Mittens!

Give me a roll of duct tape please! Urg, my autistic DS won't keep his mittens on his hands. I can barely keep the coat on and he runs out the door into the snow is a second.

Any good suggestions? We did I'm cold in his ABA program I we think he has it, but he loves to be outside in the snow.

Actually, the duct tape is a great idea. Just tape the mittens to the jacket.

You could also buy the mittens with the long sleeve, put the mittens on him first, then the jacket. The sleeve part of the mitten would be so far up the jacket sleeve that he would have a really hard time geting them off.

I got my autistic DS some from Land's End that have elastic at the wrist. they stay on his hands really well.

How about a social story about getting dressed for outside? I know I used one for boots with a student last year because he wanted to go out, but didn't like to put on his boots.

I agree with the mittens that have long sleeves, I've had students use these. Writing a social story is also a good idea.

The solution was out in my barn the entire time! I use a product called vet wrap on my horses. It goes on, comes off, is waterproof and leaves no residue.

I tried "wrapping" his mittens to his and it was a complete success. I wrapped very loose and it kept him dry the entire time. We went inside, I took it off and that was that. Easy, works and very cheap!

One caution with the vet wrap (not a caution for using it to keep mittens on, but more a caution for other things).

A few years ago, I thought it would be just the thing to pad some places where screws stuck out on my DD's wheelchair. It comes in really nice colors, is cushion-y and sticks only to itself. The same product with a different name (Coban) is used to secure dressings in humans. I had used it and thought this vet wrap would be great because the colors were nice and would hide soiling.

I wound it around the places I needed it. It looked great, but because it is tacky, it starts to attract dust and dirt. So, after a few weeks, I tried to get it off. It was stuck to itself like glue and finally had to use a knife and cut it off.

So, it's really good for temporary use, but be careful if you have it in place for more than a few days (should not be a problem for mittens though).

Icicles are NOT as useful as hands I guess

What would happen if you let him go out in the snow without the mittens and let his hands get really cold? Would he notice? Could he learn from the experience that if he doesn't keep his mittens on, his hands get super cold? I've done this with my girls, and it sometimes works. Good luck!

Our guys wouldn't notice at all when they were smaller...just getting them to wear socks, long pants and long sleeve shirts on chilly days would be a challenge .. Much prefer shorts, t-shirts and bare feet

They really are tropical weather kids!

Now, however, they do notice if their bodies are cold. Still not their feet or hands, but will ask to wear a long sleeve sweater because their arms are cold.

Go figure!! LOL!

I like the Coban or Vet Wrap idea.

I know that for a so called "normal" child that just letting them go out and play without mittens, jacket, shoes or whatever the rejected clothing article usually results in a reluctant child coming in to warm up and ask for the article of clothing. No lecture needed.

Unfortunately, some children and adults don't perceive cold as a serious problem. I applaud your creative idea.

My DS would stay outside until the finger froze off his hands. He just doesn't get the cold. I live in Wyoming and this morning it is sub zero. He has to wear the mittens, hat, coat, all the gear just to go check the mail! Vet wrap works great for the big days on the mountains when I need to keep the wet snow out and the mittens on.

It is only .99 cents a roll, comes off easy, sticks to itself, is water proof and it works for us.

I will preface this with: I don't have children....

I don't know how old your DS is, but could he wear gloves? Maybe he isn't too thrilled about mittens because it is harder to manipulate things with them on -- tough to really grab snow and dig wihthout full use of fingers.....

Just a thought.
