Just a heads up. My sister went on Mission Space last week and said she thought she was going to die. She ignored the warnings and tried it and was sick for the rest of the day. I passed up on it last August because I chickened out. Now I'm glad I did.

I wish Disney would make a version of this ride that could be experienced by everyone. I would love to see the technology of this ride without ruining my day.

There have been many posts since Mission: Space opened about listening to the instructions of the Cast Members. It is critical on this type of ride to do as you are told. If you don't you will likely pay a price. I am not really into thrill rides but go on some because of my DS. We have had no problems on MS (except for some mild dizziness of my DS) because we followed the instructions. We also made sure we did not eat too close to riding. We both enjoy this ride and plan on future rides.

I myself am TERRIFIED of that ride. As much as I want to I am not going to try it. I can take any rollercoaster I can find, inverted corkscrews are great, but put me on a motion simulator and I am toast. even worse soggy old burnt toast. If Star tours had been 2 minutes longer. Many years ago went on the simulator ride at Sea World. Luckly that last thing of the day, When we got off I felt bad, Made it back to CBR having to keep swallowing for the last 5 mintues of drive. Got to the parking lot, threw the car in park, told wife to drive around and give my 5 minutes before her and kids came up. By the time they got to the room I was already passed out ont he bed. The ride almost killed me.. looking back at that know I can laugh but I have never put myself on that type of ride again.

Both my dh and I are torn whether to do this attraction or not. My dd-10 said we have to try it first, and my ds gets motion sickness so this is out.
Anyway, we thought that we may just try it on our way out of the park one evening. This way, if we feel sick, we are just on our way back to the condo and can go right to sleep.

The side effects of this ride are so over hyped. While I do personally know one person that had the icky side effects from riding this, the whole thing has been really overblown. There is no reason that a healthy person that doesn't have the tendency to become dizzy easily can't ride as long as they follow the instructions. Being nervous about this Mission is part of the attraction, but when you ride it, it's just not that intense. You might suprise yoursef if you just give it a chance folks. Maggie

I have to say that I agree with the above poster - the side effects of this ride have been over hyped. I read all about the ride from numerous posts on the boards and have to say I was a little weary of riding and I am never afraid of any type of rides. Well, DH and I decided to try it - it was an amazing ride and I am so glad I did it. Can't wait to go on it again in Oct.

Please note though that if you do suffer from motion sickness or can't handle simulators or spinning rides - you have a good chance of feeling those side effects from the ride that have been previously mentioned. My DH is a little sensitive to spinning rides and although he liked the ride, he did feel a bit "off" for an hour or two after the ride.

I agree.

I was toast on Body Wars, and Star Tours. I had NO ill side effects from Mission Space.

But, I also kept my head back, and my eyes on the video monitor at all times. I didn't even look away to push my button or move the joystick. I saw the light out of the corner of my eye.

Having said that, I didn't think this ride was ANYTHING special. If you want a good simulator, ride Spiderman at Universal. Disney does a LOT of things really well. Simulators ain't one of 'em.

I also have a tendancy to get sick on rides (StarTours for one....) and I won't even think about getting on a plane without taking Dramamine first (I have had a few very unpleasant experiences in the past) so I was very nervous about going on this ride and almost didn't go. I did want to try it just because of how cool I had heard it was from most people. Just to be safe we decided to make that the last ride of the day so that if I did get sick we were going to be heading back to the room anyway and it wouldn't ruin a day. All I have to say is FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS!!! A CM could tell I was nervous while waiting and asked if I was ok and I explained that I almost always get nausaus from motion/simulator rides. He told me to make sure I sat back in my seat, not to take my eyes off the screen or move my head side to side and I would be fine. He warned me that the people who get sick are the ones who close their eyes or start trying to look around at other people. And he was right...I didn't move and kept my eyes focused on what was going on in front of me and I didn't feel a thing and absolutely loved the ride. If you experience motion sickness, you can go on this ride - you just have to make sure you listen to what you are told before you go in. I'm leaving Friday morning and this is definately on the top of my list of attractions to go to! :teeth:

Hmmm, sounds like the attitude of most of today's society

I had heard all the bad things about MS when it opened. The kids wanted to go on, so my husband and I waited with them for the preshow thinking we would "meet them in the gift shop" at the end.

(I get sick if the merry-go-round lasts too long sometimes. I do like teacups though because spinning them yourself gives me something to concentrate on.)

At the last minute as they line you up in the hallway, I decided to go on. I was so glad I went. I did concentrate on holding head back and looking just at screen and was fine. I think "Lift off" was the best.

Now they middle age woman that was behind me in line......Got sick on the exit ramp off the ride. It was a shame, she was nice....

I'd hate to be a CM on that ride...

As a rule, if we are going to ride these "prone to sickness" type of rides, we do them first thing in the morning and on an empty stomach. (this includes kids too)

Does Bonine/Dramamine help?

