Mission Space Heads Up.

It's definitely one of the first signs of my old age, and it's such a bummer. I can't handle any spinning rides anymore. :(

I feel so old!

It is a pain getting older, but the alternative is really lousy!!! :teeth:

I've been told that the inner ear gets stiffer with age, which is why "older" people have more problems with spinning. Makes sense I suppose.

I know that my son is going to want to ride the teacups when we go next month and I don't have anyone to pawn him off on to ride, so I suppose I wil get to bite the bullet and bring him. Should be fun...

:( :( I will never go on that ride again. We went on MS in August for the first time. My DD15 and I took dramamine back at the hotel. When we got to Epcot we went on MS, I got sick and DD just felt funny, DH was fine. I did do everything that the CMs said to do, but it didn't help. NEVER AGAIN for me. I even went to the first aid station to rest.

Put me on the "tea-cups" and I puke.... but I can handle MS just fine. But it's a fact that some people do get sick on MS, and it probably has the biggest "barf" factor at WDW. However it appears that a vast majority of people do just fine (including a lot of people that can't handle "spin" rides like me*). Following the directions is key, but it isn't a guarantee that all will be well with you.

* Your mileage may vary.

Wow, TriMom... I could've written that exact sentence -- except that I'm too short rather than too tall. I also have just about the same experience as you -- love coasters, fine with most simulators but some more intense ones get me, can't stand teacups. I followed the directions and was fine on M:S, although a bit disoriented for about 10 minutes after. I've ridden many times since and haven't had any issues. Now, I did find out I can't ride twice in a row

My biggest fear is someone ELSE in the capsule hurling. THAT would make me ill.

We rode MS several times during our last visit (once two times in a row without waiting!) and suffered no ill effects. I personally did feel a little dizzy after my first ride, but I generally do feel a bit strange after trying any new thrill ride for the first time. I felt fine the rest of the times we rode (probably 5 times in all!). My kids (ages 8 & 11) loved it! I should note that DW and I had taken Bomine and the kids had taken Dramamine (chewables for kids). MS is our second favorite thrill ride at WDW (the first being the Rock 'N Roller Coaster at MGM)!!

I was there a few weeks ago with 3 teenagers. I waited in line then chickened out due to the warnings. My main fear was the confined space. Oh well, the kids rode it and did fine. Even went back and did it again since the line was so short. I waited where the riders exit into the rest of the pavilion and not once did I see anyone that looked sick or said anything about feeling sick. Wish I had gone ahead and tried it, but the signs put the fear in me.

It's funny, but I'm finding that people can differ drastically on which types of rides make them sick and which don't.

Mission Space didn't bother me at all, but spinning and motion simulators just don't make me sick. Now put me on something that goes up and down a lot or has a lot of drops and I'll throw up all over the place. (eg. Tower of Terror)

I do know some people that can't ride spinning rides but can go up and down and up and down and ride the jerkiest wildest roller coasters ever and be just fine.

.....and then there are some people that can ride anything in the world and never ever ever get sick. (This amazes me.)

So I guess it's just like anything else to do with our bodies. Each person reacts differently to different things.

Thanks for the info. I really wanted to try this, but looks like I'll have to think about it a little more.

That's me. I love coasters!!! But can't do Teacups or the Astro Orbiter!!

However, I've found as I get older, I can't do several coasters back to back any longer :-(

I had 1/2 a day one afternoon/evening when on travel to hit the coasters at Six Flags over Texas last summer, (this particular park had 9 coasters). After three of them, I had such a headache that I had to take something and sit for a couple hours. Fortunately Six Flags tickets are so cheap, I didn't feel like I had wasted my money. I did manage to get in 5 of the 9 coasters that afternoon.

I was going to ride MS, but chickened out while standing in line. I found out that the ride was 4 minutes long and that you are constantly spinning the whole time. However my DH and two 7-year old daughters rode it. My daughters enjoyed the ride. My DH didn't enjoy the ride. He said he wished the ride had a panic stop button. DH said he was glad he rode MS to experience the ride, but he won't be riding it again.

