Minimun wage?

min wage is $9.65 in Nova Scotia and is suppose to go up to $10.00 on October 1st.

Wow, here in Ontario servers still get close to $9/hr I believe. Also like another poster suggested a low income family will get a child tax benifit every month, free or cheap daycare, geared to income housing if it is available ect. Still it must be a struggle for so many

Servers get less then min wage in Ontario??? I serve in N.S and don't get any less.

It's great that she owns her home. Most minimum wage earners don't, and won't on that pay scale. Also, I believe your mom isn't paying any income tax on that $13,000, so that's her net income? Someone earning minimum wage pays state and federal income taxes, and social security & Medicare. And rent. Yes, I'm sure your mom pays property taxes; on the other hand, while sure, she's technically a single parent now, she's not raising/supporting children on that small income.

And while it's absolutely NONE of our business, it's entirely possible she has savings, investments, retirement/pension, life insurance, annuity, help from her children, or any combination of these. Most single parents earning minimum wage don't have alternatives.

Well, they wouldn't really pay the income tax. At that wage, they'd most likely get the earned income credit. A single person would get $30 in EIC, and one with children would get $3,000-$5500 (all roughly rounded from 2010 tables.) In Oregon at least, they'd also get EIC on their state taxes as well.
