Missed attractions

The original Journey into Imagination...I miss Dreamfinder...and the original story of Figment! I also miss the Skyway at MK. This was always such a delightful trip across the park. ::MinnieMo

I was very bummed when I went to WDW for the first time in 20 something years last year and saw they had no Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. We go to DL alot and I just assumed it was still there.

--If you had wings ... sponsored by the old Eastern Airlines!
--The Main Street Magic Store where you could buy magician kits
--The Diamond Horshoe Review ... used to get counter service there and watch a really corny, funny show

I think you've touched on something I miss very much...unusual shops and merchandise. My husband and I went to Disney World for our honeymoon in 1977 when the Magic Kingdom was all there was. But even then we came home with some special and unusual souveniers from Main Street and other "land" shops. Now the merchandise in the stores seems to be so...homogenized. It's pretty much the same stuff in every store. And nothing really special anymore. :worried:

- The original Illuminations
- Horizons
- Hunchback of Notre Dame
- The original Enchanted Tiki Room
- The original Journey into Imagination
- Kitchen Cabaret
- World of Motion
- Food Rocks

I really miss all of these, but the first three are the ones I miss the most. (Bring back the Gershwin!)

I second the original Illuminations and DH does as well, as he couldn't stop griping about the music in the new one.

Mr. Toad!

And lemme tell you, if they EVER remove CoP for any reason, I would miss it till the day I died. I LOVE that attraction!

How about "If You Had Wings-had wings, had wings, had wings, had wings..." :D .

I love that one when I was a kid. That was so much fun and never a line

In Epcot, Mexico now has a little boat ride. If you watch....you can see the filims from "If You Had Wings" still being played over and over agian. (cliff diving and a few other film clips from the 70's

The original Journey into the Imagination and World of Motion. Also, the one in MK that starts with "Dream (something)" about aviation. I miss all of them and I'll never think the new "thrill" rides are better than these. I don't miss 20,000 as it was a long line, a bunch of people crammed in a little space to see obviously fake fish (I was 11 at the time and I had a HUGE imagination, but the fish still looked really fake) underwater. But I will always miss any ride they take out because it takes away a piece of Disney to me. I'm only 23 so it's not THAT nostalgic, but if I want an intense thrill ride there are hundreds of amusement parks around the country I could go to, just my HO.

***Also, I miss the little movie theater on Main Street at MK that had four screens that played old black and white (and some early color ones) Disney cartoons on them. It was so dark and peaceful in there and I always felt like Walt was in there smiling.

It was at Disneyland, so I assume it was at Disney World: Captain EO.

Is this the 3D show with Michael Jackson in it? If it is I really miss that one. It used to be at Epcot at WDW (where Honey I shrunk the audience is now) and it was such a great show.

Both of the songs used in CoP are by the Sherman Brothers who wrote lots of the great Disney songs in the 60's (It's a Small World, Mary Poppins... just SO many!)

When Walt Disney himself commissioned the music for CoP he wanted to accentuate the story that "progress" means that even though "today seems great, tomorrow is going to be better." The Shermans responded with "There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" (the song that you currently hear in the CoP at WDW.)
Walt LOVED it, it was a huge hit at the 1964 World's Fair in NYC and my family and I got to see/hear it at Disneyland after it was finally set-up there after the fair.
WE loved it (I was about 15 years old then) and rode that carousel over and over.
When CoP was moved to WDW, the Shermans were asked to write a new song (the CoP was sponsored by GE) that stated that "NOW is the Best Time" ostensibly because it meant to "go ahead and buy appliances TODAY," don't wait until "tomorrow" (or you'll never do it.)
As a kid who had grown up with the ORIGINAL SONG, I was a bit disappointed with the NEW one.
So, years later, when I discovered that the CoP had re-opened with the ORIGINAL song back IN, I was SO HAPPY! (I couldn't believe that the present-day Imagineers had taken the time to nearly RESTORE the new CoP to its earlier Walt Disney-supervised glory!)
I can understand that it those of you who were FIRST-initiated to the CoP with the SECOND song, would have nostalgia for THAT one... but Walt himself chose the FIRST one (that's there now) and I LOVE IT!
BTW, the present voice of the host (and the "father" on-stage) is Jean Shepherd, author and narrator for the perennial
favorite "A Christmas Story" (you'll shoot your eye out!)

The original actor Walt chose for this part was Rex Allen, Sr. who also quite ably narrated most of Disney's "animal films" in the 60's, and who was also a prominent "Cowboy Film Star" in the 50's.
Rex Sr.'s voice is currently that of the Grandfather in the final Christmas vignette of the present CoP. (When I first heard that voice I nearly broke down... what a beautiful tribute to the original show!)

A third voice that's prominently featured is "Uncle Orville" ("No privacy atoll around this place!")
He is voiced by the great Mel Blanc, Sr. (Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Yosemite Sam, Marvin the Martian... all the WB classic voices AND Barney Rubble!)
Mel is also the voice of the Parrot in another of the CoP scene.
These Mel Blanc tracks were actually lifted FROM the original audio used in the first CoP and, again, is an elegant nod to Walt's creation.

Alas, all three of these wonderful "voices" have passed on... but we can still enjoy their inimitable craft-work in the CoP.

Long may it continue to spin us into the future!

I gues I was born at just the right time to have both these songs commited to memory and bring warm fuzzies when I think of them...** singing both songs to herslef**

I will really miss Alien Encounter. I thought it was the coolest ride in the world and it really sent chills down my spine. What I liked is how real they made it feel and the fear was psychological and not from a roller coaster thrill ride. I was surprised to read that it wasn't too popular. This will be my first trip to WDW in years and last time I was there we rode it. I was really looking forward to riding it again.

The other ride I liked was Delta's Dream Flight. I thought it was very sweet and nostalgic. However with corporate sponsorships, it does make sense that it wouldn't be there forever.

Mr Toad's Wild Ride, Food Rocks/Kitchen Cabaret and the original Figment ride: journey into imagination :O(

definetly crannium command!

i was shocked when i heard this because it has my favorite line in all of disney world: there is a drill sargent shouting "what do you think this is, disney world?"

i cracked up so much on my first time seeing it
