Mickeystoontown's Gang hits the Bahamas & WDW! Who gets choked or stuck this time?

Just got back from 5 nights in Nassau (Comfort Suites/Atlantis trip) on Friday night. Finally caught up on your report!

I loved your post on how the cruise came to be- from your very descriptive reporting of your conversation with John, to your itchy "modify" finger.

I think you made an excellent choice for an excursion for Nassau- since you are not big fans of snorkeling, this tour will still allow you to see the beautiful, amazing sea creatures of the Bahamas (BTW- your camera has an aquarium setting, which may be good for this portion of your trip)

We did a land tour during our trip too, and enjoyed it. We toured Fort Charlotte, not Fincastle (we went by this), I wish we had done both- Ben loves history.

There is also a pirate museum- we have gone a couple of times during past trips, it is ok. Probably about an hours worth of fun Admission is $12 per adult/$6 for Hunter(up to age 17). Again, near the cruise port but I can't remember exactly where. Here's the website.

http://www.pirates-of-nassau.com/museum.htm

Rum cakes ROCK!!! We saw the factory (I think it was on Bay Street near the cruise ship port, but not positive), but as a previous poster has said, you can probably find them around other places as well. We are partial to the Tortuga cakes, made in Grand Cayman, but available everywhere. Seriously, this was the only souvenir we purchased last week. One small Key Lime Rum cake for Nate, $7 declared on our customs form. :lmao:

Atlantis is awesome, but there is so much there that one day is truly not enough to appreciate it all. We were there 4 full days and never got bored.

That's a TON of things to choose from! I can see why you were overwhelmed. DH doesn't tolerate me talking about vacations during American Pickers, Pawn Stars, or Top Gear. Gotta squeeze it in during Dancing with the Stars :rotfl:

What a great tour choice! The boat looks really cool, and the driving tour is a great touch! DH and I took a (non-Disney) cruise when we got married. We loved walking around Nassau and didn't find it to be too scary at all. We even went to the Straw Market and had a blast. I've read on here that a lot of people are apprehensive to venture into Nassau on their own, but we had a great time and never felt like we were in danger.

Hey, us girls have to know when to jump in there between shows and talk vacation. ;) If we have time, I want to see the straw market.

Wow!! I can definitely see why you were overwhelmed with the all the different choices!!:faint:

But, I think you made a great decision!!The Seaworld explorer looks very cool and the tour sounds like a lot of fun as well.

I was definitely overwhelmed when I saw that looooong list!

I totally understand the hard decisions...I am trying to narrow down some choices for Nov...and change my mind daily.

Skip and I did some of the "see"portion of that excursion through NCL when we sailed them years ago.I wish I had a digital camera back then. I only took a limited amount of pictures.

I love American Pickers. We like Pawn Stars too but we can't stand Corey. He's a know it all who doesn't know much.

Isn't it hard to make a decision on a shore excursion? I love American Pickers too and used to watch Pawn Stars a bit but now I can't stand it. I agree that Corey is a know it all. I can't stand it when he offers a super low, insulting price to somebody.

OMG!!!! We have to watch those same shows!!!! Especially Top Gear, but the Brittish version, of course.....:rotfl2:

I know what it is.....great minds think alike. :lmao:

Looks like you made some GREAT choices!!! and wow!! I had NO IDEA there would be THAT many exursion options! :scared: I would have been TOTALLY overwhelmed too!!

As you can see, the list was really long. I felt like a kid standing on the cereal aisle. :rotfl:

American Pickers is 40 min from my home. Neat place!

Very cool! Have you been there before?

You may work with sharks, but I use to work with LOONS. :lmao:

:rotfl2:

That boat reminds me of the old 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea at MK but you will be looking at real things! Sounds great and so does the bus tour.

I hope that we enjoy it.

Your husband sounds like mine! Every time I started to ask him about a shore excursion for our cruise, he said I will do whatever, just don't talk to me about it! I couldn't believe it - to me half the fun is in the anticipation! At this point I have made all the choices (for us AND our friends who are going along). So I guess it is my fault if no one has fun! LOL (I'm not worried - I know they will love all my picks.)

Don't you just hate it when the hubby doesn't want to chime in? I am sure that you've done a good job researching the excursions and everybody will be thanking you afterwards.

I go on vacation and I miss all the cruise stuff! :( As you know, Jeff and I did our first cruise in 2010 and, believe me, you'll learn! It all seems overwhelming, but you'll get it.

I love the excursion you chose. It gives you the opportunity to do some sightseeing as well as enjoying the water. Fort Fincastle is cool..the view of the harbor with all the huge ships docked is amazing!

