MIL needs biopsy

MIL (early 70's) went in for her yearly mammo... and has been getting all sorts of tests ever since. Now, they say she needs a needle biopsy next week to know for sure what it is. They never really told her much about the other tests. Is this normal procedure when they cant see something, or is this done before they tell you for sure you have BC? She is a nervous wreck...

I would guess it would depend on what else she had done. My mom had a needle biopsy after her mammo and ultrasound and it was determined to be cancer. It took them 5 days to read the biopsy. She had her mastecomy a year ago and had been cancer free so far. She is now 81. Good luck. It is very stressful

I think that is just standard procedure. My mother had the needle biopsy and I went with her. We thought it would be a piece of cake. NOT. It was awful. She vomited while they were doing it and aspirated the vomit. After she recovered I drove her home and she had a miagraine for the next few days.

I hope you don't find me a Debbie Downer. I am sure you Mom won't react as violently as mine....but don't think it is a walk in the park. BTW, my mother had a rating of 4 on the Birads scale, and it wasn't cancer.

It it pretty standard. I had one a few months ago after my mamo and ultra sound found somethings. It wasn't the worst thing I had ever had. I went alone and went back to work afterwards.

Mine was OK, but I do need to go back every 6 months for a ultra sound.

They just had me lie down and they used the ultra sound machine to find the lumps and then used almost like a little staple gun to do the biopsy. It was more uncomfortable than painful. I also had a unterine biopsy done this year, so I am becoming an old pro at these things.

Try to keep her calm until the test comes back and remember most are negative. I had a needle biopsy several years ago, it wasn't too bad.

She wont talk to me much about it. I lost my 46 year old brother a few years ago to several cancers... and I cant begin to say how hard it was to watch him. It changed me forever, and she knows that. I think I am "off limits" still. You know what I mean?

Powellrj, pretty much sounds like my experience. I had one last year and it wasn't so bad. I took 1/2 a valium because I was anxious, but they numbed me first and I didn't feel a thing. They ended up doing a MRI to be sure it was okay, and it was.

I will say some prayers for your MIL.

I had a needle biopsy done a few years ago. They had me laying face down on a bed with two hole for the girls. The girls sat in the holes and they did a mamo. During the mamo, the doctors gave me shots around the area so I would not feel a thing and then they began to cut me. After the cut the stuck a needle in the breast and used the mamo. for guidance. It wasn't that bad. I think the table was the worst part due to it being so uncomfortable.

There is only one way to know with absolute certainty what an abnormality discovered on a test is, and that's to study the tissue. A biopsy takes tissue samples for a pathologist to study and identify. Many of them come out negative for cancer, so hold onto that thought.

MIL's test results are in, but they are making her go to the doctors office tomorrow to get the results. They wont tell her over the phone.

I'm sorry. My 75yr old mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in Jan. 08. She had a mastectomy on Feb. 14th and the other March 20th. She has done remarkably well with her surgery and her chemo. As of now she is in remission. Hope all goes as smoothly for your MIL.
