Miley Cyrus concert dissapointment

OP here, First off neither I nor my husband bought the tickets for this show. It was a gift to dd from her aunt. My sister bought the tickets during the per-sale for American Exp. Card holders. An opening act had not been announced yet. Had it and she had known it was Metro Station she would not have bought the tickets. By the time it was announced. Dd had already been told she was going.

I DO research what my kids watch, listen to and read. I had heard from others who saw Miley that she did sing a few Hannah songs but not dressed up. My daughter was not one crying it was kids we saw as we were leaving.
I have to admit here new song was beautiful. At one point in her concert she brought out a group of cheerleaders called the Sparkles. These were like high school age girls who had taught cheerleading to special needs students. During this part Miley sang Climb. It was amazing and brought tears to my eyes. She has a new movie coming out that looks very good.

Miley made the choice to start her career focusing on young girls.. Regardless of if she is trying to shed her currant image for a new one. She should remember she is a role model for many kids. If not for these kids she would just be Billy Ray’s daughter. She is responsible for what is done on her tour. I am not saying she is the demon child or anything.

My whole point was to let other Moms know what we saw. I appreciate it when I come to DIS board and other Mom’s have expressed their opinions about something.

I quite understand both sides of the story reflected in the above posts. It is unfortunate though that as my DGD (7) who was perhaps the biggest MILEY fan out there put it when she saw her latest video--"Gigi, she looks like a hoochie" I think she's just about over her and I am for one am glad. (to be honest I never thought she could sing, act, etc anyway, just fantastic marketing) Sorry, didn't mean to Miley bash, just wish her decisions were different, you can move on to a more adult fan base without trashing it up! (unless maybe that's the next marketing gimmick) hmmmmmmmmm :sad2:

I totally agree with this. It is the parents responsibility to check out these things first. I'm sure you could have went online and read reviews of her concert and even looked up her set list to find out there are no Hannah songs. It literally just took me about 5 seconds to google "Miley Cyrus set list 2009" to get a list of songs. As others have said she is touring as Miley - not Hannah as others have said. Not sure why people are upset there are no Hannah Montanna songs? You could have easily known this BEFORE going. And for not being able to research the clothing and dancing - just turn on MTV and watch videos on TRL....they are geared to teens which is the same as Miley is. It's not that hard to figure out if Miley is marketed to teens then the clothing and dancing are also going to be marketed to teens. Also, with Metro Station - another thing that could have been researched. Why take your child into a situation that you assume is going to be appropriate for a 9 yr old? It's the parents own fault these things happened - don't criticize the artists for the clothing and music that are obviously geard towards the teen and older crowds. Do the research and if you don't like what they are offering - don't go! It really is very simple.

I just went back and reread this and realized it sounds really rude and I don't mean to come off that way. I think this is just one of those things that really bugs me and I can't help speaking up. I just feel like the parent is 100% in control of this situation and the only one they can blame is themselves.

Sorry OP, hopefully you can just use this as a learning experience for next time!

I don't think criticism is bad though...it lets the artist know the thoughts of his/her fans and in Miley's case, the thoughts of her fans' parents. At this point, Miley's fans' parents are still important to her success. She knows that teenagers and adults are not attending her concerts unless they have a young girl in hand, but she puts on a show for teenagers and adults anyways. If Miley is going to ignore who is truly in her audience, then she has to know that she is going to receive some criticism.

Miley was much younger herself when she started out. But she has gotten older, so it is not a leap to think that some of her fan base has as well. You can't sing for 9yr olds forever. After a while it just seems wierd.

She was touring as Miley Cyrus, not as Hannah Montanna. It sounds like some asumptions were made that it would be a Hannah style concert. That is not Miley's fault.

I wanted to give my point of view from a 16 year olds perspective. As many posters have stated, they believe that Miley has a fanbase of younger girls and is trying to change this fan base by moving up to the teenage crowd. What I wanted to point out was she is not 'changing her fan base' she is simply making a name for herself. 'Hannah Montana' is a character with her own fan base in the 6-12 category. Miley Cyrus has begun to debut her music with her own fan base in the teen category, which would probably be ages 15/16 and up. Granted Hannah Montana is played by actress Miley Cyrus, but they are still two seperate 'people' with two seperate fan bases. If anyone went to the Hannah Montana concert back in 2007 it was completely sponsored by Disney, but featured Miley Cyrus, based on her cd Hannah Montana: Meet Miley Cyrus that came out that year. Miley was able to use this as a jump on developing her own name, not just Hannah Montana. During the Hannah Montana concert, she did sing Hannah Montana songs and wore her Hannah wig and outfits as seen in the show. Halfway through the concert she took off her Hannah wig and began to sing songs as Miley Cyrus. I would like to point out that the outfits she wore and the songs she sang were appropriate for the concert target age level, ages 6-10. The concert was geared towards Hannah/Miley and thats what the audience got. Now when it comes to the Miley Cyrus concert, this displayed projects done on her own account, with her own name. It has no relation to Hannah Montana what so ever, so it shouldn't be assumed that when you go to a concert with Miley Cyrus that she would sing Hannah Montana songs, even in her 'Miley' outfit, as a PP stated with the Amy Adams metaphor. During the concert, the Metro Station band opened for her as stated. As a 16 year old, and someone who just knows the name of the band, I wasn't surprised or shocked at the song lyrics. At the concert I was at, no one took their shirt off and actually it was rather hard to hear what the lyrics were saying, I wasn't able to pull out "girl take your shirt off either". But, I knew Metro Station was going to be there, and regardless the lyrics did not affect me as a 16 year old who is on the younger side of the spectrum of the targeted audience. As a side note, many younger girls attending the concert did come in after Metro Station was done, before Miley came on. Once Miley began to perform, I didn't notice anything to be shocking either. Her song lyrics were appropriate, even to a younger crowd. Her outfits were appropriate, but to the crowd that the concert was geared toward. I wouldn't wear something like that to my 8 year old cousin's birthday party, but to Homecoming or a party I would. I know many parents oversee what their teens where, as well as mine, but the styles of today are what they are. Short shorts or a short dress or anything of that nature are how the majority of teens dress today. Miley was wearing appropriate clothing for the teenage group, but I could see that a parent of a 6 year old would be shocked. Times have changed over the years with the media and other 'not so great' influences, but things are the way they are. I don't particularly agree with some outragous outfits I see, but even I dress relatively the same way as it is all about fitting in and going with the flow during your teenage years.
Sorry for the long post, but I am a big defender in Miley's situation. She has been bashed left and right for the 'things' she has done over the past year or so, but as a 17 year old in the United States, it is not out of the ordinary.
As for the OP - I agree what you say by being a role model for kids, but as a teenager it is hard to filter what kids see and don't see, and even if she didn't make her Miley Cyrus debut, she was still criticized for things she did.

