MiFi Device in China?

Has anyone used a MiFi and SIM in China?

I'm looking at a few different Huawei devices (5330 (3G), 5573 (4G)). Best I can tell, the 4G won't work so it seems like we might as well get the slightly cheaper 3G model.

We're also looking at SIM cards and thinking about getting a Hong Kong card to get around any China firewall issues - I think the only thing we might use that may be blocked is Google Maps.

Looking to see if anyone has any first hand experience doing this.

The most often used things here that are blocked by the "great firewall of China" is google maps, google mail, and Facebook.

When we went to Shanghai and HK, I just used the wifi from the hotel to log onto the web and went without a data/SIM card. We downloaded a VPN app which helped with getting on regular websites and email.

You can also rent them; that is what we are planning to do--look up 3g solutions.
