Do you guys have any experience with 'mini' laptops? I would like the positive and negative opinions.

Thanks.

I don't have one, but I have a friend who does. He mainly uses it to take notes at meetings. They are really nice and light weight. I am considering getting one to use when I'm writing. It would be so easy to take with me.

I have an ASUS Eee PC. It's tiny, including the keyboard which can make typing difficult sometimes. The screen is obviously small as well, but managable. It also doesn't have a CD drive. But it does have a hard drive and several USB ports. Mine came with Windows including Word Perfect, Excel, and others, as well as preloaded with Skype (it has a built in camera). I think it's a great little computer, very lightweight.

We do have regular computers as well, but this little computer is really good for traveling and such (taking it with you to appointments to use while waiting, etc.). It would fit easily in a medium sized bag or purse.

Hope that helps.

We have the same one and we use it for when we travel. No complaints yet. It's a lot easier to travel with than a regular size laptop.

Don't have one. But was watching HSN the other day and they had one as a TSV. They were flying out the door!!! If I was in the market for one, I would have considered purchasing it. For some reason, I can't get it to link, go to HSN.com and check out the Acer Aspire One.

I got mine yesterday from HSN. I ordered the TSV. I wanted the pink but ended up with the blue thinking DH would not want to use the pink one LOL

It was so easy to set up and came with a bunch of software.

I was thinking I would use it for work when I travel but its really to small for all the info I need when I work.

I may give it to my 14 yr old DD and just use it myself when we travel for fun.

My 15 yr old who has her own laptop said it was the cutest thing she ever saw and wanted to trade with me. After using it a bit she said she would keep her's LOL

I bought the Dell mini 9 with a 16GB SSD a couple weeks ago for $280 (plus tax/shipping) from their outlet thanks to a 20% off coupon, it was "previously ordered new" so basically I got a brand new netbook.

So far I love it, I need it mainly for traveling so I can easily get my email and connect to the office and it's going to be perfect for that. It starts up quickly, people consider the small solid state drive a drawback but honestly I haven't noticed that it's any slower than my full size laptop and I've had several webpages open at once, same with connecting to the terminal server at the office, I can work in all my applications and notice no difference as compared to when I'm connected using my laptop. Plus a solid state drive has no moving parts, unlike a hard drive, which is a plus IMO.

The only thing that takes a little getting used to is the keyboard, I'm used to it now with the exception of where they located the apostrophe key, I just can't get used to it's location!! (I think the HP keyboard layout is a little better than the Dell from what I've read).

Well, one of the things I'd be using for is to take notes in class, so that's what I looked into the mini ones. But I would also need to use it for all of my schools things (writing papers, doing my math homework, research, etc). Do you think it would be able to do all of these things without getting really slow?

Go to HSN.com and pull up the product, Acer Aspire One. Near the pic will be an option to view the video. It has alot of info on it.

One thing that HSN's has that Walmart's doesn't is a 6 cell battery and a web cam. Not sure if this is important enough for you to spend the extra money or not. But I sure would be interested in a longer life battery.

One thing the TSV presentation showed was how fast this little computer is. I was impressed. They had several different applications going and everything was moving along just fine.

I think it would be fine for taking notes in class, actually, probably really good for that since it's so small and all.

However, I think you will go crazy trying to write papers and do math homework on it. Additionally, in school, we had to use different software at times for projects, and it would be difficult to load software onto a machine with limited hard drive space, and no CD drive. If that's what you need a computer for, I would recommend getting an inexpensive regular sized laptop.

I ordered an HP from QVC several weeks ago. It was really nice although the screen was small. It was really fast enough for me but might bug someone else. It got really hot on the bottom. I mulled it over and returned it yesterday. I think I'll wait til any bugs are out of them and maybe the pric will drop a little more. I took it to FL and used it on the trip and it was lightweight and easy to carry around. I think you'd enjoy having one that size.

Yes, I have a lot of different software I have to load on to the computer. That's why I'm hesitant to buy on of these things because it just looks like it won't hold much.

It won't hold much. That reason alone I would get either a regular laptop or a desktop (which is less expensive, but less versatile than a laptop).

I'm assuming this is college, and I know in college, a laptop is almost a necessity now. I would definitely get a regular laptop if I were you. You don't necessarily need one with all the bells and whistles (you can get a cheap webcam rather than pay for an integrated one, you can expand memory down the road, you can add additional software later). But I would get one with the fastest processor and largest hard drive you can for the money you want to spend, then add the additional options later as you need them. Good luck! I personally like Dells, I know not everyone does, but I've had pretty good luck with them.

They are called NetBooks!

I am posting from my Acer Aspire One now. It has a 8 in screen. I use it for just posting & internet stuff.

Works great. Does what I need it to do.

ALSO...VERY VERY IMPORTANT.......You MUST get a Notebook with a Intel ATOM processor. THIS IS A MUST. Otherwise it will run pretty slow (I am a 30 year IT guy, I Know "some" things):firefight

Really if it dont have the ATOM processor STAY AWAY FROM IT. It will run very slow, and probably burn out in a year.

We have one in our household, and from what I've played around with it it's incredibly slow. I also love computers that I can personalize, and I don't think you can even choose a desktop image for it. It's great because it's so tiny, and incredibly portable though.

I paid a little more for the Samsung NC10 (about $500). It has a 10.2 inch screen and the keyboard is a little bigger allowing for more comfortable typing. The case, however, is the same size as the HP and Dell. It also has an 8 cell battery for longer battery life - the others come with a 6 cell battery I believe. It also has a 160 GB hard drive.

I LOVE my little netbook and use it every day.

ETA - I got it from buy.com - not tax and free shipping
