MNSSHP Costume Clarification

I have purchased tickets for 10/26 for MNSSHP. I have read many posts about adults dressing in costumes. I just read on another board that anyone over 18 "cannot" dress in costume! HUH? Someone posted that they called twice and they were going as Donald and Daisy Duck (adults). They were told both times that adults cannot dress in costume more specifically they cannot dress in "Disney characters". Apparently, there are concerns that someone would mistake them for a "cast member." Can someone clarify this for me? This doesn't seem correct--at least I hope not since I've purchased costumes for my daughter and myself and they are Disney characters. This is our first time to MNSSHP and we have been so looking forward to dressing up for the party! Thanks.

I haven't been to MNSSHP yet. This year is our first trip. I do remember reading though that old teens and adults couldn't dress in any costume that closely resembled a Disney character. This is for the purpose of not being confused w/ a CM. I would ask though on the thread at the top of the page in regards to MNSSHP.

Wow, this is very interesting to me, because last year, my DH and I dressed up like Princess Aurora and Prince Phillip. We had no problems at all getting in.

We had actually purchased our costumes from Disneyland and they were rather authentic. A few little kids approached me for autographs, but I just laughed and said I was dressed up for Halloween.

We saw lots of other adults dressed up as Disney characters too...Malificent, Evil Queen, etc.

If this is a policy, it's brand new for this year. I can't imagine this is true though...not with all the adult Disney costumes they sell on property and at the Disney store.

If you resemble the Disney characters too much they will not let you in. I saw quite a few Belles and Jasmines being turned away. This only goes for adults as they do not want anything to think you are a CM. I also saw Jack Skellingtom turned away too. He had gotten the costume with the big fake head and he was not let through the gate. Is has been this way since I started going a few years ago. You can have authentic all you want but if you look too much like one of theirs they won't let you in. Also the DD costumes probably cover the head so that is a no no.

I saw someone wearing the Jack Skellington costume with the big head (sold at the Disney shops) last year at MNSSHP.

I have a Malificent costume I was thinking about wearing, but now you have me nervous.

Can anyone confirm if there is actually a policy pertaining to adults costumes at MNSSHP?

This was NOT the case last year when we went Halloween night to MNSSHP!!! Our group of eight had five adults all decked out in costume to include an Ariel (my sis), a great Cruella Da Ville (my mom), Peter Pan (my Dsis fiance), generic but authentic pirate (my DH), and the fairest of them all, Snow White (ME!!) Ariel and Snow White dresses obtained by-none other than-the Disney store!

My nephew (age 14 at the time) was Jack Skellington complete with costumed headpiece-he was admonished a couple of times early on in the evening about wearing his "head" (it completely covered his head with cut eye-holes-yes, the one they sell in the Disney store), but by 9:30pm or so he didn't have any problems from CMs. We also saw at least two more "Jacks" in the same outfit, head and everything! I have to say-both Jack and myself had people come up for autographs or pictures. It was hilarious and SO MUCH FUN!!! My nephew stole the night with his "Jack" antics...he was so natural in his role; you never would have known he was only 14!! (a future career as a costumed Disney character???)

Needless to say, my DH and I are dressing up again for this year's MNSSHP Halloween night unless we hear otherwise! It makes the night that much more fun!!

Let me reiterate that this is what I saw. I also read on these boards last year of some getting turned away for looking too much like the characters. The guy I saw in the Jack costume was extremely tall and skinny. I would have never known it was not a CM working at WDW. So just buying a costume at the Disney store isn't going to get you kicked out. I believe it is your appearance as a whole. I have only been to 2 MNSSHPs so far and saw many if not most adults dressed in Disney costumes and none had a problem or they would not have been in the parks. Just having on a costume that looks authentic doesn't mean anything as I saw many a unappealing Belles, Sleeping Beauties, and Snow Whites. They might have had the costumes right but their faces could not have been mistaken for WDW characters! My mom and I are going as Mouseketeers and believe me we will not be mistaken for anything else besides over aged and possibly overweight mouseketeers! LOL! So I would go and not worry about it. I think it rare that WDW turns some away.

