I know that some cramps are normal in the first trimester. Am I correct to assume that cramps indicating a miscarriage would hurt a lot? The cramps I'm having are no more than a 1.5 on a scale from one to ten.

I'm at high risk for miscarriage and have freaked myself out!

Thanks!

Cramps could mean anything in the first trimester and are not necessarily an indication that anything bad is happening.

All my m/c were very early and my cramping was bad. But I also had cramps when I thought AF was coming and it was just implantation.

Everything is growing and shifting in your body and some woman may have more pain than others.

As long as you don't have spotting, I would not be too concerned at this stage. But I TOTALLY understand how difficult that can be.

Since you are at high risk, you can simply call the nurse with your office. They are there to answer any and all questions and if you have a concern, you pay for their guidance and expertise to let you know if you have anything to worry about or not.

I had cramping AND bad spotting with my son (who is a healthy robust 4 year old!). It necessitated a visit to the ER. I could have bet either way what the outcome would have come as I had a m/c prior to my pregnancy with him. This was in the 2nd tri and everything was fine. But the cramps--were still quite troublesome and questionable. (in the end, it was a minor separation of the placenta from the uterine wall, a result of not quite attaching firmly enough in that spot per my OB's opinion).

I wish you a H+H 9 months and hope that it is just growing pains.:wizard:

It's completely normal to have mild to moderate and even stronger cramps, depending on the individual. I've had two miscarriages (one was with a twin pregnancy and absorbed by my body) and in both I had bleeding before any cramping occurred. Once I started cramping it was severe. In fact, when I went to the doctor, he said I was fully dilated!

Try not to worry. You're going to have a lot of pains and funny feelings (and possibly even some light bleeding) in that area throughout your pregnancy and it's completely normal.

Thanks!

That's exactly what I thought! I just needed someone else to say it. I don't have any spotting or really any real pain. I'm just aware that its happening, does that make sense?

I considered calling the doctor/nurse, but I knew they would tell me it was normal. Logically, I know that its normal. Stupid internet freaked me out!

I know exactly what you mean. I had that 'feeling' during all 3 of my pregnancies. usually right around when my period would be due. Congrats and I hope you have a wonderful and healthy pregnancy.

I had cramps AND spotting in my first trimester, both totally normal. In fact, I had some 1.5 out of 10 cramps this AM.

This is just the beginning of the crazy things that happen during pregnancy!

step away from the internet.

If you are truly worried call your doctor. That is what they are there for. Other than that, try to relax (I know I know it impossible), put your feet up if you can and drink plenty of fluids.

My OB was okay with me renting a doppler. However, it is best to NOT rent one until the OB is able to reliably able to pick it up on his/her doppler. The one I rented was similar to the one he had. I even brought it in and showed him as he wanted to make sure I wasn't getting one of the over the counter cheapo ones.

It was a life saver for my sanity. I rented mine at about 10 weeks along or so. And anytime I got nervous, I went a hunting for that h/b. I did that more with my son than my recent daughter though. I probably checked more than was necessary. My OB took my concerns seriously if I did not find it when I should have been able to...it was the doppler that determined we should go to the ER, since I had been able to locate his h/b regularly for a month. Apparently he was hiding somewhere b/c they did find it in the ER, but did do an U/S to confirm health and confirm that he was fine.

I don't remember who I rented from--but google and you shall find. Just don't get one until after h/b has been confirmed or you will drive yourself bananas.

aww I'm sorry for your nervousness.

But to answer your question I didn't have any cramps at all when I miscarried - just the doc telling me when I went for a checkup

Call your nurse & talk to her - she'll help you ease your fears. If you don't know about babycenter.com - its a FABULOUS site out there - you can chat with other moms that are due the same time you are & see if they are feeling the same things you are....

I've had a miscarriage where I had horrid cramping and spotting brown for a few days before and also had one where there was zero cramping and I just started bleeding. My last pregnancy I spotted/cramped all the way up until I was 21 weeks. So no real advice, just a  and I hope it something minor like stretching or constipation.

I agree with the previous poster who said to step away from the internet. I'm not sure what issue puts you at high risk but maybe rest a bit, put your feet up and find something to keep you distracted.

