It's January 1, 2008 - time to make a resolution for the new year. Mine is simple, to run a marathon (26.2 miles) and to lose 26.2 pounds - thus, 26.2 x 2!

Rewind back to January 2006 - I was in WDW for New Year's. I saw information in DTD about marathon weekend. I thought to myself - if I could run (at all!) I would love to run at Disney. When I get home, I look on the internet and see that there will be an inaugural 1/2 marathon at Disneyland in September. I joked with my family that I should get a free trip to CA if I could train and run a 1/2 marathon. Challenge accepted....

OK, I have 9 months to change from an overweight gal whoworks long hours and NEVER exercises to a "runner". How to start? 1) New job - less hours, more time to start exercising. 2) Join a gym - My gym is small group format led by a personal trainer. I started weight training 3 times a week. Consistently. Then I learned how to run. Seriously. I couldn't even run to the end of my block. I ran my first 5K race on March 19, 2006. I trained all spring and summer to be able to run 13.1 miles. Long runs every Sunday morning at 7am. The result - I completed the Disneyland 1/2 marathon and earned my Sleeping Beauty Castle medal!

It's 2007. I'm still weight training and running. I added spinning 1-2 times a week for additional cardio. I completed 3 1/2 marathons during the year - Chicago Distance Classic; Disneyland 1/2 Marathon; Nike+ 1/2 Marathon. 2007 was also the year of Disney races - I traveled to Disney A LOT and ran in the Minnie Marathon 15K, the Race for the Taste 10K, and the Tower of Terror 13K.

Today is January 1, 2008. When I look back at the past 2 years, I have accomplished so much - I lost 50 pounds, I went down 4 clothing sizes, and I completed 4 1/2 marathons, a 15K, a 13K, 2 10K's, 4 8K's, and many 5K's.

So what's missing? The holy grail of running, 26.2 miles, the marathon. Where to run? I think it's going to be Chicago or NYC.

Losing an additional 25 pounds would get me to my goal weight - may as well make it 26.2 also.

How am I going to accomplish this? 1) Eat better. Pay attention to what I'm eating. Write it down. 2) Exercise. Continue to weight train, spin, run. Stick to a 3 days a week running schedule. Participate in various runnning events to continue to motivate me throughout the year.

I can do this. Here I go.

Jan 1 Training:

40 minutes run - 5 min warmup (4.0); run 3/walk 2 (6.0/4.0) for 30 min; 5 min cooldown (4.0)
30 minutes XT - stationary bicycle

GO ILLINI:cheer2:

Happy New Year!!

I think your goals sound great! I'm super impressed by all that you have accomplished already and I'm sure that you will succeed in acheiving these new goals that you have set for yourself! :cheer2:

I bet Disney is the best place to run. :lovestruc With all the Magic surrounding you! I considered trying to do the half marathon there in 2007, but never really worked up to being able to run very much. I have decided that for now running just isn't my thing. I think it is probably a really great stress reliever though.

Your training today is good too! I haven't yet gotten my workout in, but you are inspiring me! Thanks!

Hi

Just found your journal here and what a GREAT year you had. Congratulations on all your success!!! :goodvibes I would love to run NYC one of these years too. I don't think it's in the cards yet as I doubt I'd have much luck in the lottery getting picked to run. But I wish you the best. Do you run with a charity group? I too have some marathon goals this coming year...I hope to train for another marathon myself...I'm looking to run Arizona with my running partner next January. But first I have to survive the 39.3 miles coming up here in a week!!

Anyway...good luck with your 2008 goals. I'm sure you'll succeed as you seem to be a VERY determined person!!! :thumbsup2

WOW! You have had an awesome year!!! That is fantastic. Looking at your year, what an inspiration you are! I'd love to be able to have a year like that. I'm just getting ready for my first 5K next week at Disney and I hope to continue on to train for longer distances.

Keep up the great work! You can do it!
