Mission Space Question

I'm on BP medication. DH says that means I don't have high blood pressure, I'm not so sure. :confused3

Anyway, just last week, we decided to try it. DH took something for motion sickness, we each enjoyed a glass of wine with dinner at Italy, and then walked over to MS and lo and behold, there was no wait.

OK. You hear and read all sorts of warnings, but I'm determined, and DH said he would go with me, so we went. I was listening so intently to do my "job" I just pressed the button as soon as they said "navigator." I stared straight at the screen and concentrated hard on what they were saying. I was going to enjoy this ride, by golly!! We both felt a little disoriented, very very slightly, for less than 5 minutes afterward. Now that I know what to expect, I will do it again and try to enjoy it more. This first ride was just to prove to myself that I'm not too old for new rides.

Soarin was a piece of cake, for both of us. No meds for DH that night.

Bobbi :flower:

How long does the "spinning" last?!? :rotfl:
What about the rest of the ride? :confused3
Leaving in 7 days!!

Well, I didn't ride it, but I can tell you that my dh did and he threw up two hours later and felt crappy for the rest of the day. He said never again...he loves all thrill/rollar coaster rides, but not spinning ones (can't handle the Tea Cups either).

My 7 year old daughter and I rode it last month. Wife and 10 year old son skipped it. Both are prone to motion sickness and my son is not an adrenaline junky like my daughter.

It is very intense and hard to explain. You don't see the spinning, it is done to create centrifugal force and makes you feel like you are being pushed back into your seat, then later like you are weightless. It's hard to explain, but the reason you may feel disoriented is that the motion does not match what you see on the screen. They tell you to keep your eyes open and look directly ahead because what you see on the screen tricks your mind into thinking you are lifting off rather than spinning. If you close your eyes, you will probably feel the spinning.

My daughter and I both loved this ride though. We both took some dramamine before riding because even though we aren't normally prone to motion sickness, I had read all the warnings. We were both fine afterwards although I did feel a bit disoriented after getting off.

mother is 82 - she rode this ride in March.

she loved the take off -hated that WDW expected you to do something - don't worry the computer will take over for you.

I was just the opposite.

I get a little dizzy during the blast off - but enjoy feeling like you are part of the ride.

the dizzyness went away when I was concentrating on doing my job! I think that is a big reason for the assignments.

try it!!! you don't how your feel until you do it.

Play along it is definitely more fun when you do.

DH and I hated it DD(5) hated it Son(9) LOVED it!!!! Loved it so much that DH and I both had to take one for the team and ride again with him. So DS rode 3 times in a row and if he could have talked us into going again he would have. Now this year(he is 11) he can't wait for Mission Space. DH and I are fighting over who has to go with him. I may have to pull my high bloodpressure card on this one. I too felt like I was going to pass out right before the spinning stops(so I guess they know how long you can take it!) It feels like lightheadedness more than spinning. Then the ride is spectacular. I felt way claustrophobic in the beginning but then thankfully Gary Sinese talked me through. I think they are pumping in oxygen so you don't pass out. When they close the hatch I was thinking how the H am I going to get out of here. I was seconds away from what I guess would be a panic attack...But that being said anything for love and if I have to I'll ride it again.

How do kids tend to handle this ride? I have a 12 year old who is beside himself...he can't wait. Also have a 9 year old. Both are okay with spinny rides. Is it otherwise frightening? Don't worry about spoiling it for me. I'd rather know in advance. PM if you have to.

My then 6 year old and I rode it twice during our last visit. He LOVED it and couldn't wait to get back on after our first ride! I really liked it as well but could definitely feel it for a little while afterwards. It didn't keep me from getting back on for a second ride! We got so many comments from people in line who thought he was so brave to be going on it at such a young age.

Oh boy, I'm still not convinced...I don't know about this ride...

I really want to see it and experience what all the hype is about, but it seems everyone feels a little queezy or dizzy after. I don't think I want to feel like that if I can avoid it.

Try riding Mission Space as your last ride of the day. If it bothers you, go back to your hotel and lie down. I can't do spinning rides any more and usually feeling funny for about 5-10 min after doing MS. We do it once per trip. There is no other ride like it anywhere and its definitely worth it!

Good luck!

My perspective is a little bit different. I wanted to be able to experience the closest thing to actually lifting off in a spacecraft possible. That concept alone made the experience worth it.

You must have a postive frame of mind and a pretty strong constitution. It will shake up your senses.

Was it worth it????

You betcha.

it's tough for sure, but as i explained to my nine year old, it's only about 3 1/2 minutes to endure to see if it's something that you may really enjoy. we did it- and my 5 year old joined in for mission 2 and none of us got sick. for me, i hate roller coasters-won't do them, but this was something i had to do- i always wanted to be an astronaut and as the previous message said- you need the right frame of mind. i was so pumped (and very nervous) that when i first got in i actually said to myself- 'you did it, you're about to blast off' :Pinkbounc corny i know, but i really felt like that!
it's a question of balance- how much does your fear outweigh your interest??

good luck!

