Military brats! Check in here!

Navy brat here ( although I'll NEVER understand that term "brat" used for military kids! We could never get away with ANYTHING!!) My dad served in the Navy. He lied about his age in order to join! Told them he was 18, when he was only 16. I was born in Oakland Ca.(1959) But I have 2 brothers that were born in San Diego (1953-55), a sister that was born in Oahu, Hawaii. After I was born I had other sibilings born in Virginia Beach, VA., Omaha Nebraska (SAC), Norfolk Va. and Baltimore Md., where my dad worked at the Pentagon. He was Naval Intelligence and CIA for a good portion of his military life. While our family was never required to live overseas- my dad sure was gone.... a lot!

Belle1962- my dad was at Aberdeen too- late 60's early 70's. When where you there?

My dad was in the Marine Corps for 23 years and retired as Captain due to medical disability.

I was born in Camp Lejeune, NC, lived there for two weeks, then moved to the Keys in Florida for three years before he retired from there and we moved to Atlanta.

Nowhere exotic for me either but that's okay, loved the Keys.

Although I wasn't a military "brat", my DS was as my DH was in the Navy, he recently retired after 20 years. DS spent over half his life (5-1/2 years) growing up in Italy and he has some wonderful memories that I am sure he will appreciate as he gets older.

Dad (whom I just recently lost - Miss you Dad)
Navy

Orlando at Mccoy(?)
Tennessee
Alameda, Ca
Norfolk, Va

Then my dad retired and worked with the military on F/A - 18 aircraft.
I think we moved even more then! All this within
St. Louis
Pt Mugu, Ca
Japan - with a brief time in Yechon S. Korea
El Toro, Ca

I am sure I am missing some! LOL

I'll chime in for DH. His dad was a Marine and Purple-heart Vietnam Vet, who retired after 20-some years as a Sergeant Major. DH was born in Subic Bay, Philippines, then moved to Pearl Harbor where his younger brother was born, then moved to Great Lakes where he grew up and eventually met me!

DH is now in the Navy, and his dad was very very proud of him. He died in '02 and was given a military burial.

Dad & Mom were in the Navy--they divorced and my mother remarried 3 times while I was at home and they were all Navy as well.

Meridian, MS--born...mom joined service--they later divorced and I lived with her.

Jax NAS--until 3/4

Columbia, SC--until 4/5

Charleston, SC--1st grade, Knightsville Elem. We lived in Summerville.

Willow Grove NAS (PA)--2nd-the start of 5th grade Cold Spring Elem/John M. Grasse Elementary

Charleston Naval Shipyard (SC)--moved lots of times in the same area....Ladson, N. Charleston, Goose Creek
5th--9th grade
Rollings Elem/Alston Middle/Oakbrook Middle/College Park Middle/Stratford High School

New Orleans, LA (Algiers Point--the base right there-we lived in that neighborhood after parents bought a house and then remodeled it on This Old House)
10th/11th grade
Franklin High School

Mayport (we lived in Ponte Vedra)
12th grade
Nease High School

Mom was medically discharged just short of being qualified for medical retirement. She has just finally been given 100% disability from the VA--about 7-9 years later.

Well, Dad actually started in the Navy back in 1952...hated sleeping on ship so he switched to the AF to work on airplanes...he met President Johnson when Air Force One stopped at a base Dad was at...he worked on it. Our family never traveled with Dad...he married a "pre-made" family when he married my mom...she had 3 daughters from her first marriage. (I came along after a Christmas leave Dad made it home for...) Many years after Dad retired (1972) we all found out that Dad wanted us to travel, but thought Mom and my sisters (stupid girls) didn't want to travel and leave their friends...and then Mom thought Dad didn't want the family to travel so she and the 3 girls stayed put...typical military snafu! So, I grew up in the same small town never experiencing the world open to a military brat. Of course, after Dad and Mom married, he did most of his tours in Southeast Asia...not a great place for family during the Vietnam War.

My sis #3 married a career AF guy...I did get to travel with them! I stayed one summer with then while he was in school in Denver and spent an entire year with them as their nanny while they were stationed in the Netherlands. Whoa! That was too much fun for a just turned 19 year old...

Then my first husband was in the Navy...we were in Pensacola FL and Sabana Seca, Puerto Rico until I left him. DS was born in Pensacola.

And for the AF brat who couldn't remember the base in Illinois...might have been Scott Air Force Base, near St. Louis MO? Or Chanute near Rantoul IL...the second one has been closed for many years, but SAFB is still going strong...it's always been our home base since that is the one Mom always took us to as kids...I still go with Dad , now that I'm his agent because he's had some health issues that he needs assistance.

Navy brat here. Lived in a lot of the same places you did DVC Kathy even though you were Marine Corps.
Dad was a navy doctor, so he may have delivered your brothers karebear1.
My parents were first stationed in Greece, then on to San Diego, California, then to Chi Chi Jima, back to San Diego California, then Baltimore (early 60s), then Deptford Township, New Jersey, then Guam(late 60s, early 70s). After Guam, we headed to Quantico and dad retired there in 1974. He went to work at the Indian Health Services Hospital in New Mexico after that.
It was quite an interesting life, that's for sure. The schools were wonderful.
We could never get away with anything either. I still remember getting in trouble for what my parents "heard about".

