Mixology ??

I'm so impressed that you guys remembered the names of your drinks!
I did a mixology class on the dream - can't remember what I dramk and when I checkedy photos I had a picture of 5 empty glasses !! Lol

We did the Mixology on the Wonder this past January. We had a manhattan, B-52, Bahama Mama and two other drinks I can't remember. :) It was one of the best parts of the cruise. We also did the wine tasting, the liquor and chocolate tasting, and the Margarita tasting. The wine tasting had the most people, but it was only 20 people. The classes were a ton of fun and I highly recommend them.

We're going on the Fantasy this July and are interested in the tastings on board. Has anyone done the Tequila one, and if so, do they serve a variety of brands of tequila? I'm hoping it's not just an assortment of Jose Quervo and would like to try others. Any tips and or advice would be greatly appreciated. 75 days to go! :earsgirl::earsboy::smickey:

Wow! this looks like a great opportunity after reading these posts! Can you register in advance or do you wait until you are onboard?

We've done the tequila tasting. Our bartender was very enthusiastic about the history and variety of tequila. We had shots of Patron Silver, Reposado and Anejo. Plus, we made margaritas. We had a great time.

Is it wrong for me to be so tempted to sign up for more than 1 mixology class? Mixology is always so much fun as compares to other tasting classes. I was thinking about taking a class on each sea day.

Not wrong at all! I was in a cruise meet group that scheduled two private Mixology classes and there were members that signed up for both.

sounds like a great plan to me! Now I am REALLY excited to see what it is all about!!

Our group on the may 30 sailing to Alaska is doing one with about 28 people and it is all booked.

Wife and I have done mixology, martini, wine, champagne, and whisk(e)y tastings. We actually owned a bar for about 3 years so it was just for fun rather than with the expectation that we would learn a whole lot of new stuff. We really enjoyed them all and would do them again. We'll probably try another one or two on our next cruise. A couple of general comments/opinions:

1. The selections are usually run-of-the-mill stuff, but a good sampling of varieties. If you are a connoisseur then odds are pretty good you've probably tried most of it before. If not, then you will get a good introduction I would say.

2. As a couple of people have mentioned, be aware of your tolerance level. They were pretty generous with the pours and that many drinks in a short period of time can be a lot if you aren't used to it. Also, not all tastings are created equal. The alcohol content can be substantially different depending on what you are drinking. We did two in the same day once and by the end of the second I was feeling it pretty good, and I generally have an above average tolerance. Nothing to be overly concerned about, but just keep it in mind and plan accordingly.

One sort of funny story about the martini tasting. My wife really wanted to go the martini tasting last minute because she likes VODKA martinis and thought they would probably be mostly that since that seems to be the trend at the moment. I'm not a huge fan of martinis in general and I REALLY don't care for Gin, but I agreed because wife. First thing out of the box they give us a big old classic Gin martini. Being the trooper that I am, I held my breathe and slammed that sucker back in a second to get it over with. The bartender took this as a sign of enthusiasm and promptly refilled me when I wasn't looking. I didn't want to be rude so I smiled and slammed that one two. From that point on she gave me an extra large pour of everything despite my politely trying to assure her that I was fine with the normal amount. I've never had so much Gin in my life.

TL;DR version:
They are great. Do it, but don't drive any farm vehicles immediately after.

Tequila tasting was fun-all Patron (3 shots) and some margaritas (Cadillac, Strawberry), but nothing exotic in terms of tequila. As for mixology- fun, 60 minutes- I seem to remember making a yellow bird-at least that is what I think it was. Our class was packed and one woman who sat at our table already tipsy to start :(

We did a Mixology on the Wonder at the end of April, and we had (pictured from left to right below):

Old Fashioned with Fireball Whiskey
Moscow Mule
Gin Garden (Cucumber-like Martini)
Serbian Lemonade (We made the name up, it consisted of Amaretto, Frangelico's, OJ mostly)
Alien Brain shot

We actually got to make the Alien Brain in the class. It lasted probably 45 minutes, and was a LOT of fun - we will DEFINITELY be doing another in the future!!! Not everyone liked all of the drinks, but that was OK - it was great to try so many different things! I'll be trying to recreate the Serbian Lemonade at home soon too :D

If Julian is doing your mixology class (any mixology class) on the Fantasy, you're *guaranteed* to have a good time. He's awesome.

We did the mixology class recently on the Wonder. It was the same day as Castaway Cay, but started around 4:00. Not a problem...we were cruising with another family, so we dropped off the kids at the club/lab and head to the Cadillac Lounge. When we got there, there were 4 sets of glasses set up at the bar...turns out we were the only ones signed up for the class!! Our class lasted about an hour, just a touch longer. I left about halfway through to run up to deck 9 to get pretzels....we needed some bread! HA! Because it was a small class, we were each able to mix one drink and pour for everyone. I'd definitely recommend doing it! I'm not sure I'd like a full class, but only 4 people who were all friends....it was perfect!!