Make a stop in the Straw Market...if only to try out your bargaining skills!

We are hoping to do a cruise/WDW trip next spring so I'll be watching your trip very carefully. ;)

Be sure to let me know if you decide to do a trip report on your vacation. I know it's not Disney but I would love to hear all about it.

I remember your cruise report. Didn't you go to the Pirate Museum?

I know that you are super excited about your Spring trip!

Snorkeling, Sting ray city and Dolphin encounters have been our favorite shore excursions (can you tell we love the water?!) - I need to research the sea lion one - that sound pretty amazing!

Had it been me alone doing the choosing, I would have chosen the sea lion one. It sounded so neat.

Girl, I'm sorry, I'm soooo far behind!! Do you have any day in particular that you want me to head over to meet with you guys? A weekend day would be preferrable, after the 18th of May, hubby will be done with his assignment in Miami, and will be home full time, so whichever day is good. My guys' favorite park is Hollywood studios. I'll go back and read your info, so I can let you know if any day is better for me than another!! I can't wait to finally meet you!!! :)

I don't have my notes with me at the office but I know that we are going to be at Epcot on May 27th and I believe Magic Kingdom on the 28th. We'll head out on June 2nd. Hopefully, we can work out a time to finally meet up!

Hey Lisa,

just caught up with you again...
love the land and sea excursion great choice!
we did a beach day last year in the Bahamas but our table mates did a land tour and loved it...I loved their pics and descriptions...fun!

love the room choice!!! and holy moly what a porthole!

Hey Connie! I thought about just a beach day in Nassau but we decided we'd probably end up being bored and would wish we had scheduled something.

I overheard my kids talking today. They were planning our next year's vacation. They have decided on a cruise. I listened to them and chuckled to myself. Silly boys, don't you know your Mama doesn't swim very well and is terrified of being surrounded by water with no land in sight. Anyways, I was telling DH about their conversation tonight and he agrees with them.:scared1: I really don't want to do this but I am getting ready to go over to the cruise boards and start researching. I am going back to reread your PTR and soak up all your information. I have a million questions and I hope you don't mind me asking them along the way and after your trip. Like passports, tipping, parking fees, transportation, etc.

As you can see, I've been getting tons of great info about the cruise right here. Feel free to post any questions that you have 'cause they are probably something I need to know but have forgotten to ask. :rotfl:

I'll second/third this advice. Didn't do it the first time I snorkeled (on a cruise like 20 years ago). It was not comfortable sitting for the next 24 hours or so! We also ALWAYS wear t-shirts when we snorkel.

BTW- Lisa- my Olympus Tough did great on the trip (although it was a backup camera). Hope you are having some fun playing with yours.

I have a confession.....I haven't even tried out the new camera yet. :sad2: It 's been so busy at our house that I had forgotten. I pulled it out yesterday and told John that I needed to start playing around with it.

Welcome home! I can't wait to hear about your trip to Nassau. I have read about the Pirate Museum and thought about going there as well as the straw market.

You went to Nassau for 5 whole nights and all you had to buy was a rum cake? You are one lucky lady!

Caught up again!

Your plans are looking fantastic! We cruise in 40 days and haven't decided on our excursions. I think I'm going to do your method of printing and presenting the info to Joe. Anytime I bring it up he gets waaaaaaaay off topic. :rotfl: That boat looks really, really cool.

I can completely understand why you were overwhelmed. I was just reading the list, and I didn't even have to make a decision! Seems as if you picked a good for for your family.

That "semi"sub is a pretty interesting thing. Pretty cool the way you sit underwater!

The list would have been even longer if I had added the "observer" choices to the list. I think that we'll enjoy the semi-sub.

My little guy was so young when he went on his first cruise and our first time to the Bahamas. We didn't do any excursions. There was plenty to do on the ship, and dh and older ds went to the straw market. Boy, did they have stories to tell after!!

The excursion you chose looks great! We did one of those kind of boats as an excursion on Grand Cayman. Looks like divers will bring things for you to see too. That's what they did for us on the Sting Ray city tour.

We watch American pickers too! And storage wars!

Have to laugh about your critters. When we went to the keys, I had no clue they had salt water crocs!! Now it's not just sharks but crocs that keep me from tropical waters.

The rum cakes are very good!!! Our Bass Pro shop has the same brand of run cakes, but they rarely have our favorite...Banana!!! Oh the banana is soooo good!! But if you don't like the banana flavored runts then the banana is not for you.

I am hoping that they do have divers who will bring things over for us to look at. I haven't read descriptions that they do that but the pictures show them coming near the boat.

