Mini laptops/Laptop suggestions.

I got the HP 2133 with some upgrades. (160gb HDD) and ram. Works great. the keyboard on that model is a little bigger than the other mini ones. still not full sized. it is GREAT for travel. I can load movies on before I go and DW likes it. It has built in WiFi and camera.

great travel laptop. I can also use it for presentations

We have one in our household, and from what I've played around with it it's incredibly slow. I also love computers that I can personalize, and I don't think you can even choose a desktop image for it. It's great because it's so tiny, and incredibly portable though.

If its running Windows you can. Some run Linux.

subbing.

Because I'm looking into getting one and I need feedback. I've been hauling my full size Presario back and forth with me and when I'm commuting via train than subway it's just getting too heavy. For simple web browsing and basic office function, I figure one would be okay.

The only thing that's concerning me is that everyone I've looked at has Window's XP on it. At this point I've actually become accustomed to working with Vista  Plus I have everything saved that I need to work with as Office 2007.

Maybe I should just hit Circuit City and see what they have left.

newegg has the sapphire acer without the dvd usb for $349

I've looked at these too, but decided against because the screen was too small for what I wanted to us it for. Too much scrolling left/right and up/down to see even a small spreadsheet.

I travelled with someone who had a regular size yet small laptop and it was able to fit into the rental car glove compartment when stepping out for a minute. Really nice.

ALSO...VERY VERY IMPORTANT.......You MUST get a Notebook with a Intel ATOM processor. THIS IS A MUST. Otherwise it will run pretty slow (I am a 30 year IT guy, I Know "some" things):firefight

Really if it dont have the ATOM processor STAY AWAY FROM IT. It will run very slow, and probably burn out in a year.

That is what the HSN kept pointing out. Said that the Atom processor is very fast and the one that you want.

It won't hold much. That reason alone I would get either a regular laptop or a desktop (which is less expensive, but less versatile than a laptop).

I'm assuming this is college, and I know in college, a laptop is almost a necessity now. I would definitely get a regular laptop if I were you. You don't necessarily need one with all the bells and whistles (you can get a cheap webcam rather than pay for an integrated one, you can expand memory down the road, you can add additional software later). But I would get one with the fastest processor and largest hard drive you can for the money you want to spend, then add the additional options later as you need them. Good luck! I personally like Dells, I know not everyone does, but I've had pretty good luck with them.
Thanks, and yes it is college. Any specific suggestions? Preferably something cheap.
They are called NetBooks!

I am posting from my Acer Aspire One now. It has a 8 in screen. I use it for just posting & internet stuff.

Works great. Does what I need it to do.

Thanks! I'm not very tech smart so I would've never known that.

The XP thing is something I've also noticed. I'm used to Vista now, but I guess I can't be too picky. I will be needing Microsoft Office on it because a lot of the files my professors email to me are from office.

And I definitely need one that will last me for a while, this is only my first year of college. I don't want to pay 400/500 dollars on something that will just fizzle out in a couple years.

I don't have any specific models to suggest, but I would go to the Dell site and customize a few just to check the prices (I have a Latitude D630 for work but I don't know how much they are since I didn't pay for it!). You may be able to get a student discount through them (check with your school). The nice thing about the Dell site is that you can really get an idea of how much each component or upgrade will cost, with the way they have the site set up. However, then I would definitely do some comparison shopping once you figure out what features/components you really want and need. Newegg.com and tigerdirect.com might have some good deals (so says my computer programmer husband).

I only say Dell because that's what I've always gotten, but it's either been because I got a good deal on them through a discount at work (for my personal computer), or because work bought it for me (for work).

There are a ton of other brands out there that are good deals. I know someone with a Lenovo that they are happy with. I'm sure other people will have more suggestions; unfortunately, other than the Eee PC, I don't have experience with anything other than Dell.