Absolutely you can dress up! We went as Minnie Mouse and The Big Bad Wolf and there were NO problems whatsoever. We also saw quite a number of adults dressed up. I believe the "stories" of people getting turned away for looking too much like the characters are just that "stories." I saw many many adult cinderella's, princes', cruella's, just to name a few. I didn't see one person get turned away for their costume, so go, dress up and enjoy yourself!

We'll be there on Halloween Night (dh is dressing as BBW again, I am going to go as myself, scary enough, lol)

I am NOT telling a story. I am not telling you something I "heard". I'm telling you something I SAW with my own eyes. The man and his wife were very angry that they would not allow her husband in. They were downright irate! I thought they were going to call security. They were right in front of us in line at the turnstiles. They ranted about how they paid to get in and it was ridiculous and no one warned them. The CM was very upset afterwards but told my mom that the man looked too much like the real thing and that is not allowed. So that is what I saw. I know they allow all kinds of costumes there but apparantly thought this guy looked too real. I too saw more Disney costumes then ever but none that I saw actually looked like they could get away with being the real thing. They also were not letting anyone take in swords or guns.

My son dressed as Peter Pan last Oct and took in a sword we bought at PotC earlier that day. I guess the short knife that came with the costume wasn't acceptable for him. I can understand not letting guns in, but they sell about 14 different types of swords at PotC.

My only issue with the sword is storing/securing it while on rides. Then, predictably, my wife lets him choose a ninja costume for this year. No one ever listens to me.

I remember getting a letter last year about the "no knifes/swords" policy and using the term "not too scary" costumes.

I also heard on the monorail from other guests that they were told by their front desk that adults cannot wear Disney Costumes.

My DH was the Beast but his face was exposed so he couldn't pass for the real thing but he was still approached by children thinking he was the real Beast!

I can understand why Disney reserves this right (to turn away people who are too 'real' looking) but I think they need to get the word out better.

Most of the people I saw Halloween night were, indeed, in Disney Costumes and quite good ones but I could tell they weren't the real characters. My DD, age 3, on the other hand, was very upset that we couldn't go over and hug Ariel!

I don't think that's very nice to say that when you just heard from a previous poster first hand their experience. You are basically calling them a liar!

I did notice that on the WDW site with the explanation of the party it does state that

"guests, especially children, are encouraged to dress-up"


I kind of wondered after reading that how they felt about adults dressing up. I can understand them not wanting people dressed up for the party to be confused for the characters.

I think we'll either go with a really simple pirate theme or just a Disney/halloween shirt - I assume they will probably sell them there?

They even have special "Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party" T-shirts that you can buy at the Eporium (sp?) on your way in!!!

I regret not picking one of those up last year! We saw them at the gift shop by the Pooh ride. They were so cute but we didn't feel like standing in line. This year we are definitely going to get them. I would dress up for the party though. I borrowed a real doctor scrub set from my neighbor and it was so much fun. I had all kinds of people coming up to me telling me their aches and pains! We all had a great time! This year two of us are going as mouseketeers. Can't wait!

Thank you Beattyfamily! I felt I was being called a liar after that post! There is no reason for me to make up such a silly thing. As far as that guy in the Jack costume the CM did give him the option of "checking" his head at the gate and ging headless to the party! LOL! Of course he said no!

No problem. I just don't like to see others call people liars or get testy for no good reason. I value everyone's opinions and experiences regarding WDW and that's why I come here!

Have fun! We're not going this year; we're doing MVMCP, but we're doing MNSSHP again next year!

We will be going to the one on the 16th. I have yet to get the shirts made up. You would think it simple to get a plain white shirt with our names on it but we have no T-shirt shops around here. I suppose I could make them but I don't know who sells iron on letters. What does your costume consist of? Shirt and ears? My mother wants to have the name Annette on hers instead of her own! LOL!
