Just had one of my favorite summer treats... a tomato sandwich!

I really am not a gardener, but I do grow tomatoes, just so I can indulge in sandwiches whenever I want!

I like mine with salt, pepper, mayo and a slice of american cheese. Down the shore I had one with Auricchio provolone (a provolone that is so sharp it bites you back) and that was HEAVENLY, but I'm too cheap to buy that cheese on a regular basis!!

Now about the bread... Wheat pitas are my first choice when making a tomato sandwich. It keeps the mess nicely enclosed. But today I had some fresh rolls and that was delicious, too!

Anybody else enjoy tomato sandwiches???

::yes::

We ate those A LOT growing up. With 9 kids, Mom had to learn how to stretch a dollar, and tomato sandwiches helped considerably.

I love them but I haven't had a good tomato in years so I really miss them. Even the ones at the farmer's market look like they just came out of the grocery store.

BUT, when I do eat them it is with mayo, salt, and soft WHITE bread. I probably would like that sharp provolone though!

Me too! Oh, I'm so happy that I'm not alone!

Wheat bread is my favorite, salt, pepper & mayo! YUM!:bounce:

no a huge tomato fan but I like them with mozz cheese

Sounds yummy. These days, I have been getting french bread, olive oil, salt and pepper, thin slices of tomato, pepperoni slices, and shredded asst. cheeses then toasting them in the toaster oven-yummy.

I also LOVE them.
Never tried it with cheese. Humm sounds like a good idea.

I love them. I like mine with a lot of pepper on wheat bread with mayo. I also add cucumber and cheese sometimes.

Isn't there a DIS guideline prohibiting the use of such vulgar words as the "T" word in thread titles??? It's liable to be offensive to someone. :faint: :crazy2: :crazy2:

:p :p :p :p

Mmmm - tomato(fresh from the garden) and cheese sandwiches are the best!! I'm still waiting for the 1st ripe tomato from my garden.

VERY funny you brought this up, as I just, last Thursday, had my very first, EVER tomato sandwich!! It was wonderful, and I had TWO! I used my whole wheat bread with zesty italian dressing, salt and pepper, a slice of mozzerella and light mayo. It was devine!!

Now, about that quote above... can I just say... what a wonderful idea! I have some whole wheat pitas in my fridge and a nice juicy tomato on my counter...that sounds like a great way to stop the juices running down my arm! Thanks for the great idea!

The true southern way to have a tomato sandwich is sliced tomato, (still warm from the sun shining on it in the garden), Duke mayonaise, salt, pepper on white bread-as in Wonder.

Pita sounds good to me, though.

You must be in heaven..I can't grow tomatoes to save my life. The ones at the open market are ok, but not the same as the ones in my dad's garden.

a good crusty bread, some fresh mozzarella, and some extra virgin olive oil

I only do this in the summertime with fresh garden tomatoes, but I like to make a grill cheese with tomato sandwich...just prepare as you would a regular grill cheese, except I put tomato with a little mayo, salt, pepper between 2 slices of the cheese before grilling...yum::yes::

MMMMMMMMMMMMM Yummy!! I love them too. But I just love fresh, homegrown tomatoes, I eat them like apples! Tis' the season for GREAT tomatoes!

mmmmmmmmmmmmm YUMMY! Love tomato sandwiches with plenty of pepper and some cheese and mayo.Havent had one yet as we too are also waiting for our tomatos to ripen.

I just had my first one this afternoon for lunch. I have 6 plants in. I am in South Jersey and grow the Big Boy's. Jersey tomatoes are the best! Today I made a grill cheese and then put the tomato's on it. Yummy. But nothing like a fresh Jersey tomato sandwich with mayo. salt and sometimes american cheese! :D

Agreed. I think it's the Jersey soil. Here in PA, they are GOOD, but there's just something about the Jerseys.

And I just got really lucky with my crop this year. I had my first tomato by the 4th of July. Highly unusual. And they are ripening at a nice pace that I can keep up with. In other words, we've eaten ALL of them, and haven't given ANY away!! LOL!

Beats last year when 2 neighborhood kids picked my plants clean just for the fun of it, just as they were about to ripen!

Fishbone† LOL!!! I've seen your tag before and I've concluded that there's something WRONG with you that you don't like tomatoes!!!!