Dad is retired AF:
Born at Plattsburgh AFB, NY
Moved to Japan for four years
MacGuire AFB, NJ
Castle AFB, CA
Oxnard AFB, CA
Camarillo, CA (while dad was in Vietnam)
Beale AFB, CA

DH is also retired AF. :goodvibes

I wasn't one, but my DH was and I felt compelled to post to this thread.

Both of his parents served in the Army, which is where they met, but his mom retired after he was born. His dad served 26 years, and has 7 purple hearts.

He was born on the Presidio in San Francisco and lived there for about a month. Then they moved to some tiny town in Germany. Lunchmomd mentioned Heidelburg - I think that may have been it.

From there they went to Bosque Farms, New Mexico and then on to Albequerque.

From there he moved to Alva, Florida and then to Cape Coral.

Following that, his parents divorced and he moved here when he was 12 (which is when we met).

He did some time in other countries and states, but that's all he can remember.

He really hated it. He told me that when he was younger, he thought his father hated him because as soon as he made a friend, his dad would say they were moving again. :( Because of that, he's told me that we are to absolutely settle down somewhere before having kids, he refuses to move EVER again once we start a family. He doesn't want to put them through it.

Dad was in the Airforce and I was born in Ramstein Germany.

The rest of the family is Navy and I was working toward being a pilot myself untill asthma kept me from joining the Navy. Now I just design guided munitions for General Dynamics.

Aloha

Steve

Another military brat checking in! :wave2:

Both my parents were in the Air Force. They met in basic training. Mom quit when my brother was born when I was 2.5. Dad took early retirement after the Gulf War when they were making so many military cuts.

Stationed in:

Ellsworth AFB, SD (where my brother and I were both born)

Hey, when were you guys at Ellsworth? I actually miss it there.

Another Navy brat ! My DDad was a Seabee for 24 years, retired in 1976.

Point Mugu CA ( till 1 yo)
Port Hueneme CA ( 1-4 yo)
Great Lakes IL (K-1st)
Port Hueneme CA (2nd-4th) with Dad gone for a lovely 3 years in South East Asia
Pearl Harbor HI (5th -8th) and Dad retired there while on the Admiral's staff at SeabeePAC

of course we had "micro" moves to different housing during some of the tours.

BTW I have never heard of "Oxnard AFB".........did you mean Point Mugu NAS?

My dad was Air Force - 22 yrs. We lived in Germany (Rhein Main and Ramstein), Dover AFB Delaware, Columbus, Ohio, Randolph AFB in San Antonio, TX, and Clark AFB in the Philippines. I started school in a foreign country and graduated 12 years later in another foreign country. I never was at any one school longer than 3 1/2 yrs, but I don't remember it negatively because someone was always moving - either new kids moving in, or old friends moving away. The hardest year was the one we spent in the States while my dad was in Turkey (no families allowed). The kids in the States where we stayed were not from military backgrounds, and not accustomed to welcoming new friends into their already established groups - not an easy time for a middle schooler.

Dad still has the travel bug - he just got back from Prague yesterday, and he generally takes 1-2 big trips like that per year. What a great appreciation for other cultures he has, and he made sure we saw as much as possible when we lived overseas. While we sometimes complained about being dragged away from our neighborhood friends to go see another castle or cathedral, in retrospect, we sure were lucky!! :Pinkbounc

What a great thread Rick! Who knew there were so many of us on the DIS?

I am a PROUD Navy brat....born and lived in Rota Spain for 4 years
- then Pensacola, Florida for 4 years
- then San Diego for 3 years
- Brooklyn, NY for 5 years (Pop retired Navy and became a cop here, and then decided he wanted to live to tell the tale, so....)
- Back to Pensacola where they still live

Meanwhile....I married Navy (glutton for punishment and Krispy Kremes) and have lived:
- San Diego for 5 years
- Biloxi for 3 years
- Pensacola for 2 years
- Germany next year....

I enjoy the moves and the adventures, but with the kids it's getting hard. I worry that with all these moves I'll be asked to fly to Chicago in 10 years for a "makeover" and be the surprised guest on a talk show featuring the ten worst parents in America....

Ummmm...go Navy!!! :teeth:

My Dad was in the Air Force for 22 years. He is retired now. Here is are the places we were stationed:

Travis AFB in California 1976-1980
Iraklion AFB in Crete, Greece 1980-1984
Barksdale AFB in Bossier, Louisiana 1985-1991

We moved back to Ky with family while my Dad finished up his duty in Turkey and Texas. I never liked moving around and leaving friends until I talked to people I know now and find out they have never left this state. I find that unreal. Now I really appreciate the experiences I have had.

AF brat.

Florida (although my dad was in Thailand during Vietnam War)
Nevada
DC where he retired and the moving continued on with WA, SC and VA.

My son is a Navy brat

VA
Naples, Italy (currently)
