Miss California.

And like I said, that would be lying. You can't be neutral when you start by saying "I believe".

And every pageant girl truly wants "world peace" over a shiny crown and a picture in the paper?
This is Miss America, it's a beauty pageant for goodness sake!! There is a certain degree in which everyone "lies" (/leaves out the truth/their opinion) in order to please the judges and win.
Though I can hardly see how staying neutral when it comes to a hot topic lying though.

"Each state should have the right to choose" isn't a lie.

If this turns into an argument about how it's wrong to lie I'm out. lol

sorry to jump in here late.

honestly, i don't give a crap about miss america, but why the heck was she talking about gay people anyway?
what does that possibly have to do with being pretty and smart and whatever else you're supposed to be to be miss america?
if i got blasted every time i gave my opinion, damn...
but like i said, i have no idea what is going on.
i don't even know if it was on tv.
and why was perez hilton a judge?
what does he know?

could someone just fill me in on why she was asked to speak about her view on gay rights?

Every pageant, big or small, has a section where each contestant gets asked a question, most likely current events for the older ladies. Miss America is no exception.
Perez Hilton was a judge because he is a celebrity, and the Miss America competition features celebrity judges to ask the question parts and judge the contestants.

ahhhhhhh, i see, i see.
my bad.
i guess she just got lucky... or unlucky... by being asked a serious question like that.
thanks.
:]

if my tv isn't on baseball, wrestling, or those vh1 shows, it isn't on, so i never even hear about this stuff.
maybe i should get out more often.
XD

Or read gossip rags and watch youtube like I do.
;)

What do you mean? By that logic, any answer given would have been her "personal beliefs". If she said the opposite, would that not also have been stating her "personal beliefs"? You can't compromise a question like this.

So she was supposed to lie?
Thank you! You seriously have a better way of wording than I do.

Thank you for taking my words out of context.
I honestly don't care what the answer was, neither does anyone else. Sure, I don't agree with it, but whatever. The way she said it is what's the heat here. It is one thing to say you don't agree with the way gays live their life, it is another to say the same thing while being condescending and alienating, a la Miss California.

2nd, doesn't Miss America go to the Miss Universe pageant to "represent" the USA? That's where the "representing all of America" comes in.

I didnt take your words out of context, you asked how someone would feel if someone was outlawing or beliefs, implying that that was what Miss CA was going to do...
and you can't represent all of America by staying neautral. I would eventually want people to know who I am and be able to represent that way.

Dont worry, I dont watch this either, I saw it on CNN (my homepage)...But the discussion is supposed to be about how she worded her answer...

But that's not the point! Miss America is NOT about representing yourself anymore, you finished that stage when you won your county pageant! Miss America is, once again, about representing the WHOLE country. America is about the freedom to choose, is it not? THAT'S how you represent America, by not intercepting your beliefs and allowing the rest of the citizens to choose.

By "outlawing it", Miss California stated she didn't believe in gay marriage implying that it should not be legal. Thus, outlawing it in the states that allow it currently.

ok ok.. I dont watch miss america, or know anything about it.. so when i heard perez or whoever ask her a question, and her answer it... i wasnt shocked. I thought thats what questions were meant for. she couldve presented it better.
Im out

I'd bet that if she had agreed with Perez Hiltons' views on gay marriage, and didn't execute her words perfectly, nobody would have gotten upset or blinked twice. The fact is obvious---that this is about her believing in traditional marriage between a man and a woman. Good for her for standing up for her beliefs, and answering the question truthfully (she was asked for her opinion). Perez Hilton is a loser. A pig. I have no respect for him at all. I guess he only likes people who agree with him.... and he handled things with the upmost immaturity afterward. I think this was a hard question, and I don't even think it was fair to ask that question. I also know how hard it is to speak in front of a crowd----and to give an un PC answer? I'm sure that made her more nervous. Give her a break. I wish her a lot of luck and happiness.

:woohoo:

Wow, no reason to bump this up.
Second, if dismom2, would like to read my previous posts you would see that no one gave a crap about her personal opinion. The fact she put it where it didn't belong is the problem!

Which is how it's supposed to be done. ;)
You either find a smart way to dance around the question, or you alienate one half of America. And remember, Miss America is supposed to represent ALL of America. Miss America has NO business putting her personal beliefs in the middle of pageant business. Thus, she lost the crown.

She said she did not support gays. In. Front. Of. A. Gay. Man. And. To. His. Face.
I don't give a crap if you do not like gays. But to state it to a gay man is not classy.

What's your passion in life? I'm going to assume it's racing just because I don't know much about you. If someone told you they didn't believe in racing and were going to outlaw it in this country, you'd be mad wouldn't you? Especially if they told you that straight to your face.

