Anyone catch 48hrs last night with Katie Couric? Spike Lee was on talking about Michael Jackson and at one point said Michael's back with "us", or He's "ours" again, something to that effect and that "We"(the black community) were the only ones who stood by him during his "bad" times. Then they showed Jamie Foxx from the BET awards show shouting Michael was a Black man several times.

Both instances just seemed very racially charged to me and not appropriate. Any comments?

Spike Lee fails to appreciate the millions of fans, of all races that catapulted MJ to stardom, kept him there and are now mourning his death. I can understand his personal pride, but without the 'white' population, MJ would not have been part of the landscape of popular music.

I try very hard to respect Spike Lee as a writer/director, but then he has to go and open his mouth. Funny -- I don't remember ever meeting him or discussing MJ with him, so I'm not sure how he thinks he can speak for ME as a "white" person (which I'm not, exactly, but it's a long story).

And I don't remember the black community supporting MJ very well when they thought he was trying to look "white" -- maybe a little bit of guilt talking, Mr. Lee?

Okay..he's black.:rolleyes1 It was pointed out to me by another poster here on the boards that there was a time when a good many black people thought MJ forgot he was black. Look up comic Katt Williams on YouTube talking about MJ. I won't post the link..the language is totally inappropriate to a Disney forum. Now that he's dead...he's black again. I don't get it.
Please...the guy started out as a black boy and wound up a white woman.

No disrespect to his music..... which I think everyone can say they enjoyed at one point or another in their lives...but he sure had a lot of issues regarding his race, and his gender.

Someone, I forget who now as I have watched far to much MJ coverage the past few days, said that the Black community felt MJ was like OJ....Black men trying to be white but when they got into trouble that they both returned to their black roots until their need for it subsided.

MJ definitely had issues with his race or I don't think he would have had white children deliberately.

As for Spike....If I said what I thought of him, I think I would get into trouble here on the dis

MsA

Spike Lee is an idiot with a big mouth.

If he feels that, by death, MJ is back with "them", he can take his racist beliefs and go pound sand.

Does anyone really care what Spike Lee or Jaime Foxx has to say :confused3

Apparently Katie Couric does.

Which is one of my biggest pet peeves with the media. The statements of those two mental giants should have gotten zero airtime, yet the network choses to air them anyway. Why? This is one of the ways racial tension persists in this country.

I agree.

Don't forget -- Spike Lee manages to offend people all over the world -- it's not like his statements are only published in the local newspapers. And outside the US, his statements are often considered American, not "black" MJ was much more popular the last few years in other countries. Spike Lee fails to mention that point.

Ugh, he's just horrible.

If any of you are on Facebook & have received the "5 people I'd like to disappear from the face of the earth" application, he's one of my choices ;)

Along with Bernie Madoff and a few others :rotfl:

His death is not racial in any way...but there will undoubtedly be those who will wish to spin his LIFE in a racially motivated way. he's black...he's white (hey, wasn't there a song to that effect??).

Who cares what he was?? He was an entertainer who created music beloved the world over. He influenced countless others. He's gone now, and that is sad.

True, his death is not racial...I think it's people like Spike Lee who want to try and make it that way.

Michael Jackson had a huge following from all races.

He was extremely gifted and talented, but did, I believe, have some emotional/mental problems in his life. It's kind of sad, really.

That's an ignorant and inflammatory thing to say...but consider the source.