I get motion sickness on a lot of rides, but never experienced any on Mission Space. In fact I did a 3-peat one night when it was empty and never felt any illness. One ride on Star or Body tours is usually enough to make me queazy.

:Pinkbounc  :bounce:

I forgot to mention that my DH felt a little woozy after getting off MS. We just happened to go to Ice Station Cool right afterwards and he drank the Ginger Ale there and he felt a lot better.

I'm one of those that got sick on MS. I followed the "directions" exactly and still got ill. This was especially galling because I was with my SIL who is the biggest chicken of the world. She doesn't go on Splash Mountain for pete's sake, yet we went on MS in July 2003 before it was officially opened, and I was the one that got sick and she was fine. Go figure!! The ride was fantastic, and I am glad I did it, but I won't be going on it again.

I played it by "ear"....

I went in line with DH to MS, undecided if I was actually going to go on it, as I have a pretty weak stomach when it comes to motion sickness.....

I have to say, I got more nervous about riding it as I was watching the group in front of me wolf down their lunch in line. I was more worried about them not being able to keep their lunch down than me losing it!

So, DH and I figured he'd ride it first....if he thought it was something that I would love, despite the chance of illness, I'd take the chance. Well, he rode it, met me in the annoying game area after, and said "the first half is cool, but the rest is pretty boring. Don't chance it." I am happy with the feeling that I am not missing anything that big!

I was psyched up to ride without DH back in January, but after watching 3 people come out in the span of 10 minutes and barf.....well, I had second thoughts. I feel goofy after a ride on an elevator.....and the thought of hearing/seeing someone else puking just doesn't add to the theming.....IYKWIM.

But nausea aside, I think what really did it was seeing how cramped the 'quarters' are. I am claustrophobic, and I don't think I'd like just getting strapped in to the thing from the get go.

I'd love to try it, but I'm just too darn scared....yes, I'm a wimp with a healthy respect for my physical body and its limitations. :teeth:

I just had to laugh as I was reading these. Who knew there are other people out there who don't get sick on rides except for... the tea cups and carousel?! I thought I was the only silly one! Anyway, rode Mission Space two days ago for the first time and loved it! I've never been nervous getting on a ride before, but the spinning scared me. Almost chickened out after hearing the warnings for about the 10th time. Glad I didn't. I felt a little dizzy after but not at all sick. My head just felt a little funny for about 10 minutes. Good luck if you decide to try it!

The ride is a centrifuge, so technically, it spins, but not in the same way as a teacup ride, which can make me sick, but like those rides where you stand against a wall and are pressed against the sides and the floor drops out. So to me, it's not the kind of spinning that makes you sick because you don't know you are spinning, it just feels like gravity pushing you into the seat as long as you don't turn your head.

We rode Mission Space in guest previews last June. I'm a thrill ride junkie, love coasters. However spinning, twirling rides make me sick. I have a long history of moderate to severe motion sickness. DH doesn't, rides don't bother him. For whatever reason I didn't realize that MS was a centrifuge-slipping in my old age:) For that reason I didn't premedicate, but I did follow directions, had read about them on the dis. Well, I came this close to barfing. Hubby has a little off, but nothing major. Biggest problem was we both felt ill the rest of the night. I've never had anything effect me like this ride. I'm willing to try it again with medicine, but if it's bad it will be the last time. Pity, I like the ride. If you think you might get sick, premedicate with dramamine or bonine and follow directions to the lette. If it's bad sit down after and get something to drink. If all else fails first aid can give you something for nausea. I know this because we did all of things and none of them helped-but they usually do for most people.

I love rides..roller coasters especially..but this ride was so scary to me....I did feel sick...I didn't even blink I was so afraid of getting dizzy...I just felt terrified..I have never had a ride make me feel like that....i dont' know if i felt sick after from the fear or the ride itself...but I hated it
