"mixed marriages".... a walmart rant.

Congrats. You were enough of a butthead to make them give you what it took to get you out of the store.

Like somebody else said, this is pretty standard. In fact, many B&M's will not even take back online purchases, you have to return them via the online policy.

You'll run into it again. Maybe they next store will kick you out without giving you your $7.94.
that's ridiculous.
If a product is defective i'd expect a full refund. And i've gotten full refunds along with them paying to do return shipping. I"ve also had companies tell me not to bother returning the defective item and they still refund me. As to returns from online in stores, i've definitely done this at sears and penneys.

The other element to this is the player might have not been defective depending on the brand.

I read a lot of DVD forums and it's a known fact than some discs have encoding issues that do not play nice with certain brands of players. The language options and subtitles are what goes wrong when this is an issue.

Yep, Lillian Vernon just did that for my wife. Great customer relations!

If you read my post you would see I said " the ONLY store I've encountered "

What about "and it's not true" comment preceeding that?

I was responding to that part. Not "snarky" at all.

There are a lot of places that will take things back and give you back the shipping and handling. JCPenney catalog for one. Buy something through them and if you need to bring it back, you get every cent back.

Walmart sucks at every level. I bought my son a watch at a WalMart while on a road trip. When the watch didn't keep time right just a few days later, when we got back home I returned it. Walmart would not give me the sales tax difference which although was only $2 or so, it was the principle.
Target has always given me the amount of sales tax that I actually paid. Same with Sears or any other national chain store.

Walmart just has the "too bad for the customer" attitude, so I take my wallet and myself to Target :cool1:

Which has the same policy on online returns do they not? I'm not a Wal-Mart fan by any means, but this policy isn't exclusively a Wal-Mart thing.

I know it is fashionable on this board to bash Walmart, but just wanted to point out that if the DVD player was defective, it was the manufacturer's fault, not Walmart's.

I would have wanted my shipping and handling charges back too, if it was an item I could not just exchange for a new one. I would have just exchanged it. :confused3
I had the pleasure of attending a chamber breakfast this morning. The speaker was Marci Rossell. http://www.leadingauthorities.com/search/biography.htm/s/17607

One of the things she would like to see change during 2006 is for the vilifying of Wal-Mart to end. That Wal-Mart has a more positive influence for the "collective good" than a negative influence. A lot of the negativity that Wal-Mart encounters comes from OUTSIDE pressures not their employees. Anyway, just thought it was interesting coming from a well-educated, knowledgable economist.

Target, Best Buy, Suncoast... there's more but if you're thinking the only one is VS you're wrong. Would you applaud everybody who threw a fit until they changed policy?

Cardaway,
I must respectfully disagree with you here. Most B&M stores WILL take back there online orders. As somebody who does most of their shopping online, I have had the unfortunate need to return things to both Target and Best Buy. They gladly take back their online items. Target will not refund a defective item - they will replace it. If you get a refund, you will eat the shipping. At BestBuy, they don't do merchandise exchanges. They will give you a credit for the entire thing, including shipping and handling so that you can either purchase a new item in the store or online.

I agree with the poster that said to be aware of the return policies before you purchase something.

And to the OP - good for you. Reading WalMart's return policy also states that you will receive a credit for your item, not a replacement. Note that it clearly says on the website return policy, that if you receive a defective item, the S&H WILL be refunded. The store was incorrect and Papa D was correct in insisting. (I would print out the policy and take it to the B&M store to show them the error of their ways!)

Target's return policy (www.target.com)
To return an item purchased on Target.com:
Most items on Target.com can be returned to a Target store or by mail. To determine if your item can be returned to a Target store, just look on the "Additional Information" tab in the product's description. You can choose which return method you’d like by visiting our Online Returns Center.

The following items cannot be returned to a Target store, and must be returned by mail within 90 days of their ship date:

• Items listed as “Web only” on their product description page.
• Items that have been replaced because they were defective, damaged or incorrect.

BestBuy.Com's return policy (www.bestbuy.com)
BestBuy.com Return Policy

If your item was purchased online, you can either bring it to a Best Buy store location or return it by mail to our return center.

Walmart.com's return policy

To Return an Item to a Store
Take the item, invoice and all original packaging and accessories to Customer Service at your local Wal-Mart.

For all payment methods except Bill Me Later®, an associate will issue an immediate credit to the original payment method or provide a store credit for the cost of the item and the sales tax, if applicable.
For an item paid for with Bill Me Later, an associate can issue store credit in the form of a Wal-Mart Shopping Card or a cash refund. Then you receive a bill from Bill Me Later and submit payment to Bill Me Later.

Returns Exceptions
Oversize items: Some heavy or large items that are identified as oversize on their item pages may be returned to a store or by Freight shipping. Under some circumstances, you may be charged for return shipping. To return an item by Freight, call Customer Service at 1-800-966-6546. They will also be able to inform you of any return shipping costs.

If you were sent an incorrect, damaged or defective product, we will issue a credit for any applicable shipping and gift-wrapping charges.

hooray for NA. Alot of stores do returns that way. The issue wasn't about returning in person. It was about s&h. There are times you should stand up for yourself and fight.

I never said all.

Exactly what was said.

At BestBuy, they don't do merchandise exchanges. They will give you a credit for the entire thing, including shipping and handling so that you can either purchase a new item in the store or online.

Not my experience on more than one occasion. I no longer buy anything online with Best Buy.

Ditto...thank you for your research Nana Annie!

It's nice to see people research things before posting what they think is fact.

My mother and I have fought each other on Walmart for years! (I stared boycotting as a teenager, after the scandal with employee overtime abuse). She always said she like Target better, but it was a further drive from her house.

Well...two weeks ago she went to get her prescription filled at Walmart--and they gave her the wrong medicine! They gave her a cancer drug that could have made her severely ill had she taken it along with her other regular prescriptions--luckily she noticed the mistake before taking any pills.

My father, who is a doctor, was furious--and when he went to talk to the pharmacy at Walmart, they refused to give out the name of the employee who made the mistake any refused to take any responsibility for it--saying that the patient should know which medicines are theirs or not. They would not budge from this position...until my father called both the drug company that manufactures the incorrect drug and the one that makes her actual medication...

Walmart sure changed their tune when the lawyers for the drug companies started calling...

We are now a Target family.

Ok, not a problem, I said. So I went right to the CS area and started sharing my experiences with the 10 or so customers in line! :rotfl2:

Five minutes later I had my $7.94 back!

:rotfl2: See, now that's the kind of stuff I wish I had the guts to do!! I just get mad and come home and fume about it!! Probably would be an explanation for my blood pressure issues, huh? ;)