I always had mild cramping during the first trimester, and no m/c. I've known woman who've had no cramping ending up with a m/c, and women with heavy cramping and bleeding ending up with a healthy pregnancy. I don't know if this helps or not, but if you have a m/c in the first trimester, there is nothing anyone can do to stop it, and nothing you have done to cause it.

I rented a dopplar with #2 and #3 (babybeat.com?). I drove myself nuts with #1, always wondering when she moved last. I didn't bother with my twins, because someone was always moving, and I couldn't be sure if I got 2 separate hb's, and would drive myself nuts. I suggest renting, but only when you are farther along, and able to get a hb every time (or else you will drive yourself nuts).

Happy pregnancy!

This

If you are worried call your doctor. describe the cramps and they'll either tell you it's normal or ask you to come in to be checked out just in case.

I'd rather be safe than sorry and consult the doctor especially if I was high risk and worried about it

Trust me... they are used to women calling who are scared and need to be reassured

It's a genetic/chromosomal issue that would cause the miscarriage. I gave birth to a baby last year who had massive heart problems that couldn't be repaired after birth. I'm not sure resting would make a difference in that case, but I'm all for sitting around watching tv!:happytv:

I would absolutely not get a doppler. Carrick's (my son who died) heartrate was strong and perfect in utero. It's unfortunate that something that is so reassuring for most moms does nothing for me. To be honest, I think I would advise against people getting one given my experiences. All the doppler is going to do is confirm that the baby is alive assuming you can find the baby's heartbeat and are sure that it isn't yours.

I'm also aware of the whole missed miscarriage thing. That's actually one of my bigger fears right along with this baby not being okay and us not being able to continue the pregnancy. I have a longish time to go before we can do any testing too since I'm not even eight weeks yet.

Sometimes I wish I knew less about what my risks are. I had the same risks last time and just didn't know it. I was a lot more relaxed even though it was my first pregnancy!

Thank you all so much for your help! Sometimes you just need someone to confirm what you already knew. Know what I mean?

I lost a baby at 18 weeks last year. I urge you to call your doctor about anything and everything that you can. Even if they just tell you that you are crazy. You never know.....

I had a friend whose baby was moving a ton. More than normal. She didn't call and she lost the baby. Turns out moving a ton is a sign of distress.

I'm not trying to freak you out, it's just my opinion after suffering the loss in my 3rd pregnancy (I had 2 healthy children).

I've had two miscarriages. With the first one I would have strong cramps and then bleed. The second m/c was different. I spotted then bled for a week.
Cramping can be totally normal but to know for sure if your baby is alive you should go and see your doctor. Like PP have said, that is what they are there for. You are high risk so they should be accomodating. In fact I hope they have done a couple of ultrasounds already assuming you are early.

As for renting a doppler. I rented one with my last pregnancy. $40/month bought my sanity and saved my marriage....lol We used it all the way til the end because I was very neurotic.

I know that some cramps are normal in the first trimester. Am I correct to assume that cramps indicating a miscarriage would hurt a lot? The cramps I'm having are no more than a 1.5 on a scale from one to ten.

Please dont take this the wrong way but

THIS IS A QUESTION FOR YOU DOCTOR ASAP!!!!

Youre a high risk, you should be reporting ANYTHING unusual to your PMD

I will be 12 weeks along on Friday and I have cramped a lot this first trimester. It comes and goes, and is never worse than normal period cramps, but so far everything has looked great over the course of 8 ultrasounds and umpteen doctor appts (I am higher risk for a variety of reasons).

I suffered a miscarriage several years ago right before I got pg with my twins. In that case the cramping was so bad it required percocet and it was mainly in my back, which was weird because I never get period cramps back there. Also, the minute I finished passing everything (sorry if TMI) they abruptly stopped.

Good luck! I completely understand your fears. Although I have never lost a baby after the first trimester I have several friends who have lost in second and third trimesters for one reason or another and I don't think I'll be happy until I have a healthy baby in my arms. I am really a nervous wreck!

Call your doctor. This isn't a question that can be answered by anyone on this forum..everyone is different. As a high risk patient, your doctor should be available to answer your questions and reassure you.
AVOID RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET!!

Honey, if you have any questions at all, call your doctor.
