So this will be our first trip to Disney and we want to do this party. Am I right to assume from reading posts that when you go to the party there are characters in a certain place for meet and greets or are they scattered all over the park?

They each have their own area.

The characters that do normal meets everyday (the princesses in Fairytale Hall, Tiana, Tinker bell, Mickey Mouse, etc) will be in their normal meet and greet spots. The Princesses will be accompanied by their princes. The 'special' characters in addition to these will each have their own spot, and some switch out throughout the night (for example, Tarzan, Jane and Terk all switch out so you may be lucky and see all three, or you might just get Jane and Terk, or just Jane and Tarzan, etc) The seven dwarfs meet together, Jack Skellington and Sally meet together, and Lotso, Jafar, etc will have their own spots. The majority of the villains will be part of the Villains show they do a few times in front of the castle, and you can meet them briefly in certain spots near the castle to mingle with.

How long are the lines to meet character typically.

Anyone know where the dwarfs normally meet? I'm sure their line will be insane but it would be really cool to get a family pic with the dwarfs

Last year the dwarfs were in Fantasyland, next to the Castle Wall - my wait was only 15 min, though that's uncharacteristically short.