I'm one of the rare ones who was completely disappointed!! I couldn't for the life of me see what all the fuss was about! Having said that, my BIL, who rode with me, thought he was dying (ok, a bit drastic, but he was Kermit green). My Sis is now thinking about riding it when we go back and I'm trying to talk her out of it because I don't think she can handle it. I would like her to go through it, at least to the chicken exit, but she's a newbie when it comes to rides and she's clausterphobic and I think it will be too much for her...but who knows, she could prove me wrong! I am gonna ride it again just to make sure I didn't enjoy it because I so distracted by worrying about my BIL, but I'm not expecting any change in my review.

I do agree that if you really want to do it, do it, because you're only gonna regret not doing it and the regret may be worse that the outcome of actually riding it! If you're not sure then I wouldn't do it. The doubt you have may actually make it worse than it is (although for me it was the opposite which is probably why I was disappointed - expectations were too high).

Let us know how it goes if you do it and good luck!!

Last summer my whole family rode it. This includes dh (who hates to spin and will NOT ride the teacups), me ( I will ride most anything but was uneasy about MS especially after the 89th time hearing all the warnings), my dd (who was 10 and rides everything), and ds (who was 7 and loved it)!! So I say , Go for it! None of us felt sick after riding.

Keebles sister here! I'll admit, I am concerned about the claustrophobia. However, I am most concerned with the fact that I have vertigo. I have a tendency to keep spinning for about a week. That said, I REALLY want to try this. Anyone with vertigo done this?

I agree, everyone should try it at least once. I usually have trouble with spinning rides(could never do teacups). You can't tell the ride spins at all, and I didn't have any problems until it started all the "bobbing and weaving". And if that part had lasted any longer, I would have been in trouble! :earseek: I felt queesy for several hours after the ride and was unable to eat lunch... I tried, but with every bite, I just felt worse. That being said, I'm glad I did it, but I may never do it again... you never know. My wife, who only has trouble with drop rides, was totally unaffected.
So go ahead, have fun!

I have been on this ride and loved every second of it. Now, understand I am a thrill ride junkie. I love them. About the only thing I won't do is a bungie jump. I will ride any rollercoaster out there and any motion simulator. To me, they are all just a lot of fun. With that said, I am sorry that others have had bad experiences. I wish they could have enjoyed the ride like I did.

Ok, how weird is this, I'm replying to my sister's first post (congratulations by the way  )! I know the car moves, but I honestly didn't feel it much unless I was looking at the screen (which, BTW, was entirely too small for an adequate sense of realism). It seemed as though there was two focal points of movement that I felt...the take off (which was similar to RNR only up instead of straight ahead) and the rough landing ("don't move a muscle" says Lt. Dan). I did NOT feel the weightlessness at all (felt more of it on TOT). Not once did I feel like I was spinning or upside down (even if I was). The whole spaceship "experience" lasted about a minute and a half anyway. I did keep leaning forward (just like you're NOT supposed to do) to check on poor Matty-Kermit (it wasn't easy bein green). I also found the air blowing in my face a bit distracting as well (but I understand it's necessity). To tell you the truth, the whole thing is probably very similar to a vertigo episode (or a car ride with Mother). I think Matt was so focused on the confined space, he also wasn't too affected by the movement. You, on the other hand, will probably be focused on nothing but the movement, which might just make it worse (remember RNR and your poor neck?). But hey, you were queen of the teacups, remember? If you insist though, here's my plan...we'll ride it at the end of the night, don't forget your motion sickness pill, and please, pretty please with sugar on it, sit on the opposite end of the car from me! HA! :rotfl: LYMI!

Go for it!

Went on in last year after reading all the various stories on these boards.....and couldn't figure out what all the "will I get sick hoopla" was about. It wasn't intense at all. Quite the opposite, very exhilarating.

NOT TO BE MISSED!

Enjoy :cool1:

Wow,

Thanks for all the input. I really appreciate it.

I had a hard time with the launch on Rock and Roll Roller Coaster, it made me feel like I was going to die. Is the launch on Mission Space worse then that.

Thanks again.

The launch is probably the most intense part. After that, IMO, it was clear sailing. I think the build up is what gets most people. Warning signs everwhere in the line que prior to getting into your capsule. I guess you just need to try it yourself to find out. Many different opinions as you can see with this post. For me, I felt a little disorientated for about 10-15 minutes after the ride. Just had to get my land legs back, but I never felt sick. There is a long indoor walkway to the gift shop that has plenty of benches for you to sit if you need to after the ride. This is definitely a ride that you need to experience.
