might not happen but always leary

I have rented points before and never had a problem but I am now thinking of the "what if's".
I am about to rent some points to someone who although they seem interested I just get a strange vibe. I have gotten quite a few emails from them prior to this saying maybe yes, maybe no. Now they say yes.
If I call and make the ressies for them and they cancel I can put the points in holding if they give me enough time, so that is not going to hurt much. I will just have to either use them or try and rent them before next August.
I have sold pins and stuff before using pay pal and find that is the easiest way to receive payments. Much easier than personal checks or money orders, no waiting for them to clear etc...
However, I have had people make claims to pay pal that the pin was broken etc, when I know it wasn't and pay pal has taken the money back.
What if I make a ressie and the people make a complaint when it is too late to put the points into holding? Is there any way to prevent this from pay pal? If this did happen I would lose the points and the money since pay pal will take it all back and refund it to the person. I don't know what I would have to do to dispute their refund.
Has anyone ever had something like this happen?
this rental has made me a bit leary but it could happen to anyone at any time.

I think you may be confused about the holding account. That is something you want to avoid because it restricts your use of the points. Provided you cancel a reservation 31 days or more prior to check in, your points will not go into holding and that's a good thing. If you cancel 30 days to 1 day prior to check in, the points go into holding and can only be used to book something 60 days in advance of check in, cannot be banked and will expire at the end of your current Use Year.

Also, I think you should trust your gut feelings. If you feel this person may bail on you at the worst possible time or that there may be difficulties getting paid, I would pass and find someone more certain of their travel plans. There are plenty of good renters out there. If you do go ahead with this rental I would establish a payment schedule up front that ensures you get paid in full before your banking deadline for these points. I would also specify that the reservation is nonrefundable. At least then if you don't get the money by the deadline or they cancel, you can either try to re-rent the points or bank them into your next UY and you have some compensation for your efforts.

If you are feeling uneasy about this, I would not go through with it unless you have a rental agreement from them that clearly indicates specific terms that won't leave you high and dry.

But, as PP said, there are other renters out there who might make it easier for you.

If you do go through with it, make sure final payment is due way ahead of any deadlines you have for the points (banking, holding).

As far as Paypal, I think that renting, in general, requires trust and while there are times when a few owners have had problems, I think it is minimal. There is no way to go into this without some risk and if you are feeling this could happen with these people, I would just say no.

There are hundreds of renting fish in the sea. Throw this one back and find another. Too needy.

Give yourself enough time to get a cashiers check from the non-member. Forget about PayPal.

When I rented I always told the renter that they could pay via paypal or cashier's check, everyone selected cashier's check. When I transferred points was the only time the person used paypal. Just a suggestion.

I would definitely trust your instinct also. Recently I was looking to rent some points out and had many offers. Some were very unsure of dates, location, type of room, etc..... I chose not to deal with any of those people. It just seemed very complicated. I found a very nice family going on their first vacation to WDW with their small children and we meshed immediately. We have a non-refundable contract and have been very open and clear about our needs.
We stay in contact and I am more than happy to give advice on the trip planning since I am a Disney addict. It is fun for me helping them plan out some dining choices and other things. It gives me pleasure working with people who are soooo excited to go. So much that instead of renting the rest of my points, I planned a summer trip realizing that I need my WDW fix. The Militry Tix discount didn't hurt either in the decision!

I have a really nice contract drawn up. Send me a PM if you would like a copy.

If you are going to rent to a stranger, this is the feeling you should have when you are doing it.
