..........am I missing something? Today a 6 year old goes in the backyard to play, they can't find him, he's on the 5:30 news, they find him by 5:40 on the same street.

Yesterday, Amber Alert issued by a woman whose estranged husband has their sons. They both have court date together that very day for a custody hearing. He was stopped by police hours later, children taken from his car and into mother's car, as he was on the way to the court hearing with the children. Judge lambasts mother for inappropriate use of Amber Alert.

Last week a 2 year old goes missing, not on the news until the next evening. Search was called off because "it became dark", then resumed next day. Amber Alert not activated because "it didn't meet criteria". They think he's been picked up because scent dogs lose the scent abruptly. 4 year old sibling is taken into CPS custody because mother was not supervising children and can't say for sure how long they were gone. Couple days later, they say that they've decided he may have fallen into a sink hole 100 ft from where he was last seen and steps away from where the scent was dropped...............but they just now decided he might have fallen in?

Anybody else think it seems as if the two year old's case is being treated VERY differently? And he's still missing. Dh and I said immediately they must suspect the mother.........otherwise, why no Amber alert? Why call off the search just because it's dark? But even with that, why wait so long to think he may have fallen in the sinkhole? I feel as if the whole thing is handled strangely.....................................

Boy, I live in Texas and this is the first I've heard of it. What part of Texas is/was it?

I missed the one today. These are within the DFW area, with the 2yr it sounds like mom sent him and his brother to play while she was in the car with her boyfriend. I think the Amber is used mainly for kidnapping and they didn't suspect it at first. The next day they decided maybe someone did take him and activated an alert. CPS was called in because of conflicting stories from the mom on how long the boys were out of sight. Sadly it is sounding like the sink hole is likely to be where he was lost. There should be some articles online at www.dallasnews.com .

Maybe the reason they were treated differently was because they were different. The first one sounds like the mother may have made it seem that the children were taken by the father and they issued the Amber Alert for the father and his car. The second was just a child missing. I'm not sure how its used in Texas, but out here they issue Amber Alerts when they have a car description. Generally for suspected kidnappings. They can't issue an Amber Alert for every child missing unfortunately.

If we don't reserve the Amber Alert for emergencies that fit certain criteria, we'd have so many amber alerts that no one would pay attention. When AA was originally conceived, it was only for suspected stranger abductions - family abductions didn't qualify unless there was a realistic belief that the family member might kill the child. Now, they issue amber alerts for kidnappings related to custody battles. I think that's a mistake.
