They just announced the teasers for our 11 PM news here in Florida that Disney is closing Mission Space. Anyone else hear this? Guess I'll have to watch the news.

Was it Mission Space to Close??? with the question marks? That means it isn't. they just want you to watch.

Anyhow no, it's not going to cluse. They're having an option to where you can go on a centrifuge that doesn't rotate, or one that operates like it does now. It's in another thread.

No, the question marks were mine. It said a favorite ride at Disney was closing. I'll watch at 11 and see what the full story was.

I am watching the 11 oclock news and the only thing they mentioned here in MA was the milder option of MS. Haven't heard about it or any other ride closing. :confused3

I'm in MA too and they said on the news they will be opening a milder ride right next door to the existing one. Annmarie

There are 3 or 4 "rooms" already in M:S.
Each room contains 4 "capsules" connected to a central centrifuge.
Each capsule holds 4 people.
The spinning centrifuge creates the "artificial gravity" effects of the ride.
Its the artificial gravity that creates the "feel" of realism for the ride as the video and audio reinforce the effects.

Soon, Disney is going to operate 1-2 of the "rooms" WITHOUT spinning the centrifuge in that room.
So its not that they are opening a new "milder ride right next door", its just that the rooms that are ALREADY "next door" will simply offer the video and audio effects without powering the centrifuge in that room.

The other 1-2 rooms will operate WITH the spinning centrifuge (just as they always have) for the fans of the ride they've come to know.

You will then have a CHOICE of riding M:S with or without the spinning.

That will be so cool for me, as I am NOT into spinning at all.... :goodvibes

But as far as people opting for the MILDER/TAMER ride due to health issues, I think what I recall reading about the two incidents at MS (one last year, little boy) and then the one this year, the woman...is that BOTH of them had pre-exisitng health issues that they were NOT aware of....hence even with a tamer MS, both MAY have still gone on the more intense ride....

THOUGHTS ON THAT.... :confused3

I bet they were talking about POTC closing for 2 months to be revamped before the next movie opens in July.

The morning news this morning had a ticker on the bottom that said M:S would be getting "tamed" down. Sounds like the centrifuge is getting turned off or at least slowed down.

its 6:42 am and our news just said that they are making a tammer vertion along side the already running ride.

I honerstly wouldnt mind seeing that attraction go and another one put in its place, but since disney invested all that money into it and it recently opened that is just not going to happen!

I'm so glad they are taking out the centrifuge element in a couple of the rooms. My DH rode MS and said it was spectacular. I just can't bring myself to do it because I get motion sickness so badly. I'm very excited about this and can't wait for it to happen!

I would think that they would have to continue to alternate which were not spinning to keep all 4 in working condition......

The local news reports are making it sound like they would have to build a complete, separate attraction.

I'm not surprised and glad if they're going to keep one side as is. Mission:Space has never gotten to be as popular as Test Track and maybe taming it down will allow more people who are concerned to ride that side. But if it was to tame the entire ride - that would be a shame.

I couldn't imagine it gone from Epcot - it's now as much a part of the landscape as Spaceship Earth.

Maybe it's just because I grew up with the Space program why I love it so much. (yeah - I'm a boomer)

Our local news this morning had a ticker saying they are taming it down. It will be interesting to give it a try in comparison to the original version. I know the intent was good in trying to give people a feel for what it is like to go into space, but us common folk arent quite ready for that I guess :sad2:

They wil wait to see if the ride is worth keeping ( with the milder option ) before a decision is made to keep or close the ride. Should take a minimum of 6 months to get the answer.

I'm glad to hear this, too! Because of some medical conditions, I can never ride Mission:Space in it's original format. Being able to ride it now without all the g-forces will be great, I'll finally be able to experience the ride, without the worry. :thumbsup2

I'm glad they're also going to keep part of the ride in it's original format for those of you who like, and can handle, the g-forces :goodvibes I think this new change will, or should, make just about everyone happy :)

This is good news for worried parents and for people that might not be able to ride otherwise.

I think that news is good, because there's no harm in offering an option. The lines for this ride are never very long anyway. I think that's a great idea. GOOD GOING DISNEY :)

:thumbsup2 Kudos to Disney for offering a choice and not instantly closing Mission Space. My father would love this ride, but with an aortic valve replacement he was unable to ride the original version. I am glad there will be a choice (at least for a while.) He can take the kids on the decaf version while I ride the high-test spinner. :)
