!!! We abuse him so much for it! But we moved out here and his friends are all Eagles fans....peer pressure already and he's only 10!
At least the other 2 are still Steelers fans.

I'm making my skirt--I just got felt, for the exact reason you mention! I plan on putting a white sleevless shirt and a letterman sweater with it. Made sure the sweater is cotton not wool! If it's hot, I'll tie it on my waist.

I was in a wedding in June once with tons of tulle under the "pretty" bridesmaids dresses---we snuck into a room at the church and ripped it all out---I wonder what they thought when they found it all?

My DS (4) is going to be DArth Vadar. But instead of pants and long sleeves, he will wear black shorts and a black t-shirt with the cape and mask. It doesn't have to be perfect, just work something out that will go with shorts instead.

We had the perfect costume but they don't seem to be restocking it. We were putting my little DS and our friends' DSs in M&M costumes. We are having a very hard time finding a cool costume now.

:rotfl: Lynne!
I can just see you ripping off your tulle and ditching it in the church!!!

I was miserable with that stuff sticking to my legs all night. I kept saying "its going to cool down when the sun sets... WRONG... Its going to HAVE to cool down by 9pm.... WRONG... WHY ISNT IT COOLING DOWN???" :rotfl2:

You know us in PA.. we are usually stuffing snowsuits under our halloween costumes!!! hahahah

You probably wont need your lettermans sweater if you are going early October. I had my hair in a ponytail, and the scarf that was for around my neck, I tied it in my hair. Too hot for anything to be on my neck.

We had fun at the Halloween party. We did that once, and decided we like the Christmas party better. But we may have to get back there again now that DS knows what halloween and trick or treating is all about. Might have to try this again next year!!

Well. heres a big GO STEELERS to the rest of your family. ANd hoping Big Ben can play. I have to take my DD's to their fast pitch softball game.. so I have to TAPE the game and watch it later!!!

Two years ago we arrived in Orlando with homemade Davy Crockett (fleece)and Eric the Red Viking (faux fur) costumes for our DSs. Sitting outside waiting for our rental car and wilting in the heat despite the fact that it was 11pm, I knew they couldn't go to MNSSHP in those. Next day we went to MGM. I bought Jedi Academy trainee t-shirts and caps for them at the Star Tours shop. We called the kids Junior Jedis. Were they the most creative costumes at MNSSHP? No, but the boys were comfortable and still wear those shirts and hats.

The other costumes worked great in the 30 weather we had up north on Halloween. :cold:

I bought DS 9 and DS 6 halloween t-shirts at old navy and explained that we just couldn't dress up because it will be hot there. They hate being hot so they agreed. Thanks for the responses.