You're saying she should lie. "Dancing around a question" is lying, and it's not "smart". Personally, I'm sick of BSers, and people who lie in order to be PC. We, as Americans have the right to freedon of speech.

As for her having no business putting her personal beliefs in a pageant--- wrong again. She was asked a direct question (not like she just put it out there---she was asked and had to answer---immediately), and if I want ANYone representing America, it's someone who know's how to be honest. Someone who is confident enough not to let a gay man bully her into feeling guilty about her own beliefs. Shame on him for asking that question to begin with. He knew she'd either better agree with him and HIS views, or he was going to make her life hell. Well, I think he made himself look like the idiot he is, and now she is moving on. A "gay man" should not have asked that question. What a bully. Then he publically called her names?? Just for being honest? He's making himself look really bad.

They should screen those questions. She could have been asked about immigration, abortion, who political party she is registered as, etc.... and no matter what, if she answered truthfully, she would have offended a lot of people. Totally unfair. She shouldnt have to agree with everyone in the world---not to mention, that's impossible. This is an outrage.

I respect her for answering the question truthfully. She should not have to lie about her beliefs just to be looked at as a good representative of America.

And yes---you, I and everyone else knows darn well that this IS about the fact that she believes in traditional marriage between a man and a woman.
And by the way, a person canno't support everything. Maybe we should get a robot to be the next winner.

You pretty much just summed up all my posts... but with better wording :thumbsup2

Well then, how do you think a pageant contestant should represent America? By leading the rest of the world to believe we all (as in Americans, who Miss America is representing) agree with/disagree with gay marriage at the Miss Universe pageant? Because that's lying too.

Like I said, maybe the gay marriage thing is for others, but it is not important to me or from the other posters that I have seen. This thread is not about WHAT she said, it's about HOW she said it. Please do not mistake that.

I just listened to it again. She did say she thought it was great that people in America had the right to choose. Then she said that personally, she was raised to believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. She said "no offense" because she truly didn't want to offend anyone---yet still be able to answer honestly. I think the only mistake she made was when she said "in our country". I've watched it several times and I think she was just nervous and stumbling her words because---lets face it---she was trying to stay true to herself and her religious beliefs yet she probably knew her answer wasn't going to sit well with everyone. That's got to be hard to answer a question like that in front of the whole world. So, I think this is why she had trouble being articulate---- it happens to everyone. Just today on the news I saw recaps of our President, and Vice President making big errors while publically speaking. Gee--should we all have a big discussion about it, and fire them because they can't speak well enough? She stumbled her words, but it is obvious what her intent was, and we all know what she was trying to say. If people can no longer have an opinion in America, it's a sad, sad day.
Perez should be happy he lives in a day where he can be openly gay. If he is berating Miss California for stating her personal opinion, then he should not be able to state his, either. He's being a hypocrite.

How do I want America represented? I want people to know we have freedom of speech, and have the right to our own opinion still. Again---she covered her basis by saying she was glad that we have the right to choose. But, in order to answer the question, she had to give her opinion. And since she didn't agree with Perez he couldn't handle that. Too bad Perez. Get used to it---not everyone is going to agree with you, and that is our right as Americans.

Okay, I'm not even going to get into the rest of your post, I'll just talk about the part that was directed at my response.

Gay marriage is a political issue. Hence, why I said she was stating her political beliefs. But perhaps I should've said 'moral beliefs' instead.

I was keeping MY personal politics (/morals) to myself in my response, which was a response to the original question of the thread, nothing to do with the politics of the statement.
Anyways, I'm sorry if I'm coming across as rude or hostile, but I'm slightly irked that you took two words out of my response and turned it into something political when that was not my intention.

Anyways, like Sonya said, if there was a question about an issue that was just as hot topic as gay marriage and someone said something along those lines...I'd be just as upset.

For example if there was a question about immigration, if the contestant was asked something along the lines of helping immigrants or refugees and the response was
"I think it's great that in America there are many immigrants...[insert rest of quote here], but in my country, I personally don't believe we should be helping immigrants and refugees..."
SOMETHING along those lines...I think it'd be just as controversial.

Anyways, please don't take my example out of context, I know those are two very different things, but I'm just trying to provide an example of another "bad" answer in which a contestant alienates a large portion of the American population.

Sorry for the novel hehe. Hope at least someone got through reading that.

Extremely contoversial, moral, and political questions should NOT be allowed in pageants. It's simply asking for trouble. And a person who is on one extreme part of the spectrum should NOT be allowed to ask the question. It's a terrible position to put anyone in. I could give a great example from the bible (about a certain some who denied a certain someone because he was afraid to tell the truth), but we won't go there.

The point is, she shoul've been more articulate. She running for Miss America for goodness sakes, she should have her public speaking skills refined. She used a very poor choice of words.

Then let's make a thread about every other contestant who stumbled over words, and wasn't to articulate?
