I don't have much info on this but it seems like they were trying to take kids they thought were orphans out of the country. I guess they are going to try to get them on child trafficing sp? I find this so sad

it is sad. just one question. you said "thought they were orphans" so, does that mean they weren't orphans?

I'll be honest. The whole thing sounds very sketchy to me...not necessarily the missionary group, but the pastor they "work" for who lives in Atlanta. Was watching it this morning on The Today Show and something just smells off.

I heard on the news that some of the children had parents/families... BUT I don't think that is unheard of in a country as poor as Haiti... families can't afford to feed themselves or get medical care and give their children up for a "better life"

That being said, you just can't willy nilly TAKE kids out of a country... what were they thinking?

I think they were trying to get them health care, and food to eat and a roof over there heads

I'm glad to hear that the authorities are on the alert for this kind of thing. It's too easy for it to happen with everything else that is going on. If you are doing something innocent and good, then you will have the proper documentation, and you will work with the authorities, not just fill a bus and drive it across the border.

Regardless, you can't just pick children up willy-nilly and run away with them to another country (which is what they were trying to do).

I agree with Jennasis...something is off with their "story".

Which is too bad, b/c now everyone's motives will be questioned.

So volunteer in a make shift hospital, pass out supplies.... you just can't TAKE children. If they wanted to help, they should have done so LEGALLY.

I read a news article today that said that some Haitian parents have been trying to give their children to relief workers so that the children can survive and have a better life. So very sad...:sad1: If I can find the article again, I'll post it.

Maybe. Most likely. You can't, however, just "take" a child that you feel needs your help! My goodness.

This is all over CNN in depth. These "missionaries" didn't have the proper paper work. In facth, they went to the office and decided NOT to wait to get the proper paperwork OR to follow proper procedures. They took it upon themselves to follow whatever "mission" they decided they were on. The supposedly put in paperwork for a permit to allow some hotel, where they were going to be bringing the kids to, to be turned into an orphanage facility. But, that paperwork hasn't been approved yet, and the hotel is a loooooong way from being able to house the kids, like 6 MONTHS of work away. That is IF they were even going to turn the hotel into an orphanage and not simply use it for child prostitution. They would have been in no better living conditions.

Some of these children even still have an existing, LIVING relative in the country.

If Haiti allows them to get away with this, then essentially they would be opening the door to let (other) real human traffickers in.

Do not be so naive and emotionally fooled. Just because people say they are doing work on behalf of "God," doesn't make them right. These people thought they were above laws and procedures because they were on a mission for God. :sad2:

I don't. Protocol must be followed. I applaud the authorities for catching the creeps.

I have read they are being very careful because criminals steal kids to use as sex slaves. This is a free for all for them.

Something is not right with this story. :sad2:

Yes, that has been a major concern. For all we know at this point, we don't know if this "Missionary" story was simply an elaborate cover to get these children out of the country with no trace and sell them into sex slavery. It seems the OP bought their story so far.

Sorry, If I found a child that was starving or bleeding to death, I'm going to do whatever I have to to get this child help. So If had to be in jail for trying to save a child life so be it

Um- are you serious? We aren't talking about giving a kid a ride to the emergency room or buying them dinner......... they were TRYING TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY WITH KIDS THEY HAD NO BUSINESS TAKING.

There are so many legitimate ways people can help, this would not be one of them. Even with the best of intentions, you just can't go into another country and pick up some kids....governments frown on that. I can't even fathom how they would think this would work.

Not what we're talking about here. They were going to leave the country with these kids. Not taking them to a hospital or flagging down the military to get some help, out of the country. They call it kidnapping.

Imagine if this had happened during Katrina....a non-government group coming in and picking up the kids at the Superdome.

This group knew they were doing wrong. Making it God's work just makes it worse.

They are where they should be...in jail.

This is not the same thing as what these people are being charged with. If the child was sick or dying, go to the military or the embassy or whatever.

These people could be taking chilidren from a horrible situation and putting them in hell. Sell a 3 year old child to the highest bidder...auction off a baby to be raised as a slave...

Not quite the same as saving a child that is living in horrible conditions...
