My 12 year old son was prescribed minocycline yesterday by our doctor for his acne. He also prescribed Epiduo topical gel to use along with it. He took his first dose of the minocycline tonight, but the Epiduo won't be in at our pharmacy until Monday.

I read some information on minocycline, and I am a little concerned about the side effects. If anybody has had any experiences with this medication (both good and bad), I'd love to hear about it. Also, if it worked for you, how long did it take to start working? Thanks.

DD16 took minocycline for 2 years and never had any side effects.

I have used it. I had bad chin adult acne. I didn't have any side effects, and It worked really good. You should take pictures of his face weekly to see the differences so you will know if it is working ok.
I'm pretty picky about what I take and I too had alot of worries but It did work.

I've taken it in the past with great results and no adverse side effects.

DD started taken minocycline when she was 14 she started having blurred vision, sever headaches. We took her to the eye doctor and found she had swelling behind her eyes. They sent us to Childrens hospital to see a specialist which diagnosed her with paplademia sp?. She had a have a spinal tab took her of the minocycline and today she is fine.

Oh no, that's terrible. I'm glad she's okay now.

Hopefully my son won't have those kind of issues.

I was on Minocycline for my rosacea and I didn't tolerate it very well. I ended up with a reaction that my doctor didn't believe I was having. I had vertigo and felt very dizzy all the time. I didn't really feel comfortable driving in that condition.
Finally got tired of being told it was my imagination and went in to talk to the pharmacist who verified that Mino could cause those side effects.
Went off the meds and was fine within a week or so.

Good luck to your son..........I think most people do fine on it.

I took it as a teen for acne and it did not work having said that everyone is different so I hope your son gets good results!

I took it for hormonal/chin acne as an adult and it worked great -- until I started getting hives about a month into it. They determined i was allergic to it, so they took me off of it.

My son's been on it for about 15 months now. It works VERY slowly -- we didn't start to see any change for about 3-4 months, and I would say that by 6 months, he was reasonably clear. He hasn't had any complications, but the effects haven't been consistent, either, and I think I may ask the doctor to try something different. One thing he doesn't like is that you can't have any dairy at the same time, so he can't have cereal for breakfast.

I took this in college for acne. I had taken tetracycline for years and it never helped. I was doing student teaching and had skin worse than my high school students. A new dermatologist put me on this medication. Within one week my skin was clearing and looking great--then I got severe hives. It started with some minor itching around my watch, shirt sleeves, underware band. The next morning I woke up so swollen I couldn't open my eyes. My face swelled so much my ears were recessed into the side of my head. I had swelling all over. I was told I had a relatively severe allergic reaction to the medication. I needed to take shots for several days and it took a couple of weeks for the swelling to completely go away. My reaction may have been this severe due to the many years of taking tetracycline. I can never take tetracycline or minocycline again. It was unfortunate because this really helped the acne. My face honestly didn't clear up much until my mid-30s. Hopefully this will clear his acne quickly without side effects. It won't hurt him to know the possible side effects to watch for. My problems occurred over a 24 hour period.
