Miley Cyrus... why?

What would you do if your 15 yr. old appeared like that on front of a cover?
Dang she makes enough money w/out having to shoot nude scenes.

First of all, she wasn't nude. ;) Just want to make sure that is understood.

second , i would actually say that if that were my 15 yr old - i would think it is a beautiful photo, in an artistic way - the way it was meant. and i would be proud of my daughter -because - I know my dd is a GOOD PERSON, and strong in her faith. And, I believe Miley should be given that consideration as well, it's a photo of her with a sheet -- that's it. It is being taken WAY too overblown, And it was MEANT to be a "glamorous" shot -- even if that is what we may agree or not agree was the outcome of it, ;) i believe that was the intentions.
And BTW, it's NOT on the front cover. ;)

short excerpt:

LOS ANGELES — Fifteen years old, topless and wrapped in what appears to be a satin bedsheet in the June issue of Vanity Fair. Did Miley Cyrus, with the help of a controversy-courting magazine, just deliver a blow to the Walt Disney Company’s billion-dollar “Hannah Montana” franchise?
No. Disney doesn't care. They already have one star who took a NAKED picture of herself and sent it to someone that was circulated. They were fine with that.

This one isn't even naked.

Disney seems to be THE company to work for if you are a teenage girl who likes to pose in the nude.

...What the photo IS is yet another step in our society toward normalizing sex with children. Inexcusable. Shame on whoever steered the child into this.

I couldn't possibly agree MORE!:thumbsup2

I've seen some on this thread mistaking the photo with Miley being a good role model. This has nothing to do with being a role model. It has everything to do with a 15 year old girl posing seductively. Someone pointed out the Brooke Shields did it too (many years ago). Just because Brooke did it, doesn't make THAT instance right either. :sad2:

It is our job to steer young girl's into a good role model, not one at 15 that would take their clothes off, for what reasons we will never know!!!!!!!!!

AGAIN, her clothes were NOT off. ;)

I would argue that it would be your job to actually be a good role model, rather than putting that off on someone else.

No laws were broken. If you don't like it, then it is your job to explain to your kid why you feel it is not acceptable. Believe it or not, there are a lot of folks out there that will completely disagree with you though.

I think it was a mistake for her to participate in the picture. I think it is a bigger mistake for people to get all up in arms about it, saying it is a bad example to my kid. If it is a bad example, then use it as such, then something positive can come out of it.

Come on.. are we really going to say she is not a good kid anymore from ONE incident??? I would hate to be the one to judge like that! That's just not fair.

No no, I am not saying she is no longer a good kid (I think she is a great kid for what she is up against) I think she is a good kid that was VERY manipulated by adults with dollar signs in their eyes. (It seems like whenever there is something good - bad people want to soil it a bit).

I just think that I need to be clear with my daughter what we want to emulate. I don't want her to emmulate anything like that photoshoot, that is not what makes you agrown up or famous.

Yes they were, but she was mostly covered by a sheet. ( at least her top )....

Yes, the article in people said she had been wearing a flesh colored tank top, and was asked to remove it for that shot. She is topless and holding a sheet. And even if there is something under that sheet, it was done to give the illusion that she is topless and that is the problem.

What I don't understand is why wasn't there this kind of outrage over that daughter-dancing-suggestively-with-father show. :confused3 There's no way the parent didn't know what was going on when that video was taken.

What show are you talking about???

I'm just tired of living in a time that sexualizes our children. I think 15 is too young to be acting so sexy in public. She has her whole life ahead of her, to be and act like an adult. I wish our children would hang onto their childhoods a bit longer is all.

I must be missing something. I went to VanityFair's website and scrolled through all the pictures, I think?! The only picture I saw with skin had Miley fairly well wrapped in a blanket/sheet. You couldn't tell if there was anything under it or not and all you saw was her shoulder and half of her back. Seriously, unless I missed something, my 9 yr old has more skin showing when she wears her bathing suit...and I'm very conservative on what she can wear (no butt writing, no tummy shirts etc). Was there a picture that I didn't see?

I actually don't mind my girls watching Hannah Montana and/or listening to Miley's music. Her lyrics are clean enough and even have a good message (I'm unusual, not so typical, way too smart to be waiting around)...not a bad idea instead of suggesting you change yourself for some guy and drape yourself all over him. Her friend on the show, Emily Osmont, I like her lyrics too (got my own plan..got my own way..I don't care what people say). The song reminds me of my 9 yr old..thankfully she doesn't care what's cool or uncool. She is happy to do/wear whatever she likes and doesn't worry about how popular it makes her.

Anyway..my kids like the show and the music but they're not obsessed. I didin't have a problem with it before the shoot, and unless I missed a picture, I still don't. My 9yr old won't be reading Vanity Fair anytime soon, anyway. She'll never even know about the photo shoot unless the blasted media flashes it up everywhere...not that she watches the news either, but I'm sure kids at school will know about it.

Credit yourself for that, at least to some extent.

That's a mind-blowingly great point.

She'll never even know about the photo shoot unless the blasted media flashes it up everywhere...
Which is much more likely the more adults blow it out of proportion.
