Mistreated by teacher

My daughter's math teacher is totally mistreating my dd. My daughter goes to an incredible private school and her math teacher knows that my daughter needs her confidence boosted. All the teacher has been doing is shutting her down. Yesterday she asked the class a question on a problem and my daughter's answer was different from everyone else. When the teacher asked her why - in a very can't be bothered way and mean way, my dd said to never mind and changed her oponion. My daughter says that she told her to not call out again unless she wants to answer the question! And it was told to her by staring away from her in a very mean, hatred looking face!

I have called the school to set up a meeting and will be seeing the Principal on Monday. We have had issues with this teacher all year long. After the very first attempt in the beginning of the year, she has gotten much worse towards my daughter! Now I have heard that she might be getting fired, not because of us, we haven't complained, only today was our first with the principal. Obviously, this teacher has serious issues of her own and is putting it out on my daughter and now I hear others as well!

Just wanted to vent and get this off my chest. I can't believe that there are educators out there that mistreat children like this and make them feel worthless.

All I can say is, hugs!!! :grouphug:

And, yes, unfortunately, I can definately believe it.
I have seen too many situations like this.
My DS teacher this year has some real issues.
It has been awful.

I hope everything works out for your DD, one way or another.

I myself am sitting here counting down the last weeks of school for my DS.
We will be taking a week off in May. And our schools let out a couple weeks after that. So, I am just disregarding those weeks. So, we have until the end of April. considering one of those weeks is Spring Break, that is only a few weeks left!!!

And I will hopefully never have to deal with DS current teacher ever again. :cool1:

Also, she is african-american and favors the african-american children in the class and all of her daughters friends, because her daughter is also in the same school and same age as my daughter (11). My dd just hates her and says she will never ask another question in her class and not participate.
Did you actually witness this, or is this your DD's account?

MTE, Robin. I think kids (and people in general) sometimes perceive criticisms in a more negative way than they were intended. I know my kids tell me their teachers "yell" at them all the time. When I press them, they say it wasn't really yelling, but that the teacher reprimanded the entire class without raising her voice.

I would talk to my daughter again, and make sure she still has the same impressions she did when she spoke to you the first time. I think you probably do need to speak to the teacher, and I bet she has an entirely different take on the situation than your daughter does. But try hard to be unconfrontational. If you put her on the defensive at square one, the meeting has no chance of success, and you will probably leave feeling worse than when you went in. Couch the discussion in terms of what your daughter is feeling, rather than what the teacher is doing.

Finally if I were you, I would let the teacher have an opportunity to speak with you before you involve the principal. I would be horrified if someone had a problem with me, refused to give me an opportunity to talk to me about is, and immediately went to my boss.

Good luck!

Let me say that living in Mississippi I can definitely relate. Reverse racism is horrible here. Let me say that no every teacher isn't like this. My son had a AA teacher in kindergarten and I would have had her teach him until he graduated she was so wonderful!

We are constantly seeing and hearing about the same situation though. Good luck with the meeting.

Some people just shouldn't teach regardless of sex, race, etc.

Have you considered sitting in on her class?

Obviously I did not witness this, she was in class. And yes, this true, I have been talking to another faculty member and she says that this has been going on for quite sometime.

What about a small tape recorder and have your DD record the way she is being talked to. Of course if the meeting doesn't do any good.

::yes:: i was going to ask the same question. Children always put their own spin on things!

I had many teachers that 'hated' me too when i was growing up! My mother made sure to tell me, not everyone i encounted in life is going to fall in love with me

I totally agree with you. We have always told our children that not everyone is going to like them and they can't make someone too.

This has nothing to do with how my daughter is just being treated, this is something the teacher is doing to many children, that is why the school is acting on this decision to release her.

And, if you are paying over $20,000 for 6th grade, I'm sure you would take a different spin on this.;)

That is totally unfair. Because I send my kids to public school I hold the teachers to a lesser standard than you do? That I expect that they will be mean to my children and disrespect them? That is one of the most ridiculous things I have read on the DIS in a long time, even with the smile.

I don't think Ive ever taken a math class where you didn't have to be prepared to defend an answer or go up to the board and work out a problem in front of the class.

It wasn't called "mistreatment," it was called "teaching."

ah so if you're not rich enough to, or opt not to, spend $20k a year for middle school, you have lower standards for teachers and expect your child to be mistreated?

I might have had an "el cheapo" private school education, but it's always been my experience in any class that if you are not going to answer the question, or pose another relevant question, you don't speak up. Especially in math class where you had to justify your answer on the board in front of the class

EXACTLY! and i did go to a fancy private school and i STILL take the same spin on it.

You obviously don't understand, I am a product of a public school. I am not putting down public schools, what you just wrote is rediculous, but I did expect a comment like yours because if we all agreed in this world, there would be no wars and there would be peace on earth.

I apologize if this is incorrect, but the writing style seems to be that of a teenager or younger. Is your daughters name Mylie?

I went to public school, where they taught me to spell ridiculous.
