Yes there's a ferry outside of MK that goes to Fort Wilderness. Definitely the best way to get there. The ride itself is around 20 minutes I think. I would plan for around 40 minutes travel time in case you have to wait for the ferry.
I agree that you should allow at least 40 minutes to get to FW for HDDR. We had just missed a boat and had to wait more than 30 minutes for the next one. The lines get pretty long that time of day.

The boat stops at Wilderness Lodge before going to FW so don't wait last minute. If you are staying on property depending on what show you go to there may be buses at FW that will take you to your resort. Always the last show and sometimes the second show. This saves you having to go to MK to get the bus there.
We have reservations for the 4PM show on July 4th. We're not doing anything else this day but Hoop Dee Doo. With the July 4th crowds, is it still the easiest to come to Magic Kingdom to get to Fort Wilderness? We'll be on property at All Star Sports and we won't have a car.
Yes, take the boat from MK, and I would allow at least 30 mins planned from the time you reach the boat dock (never know how long you'll wait, and if you arrive early you can explore a little bit!)

It COULD be faster to take a bus to any park and then take the Fort Wilderness bus from that park. Its hard to say which would be faster all the time because the wait times for bus and boats can vary. If you are doing all bus only, I would strongly recommend not going through DTD. That can be a mess. Go through a park (nearest of first us to come). At Fort Wilderness, you will have to transfer to the internal bus to get back to where the show is. (bus in only you walk from boat dock).
I would still do the boat. We found the boats to come more frequently than the busses last week at the fort. If you take a bus to a park and then another bus to the fort you'll have to wait for yet another bus to take you from the front to the back of the fort. The boat drops off right by where you need to be.
Great information! I think we'll just plan to go to Magic Kingdom and take the ferry over. If the park is closed because of crowds, will we still be able to do this? I would hate to make the plan and then not be allowed to be dropped off at MK because the park is closed.
Super happy you posted this! My husband and I haven't been since we were children and we are planning a day where we go to MK until they kick us out for the Christmas party at 7 and heading over to the 8:30 Hoop Dee Doo show. Since a lot of people will be leaving the park at that time, should we allow more than 40 minutes?
