Minne Marathon Team List

Updated!! :goodvibes

Looks like the decision has been made for the WISH meet. If we don't see you there, we'll see you at the start!!!

WISH MEET

PORT ORLEANS RIVERSIDE

FOOD COURT

SATURDAY 4:30

I'm so sad. :sad1: We have an ADR that conflicts with the meet. I just called to see if I could push it back a little bit, but the earliest they have is about 8pm and I think that is too late to eat right before the Minne.....especially at a steakhouse. I will be with you guys in spirit. I guess I'll have to wait until we're in the AK parking lot to meet up with the newbies.

We have a reservation at 6:10 at the Grand Floridian so we will have to leave early. I'm guessing the best way to get there is to take a bus to MK, then the boat over the GF??? Anyway, we'll have to leave pretty early from the meet to make it over there in time. Hopefully we'll at least get to meet a few new folks. We try to get there a few minutes early too! :)

Stacie

It's official-

I just signed up both me and Emma for the 5k. So now I'm doing the 5k and 15k. Just when you think you can control your medal desire, it sneaks up on you!

Jen in GA

Yay Jen!! It's gonna be so much fun!!

I don't think I will be able to make the meet. I have dinner at 5:30 in Epcot. I will see everyone before the races tho!!

Becky

I'll be at the WISH meet and being that I'm a newbie, I can't wait to meet people that I chat with online!! :cool1:

We have a reservation at 6:10 at the Grand Floridian

Hey girl!! You are heading over to my neck of the woods huh?? (We are staying at the Grand!) I am going to PM you my cell number, please feel free to call me when you get to the GF! I can't 100% promise i will be there when you are there Sat. night, as i might head over to Epcot, not sure what time i am heading over -- Hope we can catch up!! :goodvibes

Just a weather update:
Here in South Florida is was 82 degrees at 8:53 and with a feels like of 85.
In Orlando it is supposed to be 77 degrees with a feels like of 78 with humidity of 69%. at around 9:30am.

Hope this helps anyone who is training.

Take care WISHers!

I live in Palm Harbor, FL (near Tampa) and ran a 5K this morning! (averaged 13 ish minute/mile!!) It was a beautiful morning! If the weather is like this in a few weeks it will be a great race! For those of you who aren't used to the humidity, just be prepared to sweat buckets and drink your water!!

Thanks for all the weather updates guys- i'm dreading the humidity and heat. Over here it's 7oC max and windy right now! Oh well, have a week to get to used to it :rotfl:

I will def be heading to the meet as staying in POFQ i'll stroll over for 4.30. Being a complete newbie i'm so excited to be meeting people but also a little nervous!!! I'm surprisingly shy until i get to know ppl :upsidedow Also going to WWS expo for opening ish time on friday to get all the stuff and work out how on earth you attach these chip things :lmao: so maybe see some of you then?

I plan on being at the expo on Friday also. I will be driving up that morning and will probably stop there first before checking into the hotel, since it is on the way to ALL Star Sports.
... Oh, sorry I just read that packet pickup on Friday doesn't start until 12pm. It's 12pm-7pm on Friday.
I guess I will go and checkin first, head over to a park and then come back when it opens. I hope to have ADR at the SCI-FI for lunch and then leave there to go to the WWOS. There is a bus that goes there from Hollywood Studios.
Kate: Can't wait to meet a Brit!:) It's very easy to attach the chip thingy, they give you a thing to attach it to your laces which makes it very easy for them to remove it after the race. If you elect to tie it into your shoelace you have to be prepared to untie your laces after the race to remove it.:sad2:

Can someone explain to a total newbie what chips are? I am picturing these lil' round casino chips, lol.. but i am totally lost here.. I know they have to do with our timing, but how do they work??

They are a about the size of a big quarter and attach to your shoes by 2 little ties. You wont don't its even there. Just make sure to attach it well. I always put on night before as to not forget it. This happens sometimes with the morning rush.

