Miss California.

Can we all just agree the Perez Hilton has NO right to say what he said...idc if you are gay straight bi or whatever you never call a girl those names even when joking. She was stating her opinion on gay marriage, and just because he didn't hear what he wanted to hear, he is bashing her non-stop. She is taking it to and saying she is praying for him. Its funny how a probably young girl in her twenties can be stronger than a probably 35 year old blogger(he gossips for gosh sake...that should have ended in high school)

While I agree that it's pretty out of line for Perez to call her all that he's called her....if someone said something insulting towards myself and tons of other people, I'd probably have some choice words as well. haha.

Like, for instance, people ALWAYS smack talk my home province of Quebec...people always make negative remarks about it when I tell them that's where I'm from. And I'm proud to be from Quebec, so it's something that totally makes me angry and I really don't appreciate it.

So while I think Perez has been pretty out of line with all his blogging about Miss Cali, I can see how being offended/insulted about something you are proud of is something that can spark a fire within. hehe.

(I hate to say I'm getting sick to death of all Perez' blogs/tweets about her though...ENOUGH!)

But anyways, I'm not trying to change anyone's opinions, just expanding on my own.

I'm with you Caitlin, if I read one more tweet from Perez about Miss California, I'm going to un-follow him! It's so irritating. I understand why he is mad, and I believe he has that right, but there's a way to be respectable and classy about it.

I agree Perez had no right to say that... and I completely agree with addicted.to.speed... as I said earlier, you can't reall rep the whole country especially when someone asks you your'e opinion, otherwise its like she wouldnt have answered the question. I think she did answer the question, she said she believes in hetrosexual, and i think that it is a clear answer.

I dont understand what she said wrong? just because she stated her own opionon how she thinks it should only be heterosexual marriage?...im just curious whats going through all your guys heads, trying to get a different prospective for the whole agenda :)

Which is how it's supposed to be done. ;)
You either find a smart way to dance around the question, or you alienate one half of America. And remember, Miss America is supposed to represent ALL of America. Miss America has NO business putting her personal beliefs in the middle of pageant business. Thus, she lost the crown.

She said she did not support gays. In. Front. Of. A. Gay. Man. And. To. His. Face.
I don't give a crap if you do not like gays. But to state it to a gay man is not classy.

What's your passion in life? I'm going to assume it's racing just because I don't know much about you. If someone told you they didn't believe in racing and were going to outlaw it in this country, you'd be mad wouldn't you? Especially if they told you that straight to your face.

Well...since we're not allowed political threads anymore, I'm going to have to try and word this as carefully as possible without putting my political beliefs in it. I think most of you already know my stance on the actual issue though.

What I think about the whole thing I've already said in this thread. Yes she was asked a question of opinion, so if she hadn't stating her opinion she wouldn't be answering the question. But you see that all the time in pageants, girls are asked a questions but know how to skate around it so that they don't have to put their own opinion in. I'm not going to say whether or not her opinion was right or wrong, but I do believe that in a situation like Miss America, where you're meant to be representing America...you should certainly keep that in mind.
I'm not American so I can't speak for you guys, but I think when representing a country where 'Liberty for all' is one of the main ideas that the country was established upon...you need to be mindful of that during a situation such as Miss America.

That's my way of thinking on the topic, and whether or not I think the content of her answer was good, I just think the answer itself was not good.

Yeah I completely and totally agree with this. :thumbsup2
Very good points Sonya!

I'm with addicted to speed still... she said nothing wrong, and she never said she was going to "outlaw" anything..she wouldn't have the right. I wonder... why is someone getting so much heat about answering the question.. lets all admitt that people are upset with what she said in reply to the question and NOT as upset about her miswording and stumbling over a couple things...If she had said the answer Perez was looking for, there wouldnt be such a huge debate in my opinion. and the whole representing ALL of america still throws me...

Thank you for taking my words out of context.
I honestly don't care what the answer was, neither does anyone else. Sure, I don't agree with it, but whatever. The way she said it is what's the heat here. It is one thing to say you don't agree with the way gays live their life, it is another to say the same thing while being condescending and alienating, a la Miss California.

2nd, doesn't Miss America go to the Miss Universe pageant to "represent" the USA? That's where the "representing all of America" comes in.

What do you mean? By that logic, any answer given would have been her "personal beliefs". If she said the opposite, would that not also have been stating her "personal beliefs"? You can't compromise a question like this.

She said she did not support gays. In. Front. Of. A. Gay. Man. And. To. His. Face.
I don't give a crap if you do not like gays. But to state it to a gay man is not classy.
So she was supposed to lie?

Yes, DizzyPirate is wondering how you're supposed to do that.

Short answer: you can't. Or else you'd be sending an automaton as Miss USA.

We've said this numerous times on this thread already.
The way to represent all of America,a land of freedom and choice, in a situation like this, is to remain neutral when it comes to hot topic political issues.

This is how you could do it:

"The great thing about America is that you get to choose, and I believe that each state should have the right to choose for themselves whether or not to legalize gay marriage."

Remain neutral, but still answer the question

And like I said, that would be lying. You can't be neutral when you start by saying "I believe".

So she was supposed to lie?

Stay neutral - answer the question without actually answering the question. And, if you think any level of pageantry doesn't involving lying, you've got a whollllllllleeeeeeee lot to discover!

I'll admit it. I do not agree with her opinion, but it's hers to have. That's not the subject of this thread though. We're speaking about how she delivered her answer, that is all.

When you are representing America, you have to represent ALL of it. That means (like Caitlin and Sonya have said) staying neutral on the hot topics.

Also, I have to wonder what happened to her manners? You just don't say something condescending about someone's beliefs to their face, especially not on national television. Even when you're debating someone, you have to stay respectful.

I have watched it many times and her tone sounds exactly like any pagaentry answer...and yes girls do lie in it but I think a lot of people want a girl who is honest and not out to just win but to actually be somethinig more than another pretty face.

sorry to jump in here late.

honestly, i don't give a crap about miss america, but why the heck was she talking about gay people anyway?
what does that possibly have to do with being pretty and smart and whatever else you're supposed to be to be miss america?
if i got blasted every time i gave my opinion, damn...
but like i said, i have no idea what is going on.
i don't even know if it was on tv.
and why was perez hilton a judge?
what does he know?

could someone just fill me in on why she was asked to speak about her view on gay rights?