I love American Pickers and Storage Wars too! Darrell (I guess that's how you spell his name.) drives me nuts though when he'll say "that's a thirty dollar bill right there". For some reason, that drives me batty.

I haven't been to the Bass Pro Shop in at least a year but I don't remember the rum cakes being there. May just have to check that out if we go before we head to Florida.

This picture made me

That's a claustrophobe's nightmare right there! I would love to do that but why, oh why, did they have to go and put a roof over the seating area! If they had left it open to the top deck, I could handle it. I can just imagine one of those glasses shattering and that whole area filling with water!!! I know. I have serious issues! You'll have to let me know if that is actually what the boat looks like though. Please make sure to take note of that for me. I want to hear all about this when you get back. It looks really cool otherwise!

Oh and just when you feel overwhelmed with excursions in Nassau, then you have to decide if you want to do one at CC. ;) The possibilities are endless! :rotfl: I'm struggling with that issue myself. We are probably going to cruise again in the fall and I don't know what excursions to do. We loved Blue Lagoon so much that we might just do the beach day there, but if that submarine thing is not the death trap that it looks like to me , then that looks pretty cool too. Decisions, decisions...:upsidedow

Oh and you can get the Rum Cakes when you come back through the customs building getting back onto the ship if you can't find that store. We bought one in there from a vendor.

ETA: I just posted this snorkeling video from CC on my TR and thought you might be interested as well since you are considering it. It's one of the best youtube videos I've seen and really shows you all the hidden treasures you can find on the trail. Pretty neat stuff!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLqN4r-IZ0I

Yeah, I can see how the boat would be heck for someone with claustrophobia. My mother would NEVER be able to get onboard. First of all, she's terrified of water and second, she is claustrophic to the max. I'll be sure to come back with lots of notes and pictures so you can decide if you guys would like the tour.

Thanks for the tip on the rum cake being in the customs building. If we can't find the rum store, then I'll probably just pick up a couple there.

Thanks so very much for the youtube video. I have watched it a couple of times and I loved it. So much so that John and I bought a semi-cheap snorkel this weekend so we can practice in the pool. I know it won't be the same but it'll help us get a feel for what we are in for.

HEY! Those American Picker guys were here last year! They stopped in a town called Symco,(4 minutes down the road from me) and bought a sign and something else! The place they picked was a Thresheree grounds owned by 2 people I went to school with and the have a lot of old steam engine tractors and a whole village of buiildings like a store, jail, and such. The owners name was Jerod and the Dad was in a wheelchair.
Every summer in July they have a HUGE Thresheree where old tractors and stream engine tractors are shown, and they tractor pulls and it a BLAST! I spent many a teenage year having fun there!

Oh yeah, back to your plans! LOL, WOW! That's a lot of tours to decide! I can see how overwhelming it would be. I would probably do the dolphin one, just for Kadence. I do like the underwater glass boat one!

I need to ask John if he remembers that episode. I enjoy watching the American Picker guys crawl through all the junk to find that one special "treasure".

The American Pickers guys are from my hometown!!! We always say we are going to stop by their shop when we go home to visit my family. We haven't yet.

How cool! You've gotta stop one day and take pictures for us to see.

Ugh, I vividly remember that overwhelmed feeling that overcomes you when deciding on port adventures. It can be really stressful, especially for first time cruisers...However, I think you made a good choice. That boat looks really cool! :thumbsup2

I think we're going to enjoy the see and sea tour. If not, at least we can mark it off our bucket list.

My son would stop by their shop! We were driving on the highway when he spotted a white mercedes van. He wanted me to get up next to it to see if it was them. Didn't get the chance, our lane was going too slow and theirs too fast.

I would have soooooo sped up to see if that was them. Of course, I don't know what I would have done if it was. :lmao:

Wow, I didn't realize that there were so many choices! :scared1:

The one you selected sounds like fun. :)

I know! There were so many excursions to chose from!

Be more comfortable with the sharks. . .:rotfl:
Holy Cow that was a lot of choices, but what a cool one you made :)
Getting closer. . .whoo hoo!!!

I am counting down the days until we board the ship!

Well I've been off the boards for a little while. My computer is:sick: and in the hospital. I am using someone else's when I can but it seems whenever I can use it the Dis is down or logs me off and then I can't get back on. I had to sign back on to make this reply:(

So I don't think I will ever get "sweetie britches" out of my mind. Hey that could be your name on the Country Comes to Town reality show:happytv:

It sounds like there are so many decisions to make when you go on a cruise. I'm sure you all will have the best time!

