We are in the market to buy a new digital camera. I had a pns, that doesn't focus all the time. We have a old Minolta 35mm camera, but want to get a dslr. I have been researching and have pretty much decided on the Pentax K100d super. Dh wants to look at a camera that will fit this zoom lens from his old minolta. The lens is a 60mm-300mm f:4.0-5.6 Macro/one-touch Minolta "M" Mount. If I'm correct I believe it would fit the Sony A100, please correct me if I'm wrong. Because I'm pretty new to the slr cameras, what exactly would this lens be good for? This is the only other lens he has besides a 50mm. Is it worth buying the Sony because he has these lenses? I'm just looking for opinions, before we make a final decision. TIA!

Let me add, he is someone who doesn't like to get rid of his older possessions.

minolta M mount..???

what model was his camera..

if it's autofocus it should work, if it is an old manual focus the lens will not work..

with the autofocus lenses, the older ones had 5 contacts, for transferring certaininfo from lens to camera, the newer ones have 8,, the old lenses will still work, you just don't get some of the newer features such as ADI focusing

the sony a 100 is a good camera, the new a 700 is even better...

The camera is a manual camera XG1? My parents have the auto focus 35mm. If these lenses are useless then I will probably go with the Pentax. or I could go with the Sony and use their lenses and buy other lenses they don't have.

the sony would definitely be an option.. in addition to buying sony lenses to supplement those available to you, you can also find decent deals on used minolta auto focus lenses..

If it's just the one lens, I don't know that it's worth buying into one particular system for it. I don't think that an older average-speed long zoom manual-focus lens is particularly valuable (and from what I've heard, older Minolta-mount lenses are particularly inexpensive).

Not that that should discourage you from considering the Sony, but I wouldn't put a lot of value into such a lens. Now, if he had a pile of fast primes or high-end zooms, that would be a very different story!
