Posting this in hopes it will help out another new owner....

We put down a deposit (for 150 points) a few weeks ago and got a temporary membership cards and called right away to make reservations for upcoming November and Feb trips. There was nothing available for November, so we waitlisted and I proceeded to book Feb Pres week using 98 points. I knew if November opened up we might have to shorten the February stay, but figured since it was Pres week, I'd grab the dates while they were available.

Well yesterday, I get a call from member services and various things have opened in November, so as we're going through which days at which resorts for the November trip, at one point, the CM says you'll have to borrow and I said no, I'm going to adjust something else, and on we go discussing different availability for November and at one point, she says hold on a sec and comes back a short while later and says ok, here's your two reservations for November and I borrowed 30 some odd points from 2005. And I said, I didn't want to borrow points, I want to take a couple days off my Feb reservation and use those points. And she says, well you can take them off Feb and bank them. And I said, I don't want to bank them, I want to use them for this year and I want 2005 left in tact. I go on to say, "very apologetically" that I'm really sorry, this is virtually my first reservation and I didn't realize that I should have canceled the days in Feb first and then booked the November stay, but that I really do not want to use 2005 points, that it was never my intention and was I going to be penalized for being a novice?.
She said she would write up something to "unborrow" the points, but that it would take 48 hours to process and have the points show back up in my account. I told her I'd call back in a couple days and make sure everything went according to plan.

Anyway, just thought I'd share in case someone else finds themselves in a similiar situation and also to find out if there's any other tips I should know about when making reservations?

The first time I ever made a reservation, I was impressed how the person at MS talked me through the whole process, including double and triple checking with me before "hitting enter" so that points would be borrowed. I'm sorry you didn't have a similar experience.

I was discussing un-borrowing and un-banking on a different thread. It's one of the things I don't like about DVC's point system. Every time I talk to MS I ALWAYS ask them to, once again, review all my points and applicable deadlines. It's very easy to get confused, and very easy to let points die a tragic, lonely death.

I think it may be more of a case with new MS CM's than you being a new member. Last time I called for a reservation the CM wasn't really clear on what she was doing and forgot to give me a confirmation number. Thank goodness the reservation was still there when I called later to double check (realizing I didn't have a confirmation number!).

Well, I called today and it looks like we're all set for now. All my reservations were there, all the waitlists were as requested and I had no borrowed points and 12 points left to use before now and June. I can either use them to add on a day or so in Feb, or bank them. - plenty of time left for that.

Glad it turned out ok.... (((((((hugs))))))))

I always confirm the number of points I have (and in my case which contract we are using) before and after each call. Human error is natural. Both theirs and mine.

BTW Welcome home!