I've kept you and your job hunting on my prayer list. Sounds like I need to put the computer on it as well. ;)

Oh yeah, he calls me Sweetie Britches all the time. He's such a sweet talker. :rotfl2:

Wow! That's a lot of excursions! I would have had a hard time choosing. The one you chose seems interesting. And though I've already swam with dolphins twice, I would have had a hard time resisting doing it again. I just love it so much!

I would have liked to have done either the dolphin or sea lion encounter but I knew that John probably wouldn't want to do either one. Oh well, I'm excited about the excursion we settled on.

Hey Brook! I saw all of your upcoming vacation plans and I know that you three are super excited. I know that if I overwhelm John with too many choices, he gets a bit frustrated so I printed out just the ones that I knew would make the top 10. It made the decision making process a bit easier. I actually thought about you when I saw the picture of the semi-sub. I remembered the picture of ya'll on the submarine at Disneyland.

Your Incredible Private Island Paradise Awaits!

I think that Day 2 of our cruise is the one that I am most looking forward to. That’s the day that we get to explore Castaway Cay!

CastawayCay_alt.jpg

I’ve often dreamed of lazing around on a beach chair, with this on the horizon:

disneykoolina_disneymagic.jpg

In my dream, the sun would be shining brightly but the temperature would be just right. The wind would be slightly blowing and tossling my hair. I’d close my eyes and when I reopened them, I’d be gazing at this hunka hunka burning love:

CapnJack.jpg

Yeah, I know that’s not the real Captain Jack Sparrow pirate: a/k/a Johnny Depp but I’ll take him. While I’ll be dreaming of Johnny Depp, John and Hunter will probably be dreaming of:

keira-knightley.jpg

or possibly:

images

Equal opportunity dreamin’. ;)

Just as I was overwhelmed with the Nassau port excursions, I was overwhelmed with the choices at Castaway Cay as well.

Bicycle Rentals
Boat Rentals
Castaway Cay Bottom Fishing
Castaway Cay Getaway Package
Castaway Cay Island Cruise – Seasonal
Castaway Ray's Stingray Adventure
Extreme Getaway Package
Float & Tube Rentals
Glass Bottom Boat Scenic Voyage
Seahorse Catamaran Snorkel Adventure
Snorkel Lagoon Equipment Rental
The Wild Side Teen Adventure
Two-Day Bicycle Rentals
Two-Day Getaway Package
Two-Day Float & Tube Rentals
Two-Day Snorkel Lagoon Equipment Rental
Walking and Kayak Nature Adventure
Watercraft Ski Adventure – Double Rider
Watercraft Ski Adventure – Single Rider

When I was printing out the Nassau excursion information, I also printed out a few for Castaway Cay. The ones that stood out were the Bicycle rental, Snorkel equipment rental, the parasailing (notice that it’s not on the list but I did find out that it was offered), the watercraft adventure and the Castaway Cay Bottom Fishing.

I knew better than to approach the port excursions discussion all at once since, as I mentioned before, American Pickers was about to come on and I didn’t want the discussion to flow over into our “quality” time. So, I chose to bring up the Castaway Cay excursions three or four days later. This time, I had John right where I wanted him, drinking a cup of coffee, dunking a homemade oatmeal cookie and waiting for Gold Rush to come on. Prime discussion time. :thumbsup2

The Watercraft Ski Adventure and Castaway Cay Bottom Fishing were front runners so we called Hunter in to let him cast his vote. He was in the middle of some game on X-Box 360 Live so the decision making on his part was pretty much “it really doesn’t matter, you guys choose”. Geez, lotta help that was. :sad2: So, it was left up to us.

As we got to talking, we ruled out the watercraft ski adventure because I know my husband. First off, he’s hard of hearing so he’d never hear what the instructors were telling him meaning any instructions, information, details, etc would go in one deaf ear and out the other. :listen: Second of all, the man is a daredevil as is Hunter so I can just see them hauling booty, spewing a stream of water behind them and ending up in the Castaway Cay brig. Check watercraft ski adventure off the list.

Then, there was the bottom fishing to consider. :fish: We are outdoors people and we love fishing so this was a real contender. We read the description more fully and realized that it would take 3 to 3.5 hours of our day. Did we really want to take that much time out of our Castaway Cay day? Hum? :scratchin

Time was running out....we only had 15 minutes before Gold Rush came on. In the end, we chose to just play our Castaway Cay day by ear. I’m thinking that we’ll end up renting the snorkeling equipment.

