Use a microwave safe dish and put some water and lemon (or you could try other things like some cinnamon in the water) and boil it. Leave the door closed and let it sit in there to "steam" for a bit (I usually do 5-10 minutes) and it should clean up very easily and the lemon should help freshen up the inside a bit.
Depending on how bad it is... when it's not bad I toss a wet wash rag in there and turn it on for a minute or so and then open it up and use the rag to clean it. If it has gotten pretty bad and stuff is baked on I use some baking soda on my rag.

This is what I do - bowl of water and lemon juice, nuke for 3 minutes, then let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Remove bowl and wipe down microwave with paper towel. Either hand wash the glass turn-thingy or put it in the dishwasher.