A pic of the commerative ones(you can buy) is at http://disneyworldsports.disney.go....l?name=MarathonWeekendCommemorativeDetailPage . The ones they give you are not pretty like these.

For those of you who aren't used to the humidity, just be prepared to sweat buckets and drink your water!!

Remember not just water but electolyte drink. You sweat water and salts(electrolytes) and if you don't replenish both, you will have issues with stomach and head. Drinking too much plain water can be as bad as not drinking enough.

I found this:

http://www.chevronhoustonmarathon.c...pdf/2008+Half+Marathon+Final+Instructions.pdf

This is pretty much what our chip will look like. It will come in an envelope with instructions AND pictures on how to attach it! It will have a little zip tie to attach it to your shoe with. There are volunteers after the Finish who are waiting to cut the tie and take the chip. DO NOT USE YOUR LACES TO ATTACH THE CHIP!! If you do so and the volunteer is nice, he/she will untie your laces to get the chip, otherwise, he/she'll cut your laces! :scared1:

At the start, there will be a mat that stretches across the Start line, and there will be another one at the Finish line. When you cross the mat, you'll hear a "beep." That's your official start time, electronically recorded. Repeat at the Finish. The coolest thing to me is when hundreds of us are crossing the mat and all you hear is this long "beeeeeeeeeeeeeep!"

On some longer events, there may be more timing mats placed around the course. At the DL half and at WDW full they do it, and text your times back to friends and family. HTH! Anne

Thanks so much guys!! You learn something new everyday!! :) I wasn't sure if they would be checking us (i am only doing the 5k) at each mile marker? Or just beginning and end? IF it were just beginning and end, then how do they know if someone isn't doing the 15 min mile??

At some of the larger races they will have pads at various places to record your splits. During the full, WDW had it at the 5mile, 10 mile, halfway and 20 mile mark and if you click on your name on the results page you can bring up your splits. They also had one at the end of the out-n-back so you wouldn't be able to cheat, but I don't think that was one of the recorded splits. I only did it once so i don't remember very well. Maybe Robert would know. I don't recall any inside course timing mats at the Tower of Terror race last year, and would think that the Minnie may be similar....except maybe at the out-n-back again.
I always secure my chip with a bread-tie twisty in addition to the plastic string they give you. I make a big loop so the people at the end can cut it off easily. I've too many horror stories of people losing their chip with just the plastic tie to rely on it solely.

At the 5K's things are a little more laid back with the enforcement of timing. Yes, it's chip timed, but other than closing the Finish line, I don't see them "sweeping" anyone for falling a little below the 15 minute pace requirement. Since this race is advertised that you must maintain a 15 minute pace, the event planners are hoping that no one will sign up that can't do that. There will be mile markers with someone there calling out elapsed time at each mile. Remember, though, this is elapsed time from the GUN, not from when YOU crossed the start. At ToT and the WDW 5K, I didn't see a clock at the start so you could see how much time had elapsed from the gun. :( I had to wait until I got to the first mile and compare it with my Garmin time.

The 15K is a whole 'nother story. Just like the half and the full, there will be medics on bikes circling and checking on folks. There will be a medical tent at the half way point. There WILL be sweep points. The event people radio ahead when the final person crosses the start and the pace clock begins, so the sweep points know when to close the course, AND THEY WILL. The only exception, in previous years, was once you got to EPCOT, if you had slowed down, they shortened the course by heading you straight to the sphere and Finish line rather than letting you go around the World Showcase. In the past, there were only timing mats at the start and the finish at Minnie. HTH!! :goodvibes Anne

  This is getting really exciting for all us newbies! All your information is very helpful in calming fears, etc.

Okay, I just talk my friend into going next year....when can we sign up for the Minnie 2009?:cutie:

Well, Monica, my friend....we'll find out after we've been there IF there is going to be another one. Rumor has it that Minnie will be replaced with a Princess themed half...sorry:tiptoe:
