We picked up my DH's birth certificate at the courthouse in the county where he was born during a trip to visit the inlaws. It is an official copy with a raised seal and all the information is correct EXCEPT that they misspelled his first name. His mother showed us a copy of the hospital record (with footprints) and an unofficial copy of his handwritten birth certificate and his name is spelled correctly on all these. At some point, when his handwritten birth cert was made into the typed version, the spelling was changed.

So, his official birth cert does not exactly match his drivers license or his social security card.

1. Do we need to do anything to correct this. If yes, how?

2. We picked up the birth cert in order to apply for passports. Will this cause a problem at application?

I hope someone can advise. Thank you.

I can't answer your questions, but I would like to know anything anyone else knows also. I had my name misspelled on my BC and found out when I had to get my drivers license. I had to go to the court and have them reissue a corrected BC (it cost $30 or so). When I went to apply for my passport recently, I had to give them my original BC and the correction BC and they sent both in. I hope my passport comes back with the correct spelling...we'll see, I guess.

We sailed on the Magic last September-

The official spelling on my husbands birth certificate-
Says VIGIL instead of his middle name which is VIRGIL

no one even noticed.........

Call or write or email the state dept of vital records of the state that issued it & ask what is their policy & procedure for correcting it. Someone made a mistake somewhere & I'm sure there's a channel for correcting it.

This has nothing to do with a cruise, but when my father passed away the funeral home gave the cororner his wrong birthday & the wrong information went on his death certificate! (try collecting life insurance with that - a little more complicated than a cruise!) My mom didn't find out until she ordered 20 copies of it (at $5 each) and they were all wrong. The funeral home & the cororner fixed it. This was in Louisiana & my mom had to pay all over again to get corrected copies.

I would get it fixed . . . it may be more important than a cruise some day in the future.
