Mint challenge to save $1,000 by Labor Day.

A lot of good ideas!!! :thumbsup2

We always tend to go to our local lake/city beach a couple of days a month. We will buy hot dogs and buns and some chips, and pack beverages from home. The kids will spend a few hours playing in the sand and water. It a fun and cheap alternative to a movie or anything else!

I couldn't help but notice this typo: Hey, I live close to my home! :rotfl:

Taken from the Article:

Rethink Your Ride

If you live close to home, consider biking or walking to work once or twice a week. You’ll not only save on gas and mileage, you’ll get a workout, which means you can cut back on the expensive yoga classes and the personal trainer sessions. If that’s not possible, consider ride-sharing in summer months with other people in your office, or neighborhood, that work nearby. According to the Sustainable Cities Institute, “an individual commuting with one other person on a 30 miles roundtrip, in a 25 mpg vehicle, with gas at $2.50/gal, would save between $1,140 (including one-half of variable costs) and $2,042 (including one-half of all costs) annually.”

It's an interesting idea even though I think that some of the savings ideas are unimaginative.

Take a staycation? Really? What a novel idea! Wow, and to think that my parents did that wayyyy back in the '70s.

Walk or bike instead of drive and save on your gym membership. Get a workout while you commute to your job. Arrive sweaty and exhausted to start your day. Your co-workers will appreciate your dedication to the environment.

Cook at home. Another stroke of brilliant, out-of-the-box thinking.

Cut cable services. Is there an echo in here?

Avoid impulse purchases and "today only" deals. Half the threads on the budget board would go unread!

With 98 days to go between today and Labor Day, you will need to put away $10+/day in order to meet this savings goal. Not necessarily impossible, especially if you're wasting that much on a daily basis. But with so many people struggling to make ends meet, $75/week is not part of their discretionary spending.

I agree.

The only idea that would apply to me is to turn off the ac.
Summer in Memphis without air conditioning, no thanks.

I thought it might be a good inspiration for someone. Because we have a lot coming up to save for, we would have been above $1000 for the summer anyway, but to the right person it could be a great goal.

Yep, there is only one thing worse than a summer in Florida without A/C and that is a summer in Memphis without it. I spent my summers there as a child. Talk about HOT.
