After realizing that we both wanted to go to water park, we made our way to Downtown Disney. This was the first time either one of us had been and we were, in a word, amazed. Yes, I know it is a shopping center. You could even argue that it is a tourist trap- a clean, imaginative, elegantly landscaped tourist trap but a trap nevertheless. However there is something
I dont know if it is the Mouse, the Pixie Dust or the Magic but when Disney gets a hold of a shopping center something special happens. We spent the afternoon in the typical budget conscious way- browsing. I loved the Christmas ornament and home decorations. I was sad that we had already finished outfitting our home in a very traditional Southern country meets Old World charm kind of way (big knotty pine furniture paired with trendy paint colors and classical accents) because in this venue having a Mickey Mouse kitchen seemed totally doable and completely appropriate. Who wouldnt want a wrought iron plant holder with hidden Mickeys in the front room? Or Pooh on the towels in the guest bath? Why O why had I chosen Magnolia blossoms? TwinkieDaddy loved the art store. Have I mentioned that he is a collector? DS loved the Lego store. We spent quite some time at the interactive Lego tables in the searing heat. DS was completely intent on his creation. I tried not to lust after the various high calorie dessert offerings that everyone else seemed to have. We took the required and in retrospect not very imaginative photos that everyone takes at DTD. Quick DS- go stick your head in the lions mouth!
After broiling ourselves in the name of the perfect Lego model we took a side trip to the famed interactive fountains. This is so worth it-especiallly with a small child in tow. I captured the whole thing on film- a minor miracle in my pre-digital camera days. DS, having kind of an engineer's bent to the world, approaches the fountain with caution. Sticks his hand into the spray. Laughs with delight. Repeats. Eventually gets curious about where does the water come from. Yes he sticks his face right over the opening in the top of the globe. "Click" Mama has picture. Just then the fountain squirts a huge stream of water straight into his little beady eyes. "Click" Mama has picture. He is doused again with the second burst before he can even react and then be laughs so hard he shakes. So did I and DH. So did everyone else in the vicinity. "Click" another picture. Yes, the scrapbook page is absosmurfly perfect!
We finished our trip with the grand finale- The World of Disney.
You could get lost in the World of Disney. I did. There is so much fabulous merchandise and junk that just begs to come home with you. There are stores within stores within stores in this place. It is almost a little overwhelming- but so happy to have the option of buying tiny Mickey plush toys wearing tuxedos or wizard hats or safari gear for $6.95 after looking at the original framed cells. I think this is a plot. You congratulate yourself on not buying the limited edition lithograph for $485 so you can drop a couple hundred bucks at World of Disney guilt free. Must have postcards. A couple of t-shirts is completely normal. Souvies for the friends back home.
What did the Twinkies buy? Me- well I had my eye on a couple of things but I am indecisive and we can stop by here on our way out of town so nothing. DS-tempted by some Legos, plush toys, and a coloring book but we still are not at the Magic Kingdom so he is hanging on to his Disney dollars.
TwinkieDaddy- He spent $30.35 at the World of Disney that day.
You know what he bought.
Say it with me-
PINS!
