I didn't want to start up the old thread again, but I got my tickets and here's my experience at DTD Guest Relations.
I got my free 5-day ticket with all the bells and whistles. Jim, your pink ID will work fine. Every service member, active, retired or reserve component is eligible for one. I think non-retired reserve component need to show activation orders to get theirs, but I'm not sure about that.
My experience with companion tickets was:
I was able to buy a 5-day hopper for my wife for $124 plus tax and have the ticket activated.
I was able to buy two 5-day hoppers for $124 each plus tax for friends who are coming down in October and I was able to activate the tickets. Neither one of them was present. I had to provide birth dates for each of them.
I was able to buy an additional 5-day companion ticket for myself to use in October. That ticket was also activated and I used one day on this trip.
I was told the following:
Each service is allowed to get one free ticket and up to five companion tickets (more under very special circumstances where familys are larger than five people). They do not require all people to be present to activate them. This mirrors other people's experience. The CM at Guest Relations didn't know what I was talking about when I asked if people had to be present to activate the tickets. That might not always be the case, but I specifically asked and was told no.
There was no hassle what-so-ever. Each ticket has the individual's name on it and says that an ID is required.
That's how it worked for me. A great deal. Thanks Disney
