But they can be. It's not so much their acting persona that's being touted as role model material, that would be stupid, it's how they conduct themselves outside of it and how they deal with the pressures of stardom and being in the limelight.

Ok, I can agree with this. (shocking) Of course I (and I assume others on this thread)don't teach our children that entertainers and actors are role models. I would rather my daughter have a Mother Teresa or a Condaleeeza Rice poster on her wall then a Hannah Montana Poster (I know that one bothers you Bicker... )But, guess what? she's a kid and that ain't happening. So if she wants to hang a poster of someone her wall that is in the entertainment industry, it was ok that it was Miley, because Miley was a good kid (from all that I had seen until now). But now, I'd have to rethink it. I don't want to condone anything that some entertainers stand for by letting my daughter hand their picture on her wall.

Funny, the same people who are saying why would we point to actors as rold models for our kids, probably think Angelina Jolie is a saint that is doing such good in the world.

I havent read all of this thread, and the Cyrus(s) all have baggage on this one, and the spin control IS being handled correctly (prompt, clear remorse, apologies, etc, etc...)..

BUT..

Why is noone taking Annie Leibowitz to task for creating the comfort level with this young girl (i.e. making her feel like... its OK, its just ....art....)

The pedigree that Annie Leib has is pretty persuasive to a young, ambitious (rising) media star...

That's the message: If parents have any say in their child's life (and they surely do, to start), it should include who the children idolize, and parents should vet the candidates, not based on how they seem on the surface. What has Miley Cyrus ever done to qualify her as a valid alternative to Condalezza Rice?

Yep, thats the bottom line. It doesn't matter if people think it should be ignored or not ignored, if she should be a role model or not a role model....that picture is just not right.

I know that at 15 many girls could be persueded into that pic, with all sorts of talk of "art" and wanting to be a grown up. Annie L. has NO shame, Vanity fair was looking for the contraversy, and Mom and Dad should NEVER leave their daughter alone (they said they had left the set when that pic was taken). What photographer would take that pic without her parents there?
They said her handlers were there, sorry not good enough. Unless her handlers are her court appointed gaurdians.

I did google the pictures and found a site that had behind the scenes footage. I have to admit that when I saw the behind the scene pics everything looked very G-rated.

My daughter is another HUGE Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus fan. She is also 10 years old. I can promise you that she never will look into a Vanity Fair Magazine without me seeing it first. I would hope that if she did see them we would talk about what is appropriate for a 15 year girl. Thank goodness Miley wasnt out taking nude photos and sending them to some boy via the internet. (V. I want to be my daughters role model first, I hope she feels the same.

I think that Annie L. is the one who needs to be taking responsibility on this one. Miley is 15 while Annie is the adult who is supposed to know what is and isn't appropriate for photographs of a person who is still a minor.

Having said that, I am again humored by the uproar this causes. She is a 15 year old girl who is immensely popular and having to go through the puberty years (a time when we all made mistakes) in the public eye. I'm not bothered by any of the pictures that have been made public whether intentionally (Vanity Fair) or the others that should have never been made public. When I see some of the other celebrities that some kids are fans of, I'm still glad my girls choose Miley as a star they admire. We talk about some of the mistakes in decisions she and others have made and go from there.

My girls have TONS of posters all over their rooms. However, they are all of Disney channel stars with the majority being of the Jonas Brothers. I support the girls in their adoration of those boys. They are real role models that our youth can look up to as examples of how to accept the fame and do great things with it. As for Miley, she's a good girl from a good family, and if my girls continue to look up to her, so be it. It's not the worst thing that can happen life.

when ever someone is naked and wrapped in a bedsheet, and giving a "come hither" look at the camera, it is suggesting ONE thing. Duh! This girl is 15.

I sooo agree!!! Flame me if you will... but I get SO sick of perversion being excused in the name of 'art'. the remains of aborted babies, and naked children in seductive poses, etc... are not excusable in the name of 'art'.

While I do find the photo to be semi-artistic... Yes, IMHO, it does cross the boundary. Some people just have NO boundaries whatsoever...

Remember, we are not talking about just any teenager in a questionable photo... We are talking about a Disney 'Family Channel' starlet, who has millions of young girls who are watching. NOT OKAY.

As far as 'growing up'... so, what... posing for this type of a thing is mandated??? It must be done by any child who is growing up??? Ummm, yeah right...

Remember, 'Hannah Montana' is not a part of Miley's childhood past... It is a here and now...
She is STILL currently a child who is starring in a 'family' show.

I don't think she will . I think it's easy for most people to jump on her, but none of us where there -- none of us know exactly what was said/done or whatnot.. so, i think we need to remember, she is a teen, and that she deserves some credit for acknowledging what she did wasn't the best idea, and let her move on -- no need to drag this issue thru the mud and back again.
I still believe that she is a good kid, with her head on straight, and strong in her faith.
