I realized that the day we are planning to be at MK is a Boo Bash day, although we're not planning to attend that event. Is that a bad idea? I have seen the park closes at 8:30 today...does that mean no Happily Ever After? If so, I guess I will swap my park schedule.

I'm planning the same and I think it's actually a good idea. I would think it would be slightly less crowds as a fair number of people will only go to the event in the evening and skip Magic Kingdom during the day.

When they had the full party that started at 7, so you had to leave the park at 6, the crowds for the day were less, and we intentionally went those days. With the new AH party starting at 9, I don't think it will have much impact on crowd levels for the day.

If you're deep in the crowd, there's no way they're going to get you out of it anyway.
At party time you will no longer be able to enter the ques for rides. You will have to also show the event band to walk in certain areas. Without the band they will direct you certain ways. We found that they are skilled at identifying and directing people out of the parks. Of course some might slip through ... but overall they are efficient.
