Midwives now doing annual exams at my OBGYN office?

Personally, I have never had anyone BUT the doctor do my annual exams. In the past 8 years since i started going to a GYN, I've been to 4 different doctors adn they have all been the ones to do the annual exam.

I dont think I would have a problem with a midwife doing the annual as long as a doctor was going to see all of the results. It's just not somethiing i've ever encountered.

The nurse midwife, is a nurse with an advanced degree (Master's degree) CNM.
They (CNM's) can diagnose, prescribe and treat, they are in fact advanced nurse practitioners.

PA programs vary, some are master's degrees, others are not. To add to the confusion there are also midwifes that are not nurses.However the credentials CNM stand for certified nurse midwife as stated by previous posters.

I'm a nurse and I would much rather be seen by the CNM than the PA, but that's just my opinion. Most likely CNM's were OB/GYN / Labor and delivery RN's at one point. Ask the PA what his/her previous patient experience was before becoming a PA.

I think that the public at large is not aware of the amount of education and standards that advanced nurse practitioners are held to.Forgive me, I had to reply to this thread.

I would look for a new OB/GYN closer to home since you are trying to conceive. Do you really want to drive an hour each way for every appointment if you do become pregnant? Remember it's weekly at the end.

Plus if you are having issues TTC I would want to use a physician who can give you help in that area.

FWIW - I have never seen a midwife, but using a PA or NP doesn't bother me. I saw the NP for one of my prenatal visits because the Dr. got called in to do a c-section. My daughter usually sees a NP.

When I was in labor with DD, the hospital was very busy. When I first went in, a doctor looked me over and told me to go home. We didn't make it home before something felt really wrong and we turned around. A second doctor also said it was going to be "days" and I should go home and try not to overreact.

As we were getting ourselves together to leave again, a midwife came by to take away the fetal monitor machine thingy, took one look at the read out (the same one the doctors had looked at) and insisted that I be admitted. Long story short, the baby was in distress, severe cord issues, suffocating with each contraction. That midwife saved DD's life with a 30 second glance.

Actually, I've never heard of that before. But, if it happens in my docs office I will have to find another doctor. Just my opinion.

I have the opposite problem. I have had the same CNM that delivered my second child doing my exams for years, but after I turned 40 they told me that now I have to have one of the doctors in the practice. I felt much more comfortable with Nancy than any of the random doctors I've been assigned.
