Middle name on airline booking

I just noticed on both our flights this summer I listed only my husbands middle initial instead of his full middle name. What do I do?

Will the airlines put his full middle name if I call?
Does the middle name matter?

Technically, the name on the booking should match the name on the photo ID you will use to clear security at the airport. So, if the ID has just the middle initial that's what should be on the reservation and if the full middle name is on the ID that's what it should be.

Practically, if the name on the ID is John Quincy Adams and the name on the boarding pass is John Q. Adams you generally will not have any problems. Of course this all depends on the exact TSA person that is responsible for clearing you to proceed. Some will be more accommodating than others. In the end, it should not be a major issue.

It is unlikely that the airline will be able to correct the name on the reservation but it certainly would not hurt to ask.