And I know that she knows her fan base is still the Hannah Montana crowd

:

Hey, you know her personally? That's cool!

I'm just amazed that parents are taking their kids to any type of concert - since when did the concert experience become a kid thing? I mean, if you need your parents to go with you as a chaperone, then maybe you're not old enough for a concert yet?

Why is this so amazing? You don't think kids should go to any concert? My daughter and I enjoy going to concerts together.

As for the Miley/Hannah thing. I took my daughter to see Hannah in concert when she was 8. Although she has become a fan of Miley's music, I would not take her to her concert. I don't think Miley has been a very good role model for the younger kids lately. Just my opinion.

MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY

It's not about the art. It's not about the musicianship.

She's trying to gain wider appeal, and her production company could give a rat's backside about who is offended as long as the tickets sell.

I'd rather my 6 year old attend an Allman Brothers show. At least there is good music, artfully performed, and you know what to expect.

We had Madonna when I was in young, and she was risque, but she was an adult. When you have children acting like Madonna did as an adult, it's gross.

i just realized how old i sound. lol

did we have child superstars when we (30 and overs) young? i know michael jackson was a child star, but his music appealed to adults. there were family groups like the osmonds, but were there ever any full-on child stars?

the kids today have a handful of these child stars to choose from. i'm thinking it's just a bad idea overall. i think we should let them listen to music that is appropriate or way over their heads.

i remember sing "lay down sally" when i was little. my dad never corrected me when i sang "lay down salad" instead. for some reason... this just seems more appropriate than anything miley or hannah could do. with child stars, there is a line drawn and too much temptation to ride that line.

I totally agree..especially when I read of really little kids, like 5 and 6. Concerts? Blows my mind. But, well, to each his own.

We took our daughter with us to see Jack Johnson when she was 4. She loves his music and it was at an outdoor venue. We went with a bunch of family members and had a blast! :)

i have no problems with kids attending concerts as long as they aren't in danger. i wouldn't take my kid to a show where there are mosh pits, for example.

jack johnson? how much more relaxed can a show be?

this is what i mean about taking kids to adult shows. even if the lyrics suggest some things.. at least they're coming from an adult and will more than likely go over a kid's head. when children like miley cyrus say/do suggestive things, then it's way more inappropriate and uncomfortable. no matter what people think.. she's still a child.

:confused3 I think it all started with Miley's Hannah Montana character ...because who else other than children would want to go to a Hannah Montana concert!

Why do people think that Miley, other singers, actors or what have you, are role models? Seriously. This wasn't a "Hannah Montana "or "Barney" concert, Miley is a teenager.

I don't know why anyone is surprised - her days as Hannah are very numbered, she's almost an adult, and she's got a VERY small window to find a new fan-base. She's targeting teens - people her age. When I was in HS, I went to a lot of concerts - yes, some lyrics and clothing was pretty extreme ("we've got the biggest, balls of them all!" - gotta love AC/DC).

Children and tweens are not her target audience - stop taking them to these concerts!

What she said.:thumbsup2

My parents never took me to a concert until I was 12 years old - we saw the Osmonds. I was one of the youngest people there. Never would have gone as a 5-11 year old - would have put me way over my bedtime, weekday or weekend!

When parents decide to bring their young children to concerts, they are making the choice to expose them to the risk of a more adult entertainment situation, even if the singer is in her teens. Why would a parent even want their 8 year old child to be seeing someone twice that age, and on the brink of adulthood, in concert?

The shows/concerts I go to aren't like this. I would not go to one of these shows, personally... and that includes a Hannah Montana, meant for kids, show. As long as you're not taking your kids into a dangerous situation, I see nothing wrong with taking them to concerts... especially outdoor ones.

For example.. I love Steely Dan. This would be a concert that I'd totally take my kid to. They have some suggestive lyrics, but they're poetic and it would go over my kid's head.

I do know that while I love Ryan Adams, and my DD is welcome to listen to most of his songs, there are a few that she shouldn't hear. In concert, while he puts on an awesome show, he likes to drop the F-bomb on occasion. This would make me uncomfortable with my kid being there. She does love Ryan Adams, though. :)

I'd totally take my kid to a Crosby, Stills and Nash show.... or Jack Johnson, like Pbiddy mentioned.

Concerts aren't the problem. It's the performer that is or isn't.