How many people saw/heard someone throw up on or as you left the ride?

I am sensitive to rides that spin and a bit sensitive to motion simulators. If I'm woozy, I'm afraid seeing someone else get sick would push me over the edge. :(

I have some Bonine to try for this trip, and we go to MGM first... So if it helps for Star Tours, I guess I'll feel better about Mission Space.

My DH feels very sick on spinning rides and I feel a little sick on some simulators. We took ginger capsules before M:S, followed the instructions, and were fine. My DH insisted that we hadn't been spinning. We did the ride another time that day and once another day. He liked the ride a lot!

Bonine might help, but try it out at home first. It totally knocks us out for 24 hours, even when we take it in the evening (and that's taking only one tablet). Never again!

We got the concentrated ginger capsules at GNC (1000mg, 1-2 a day) and it seemed to help (he's not going to ride it without the ginger and see how he feels... ;) ).

T&B

Our family had not heard any bad comments about the ride, so we weren't expecting any issues. That may be why we all did fine with it (along with following the guidance provided before it began).

Of course, if you're reading this thread, you already know about the bad comments, so the "ignorance is bliss" approach is out for you! :teeth:

BTW, MS was my favorite ride and really made the whole vacation worth it for me. I watched all the Apollo missions when I was a little kid, so being able to go through even a simulated blast-off was an incredible experience for me. If you're in doubt, go ahead and do it. Star Tours affected me worse.

Bonine is my friend! :teeth:

I've gotten increasingly more sensitive to motion sickness in the past few years-- can't ride in the backseat of a car, even for short distances-- and forget about reading!! ICK!

I rode some type of ride at a tiny park amusement park a couple of years ago with my dd-- can't for the life of me remember what it was called, or anything-- it just lifted off the ground and went in big circles-- kinda similar to AstroOrbiter, or something... but oh, my gosh-- I literally had to stumble out of the ride and sit on the ground under a tree, for probably 30 minutes before I could even move.... it didn't help that a kid about 20 feet away was puking into a trash can.

Anyway.... I took Bonine for the first time in June, everyday, starting with the drive to WDW. I was able to read a little (I didn't "push it") and watch my dd's 5" DVD player some while riding in the van.... (front seat-- like I said, I wasn't taking too many chances...)

We rode EVERYTHING while at WDW, and I didn't have even the slightest tinge of nausea. I DID take two on the day we did Future World-- I was REALLY nervous about M:S, but did great... we only rode once, but that was because of the crowds, etc.

I did, however, follow the directions to the "T." I also made sure that my dd6 did, also. I drilled her in line about keeping her head back, etc., and also let her know that I wouldn't be able to look over to check on her, and NOT to look over at me, or her Dad. She's never had any motions sickness, but I didn't want this to be the first time.

We all did great, and loved it.

Can't wait to go back! (With a box of Bonine!!!) H :earsgirl: :earsboy: :earsgirl:

People who ride this ride just can't believe how sick some folks get and unfortunately I was one of those. I never get sick and I followed directions exactly but I thought I would die. It ruined several hours of that day. My kids weren't sympathetic either because they were fine. I don't think you can predict but to you who ride it just fine- those of us who don't are REALLY feeling bad. Its an incredible ride but I won't try it again.

Is a ride really worth the risk, if you have to follow the directions exactly??? There is too many fun things to do at Disney, I will pass on this ride. How can you enjoy a ride if all you are thinking about is surviving so you don't get sick. Not fun to me!:(

Actually the risk adds to the excitement and themeing.

I mean actual astronauts know there's risks of being weightless.

Also a chance of never coming home.....

(at least with the ride we know were still in FL)

If a ride at WDW has this many people sick, it does not look good for the private space travel industry.

I thought you have to build up the tolerance with ginger root. I did not think you could take 1 pill before you leave and it would work. I thought it was a once a day for a few weeks. Correct me if I am wrong.

I tried MS last November. I can't handle simulator rides very well. It did make me a little dizzy, but stupid me then went to Disney Quest and it was all over for me. We went to Disney again this past summer and I was going to skip MS but thought I would try these motion sickness wrist bands. I put them on right before I rode and it was amazing. NO SICKNESS!!! NO DIZZYNESS!!!
Give these a try. I was shocked at the price of them ($10.00) but worth every penny!

Me too! I hadn't heard about the trouble that so many people have with the ride and I initially thought that the motion sickness bags in the ride were just part of the theme-ing. Guess not.

I can ride rides all day, but I get terribly car sick. I had no trouble on this ride until we got to "Mars" and for just a second, my screen seemed out of focus. That did it and I was nauseous for a while afterwards. Don't know if I blinked too long, or if something happened with the image. Shame, I was having great time until then. I had been on a centrifuge before and learned the hard way not to look to the side (the attendent somehow failed to mention that part!)