2620979793_fe8e12f6e1.jpg

Rinky Tinky posted the link to a fantastic youtube video of two people snorkeling and I am now determined to give it a try. However, none of us are very good at snorkeling so I’ve bought a snorkel and mask and we’re going to start practicing in the pool. Not exactly the same as snorkeling in the ocean but at least it's practice.

In the past, we’ve always enjoyed renting bicycles at the Caribbean Beach Resort so we may rent bicycles:

SAM_3988.jpg

I know, after reading RinkyTinky’s report, that we will want to seek out:

Pelican Plunge
Swimming distance from shore is the new 2,400-square-foot floating platform—adorned with nautical flotsam and jetsam. At this water-play area and platform, which celebrates the island's native pelicans, take a ride on one of the 2 twisting water slides and end up in the refreshing lagoon. Or, get soaked by the giant "bucket dump" that delivers hundreds of gallons of water on eagerly awaiting bathers beneath.

Castaway-Cay-Pelican-Plunge.jpg

Other than that, we have nothing planned except for a little dreaming ;):

***Up next: Is it over already?

I wouldn't mind sharing my cabana with Captain Jack either!:lmao:

I'm so loving your idea of relaxing! I need a lounge chair. I'll sit in my backyard and dream!

I think you made the right choice with CC. There is so much to see and enjoy there that you don't want to have your whole day booked up with stuff to do. The only thing we did there was rent the snorkeling equipment. It was the first time we had ever snorkeled and it did take some time to get used to it. After you get the hang of it though, it is so worth the trouble.

And I think practicing in the pool is a great plan. That's what my DD did over the summer to get the hang of it. With her being so young, I knew she needed to practice so she wouldn't freak out on us when we got there. After I got out in the ocean, I wished I had practiced too. :rolleyes1

I'm glad you enjoyed that youtube video. That's not even all the stuff on the trail either. There's lots of cool stuff out there to see. I can't wait to get back and try again to see what else we can find. And don't forget to check the tides schedule before you sail or ask a CM b/c it is much easier to snorkel at low tide if you can. I can't wait to find out what you guys do that day! You'll have a WONDERFUL time no matter what! :cloud9:

CC looks like so much fun! Aww heck who am I kidding, the whole cruise looks awesome. After you finish practicing snorkeling, make sure to spend some time practicing daydreaming too---you want to make sure you can visualize him perfectly and not wasting precious time out on CC :cloud9:

Your description of approaching John with plans made me laugh - it's a very similar process to some of our vacation discussion!

I think practicing snorkeling is a fantastic idea! The first time I ever went snorkeling, it took me a long time to finally get used to the equipment and everything, it wasn't until the very end of our session that I was FINALLY able to relax and enjoy it! (That's just me though...pretty much everyone else in our group had absolutely no trouble whatsoever! :rotfl:)

We did go to the Pirate museum in Nassau. We enjoyed it, but we are total museum people. I think it cost about $12 and it only took a couple of hours to walk through. It has some interactive stuff, traditional exhibits, and a pirate ship you walk through. Plus...it's air conditioned and cool! They had costumed "castmembers" (for lack of a better word) who were in character.

I highly recommend the snorkeling. Jeff and I did it on our island day. I was very skeptical as I got very sick when I tried it off a boat in Jamaica, but it was fantastic! We saw a ton of fish and a huge Caribbean spiny lobster. If it's like what we did, you get the equipment for the day so you can use it for a while, lay on the beach for a while, eat, explore, then go back snorkeling. We loved it!

I did a little price checking yesterday...just starting to think about our Spring trip. ;) Looks like doing both the cruise AND the parks is just a bit out of our budget right now, but I'm hoping some deals come out and we can manage to do both. Jeff is all about the cruise...I'm all about the parks. Our plan is to do a *GASP* non-Disney cruise so we can save some money and then do the parks for our Disney fix. But...if price is really a factor, we may compromise and just do a Disney cruise to try to get both the cruise fix and the Disney fix all at once. We'll see what happens....options are open and we have a year!

All caught up! WHen we went on our cruise it took us forever to decide between all the excursions. One of my favorites was the snorkling. I wish I had thought about trying the equipment out before our cruise. Smart thinking!

Loved reading about how you approached John about your cruise. And the upgrade button...That thing can be wonderful (and dangerous).

Welcome home! I can't wait to hear about your trip to Nassau. I have read about the Pirate Museum and thought about going there as well as the straw market.

You went to Nassau for 5 whole nights and all you had to buy was a rum cake? You are one lucky lady!

We are not shoppers! I don't like taking the time out of my vacation to go into stores and I don't like parting with the money. Especially when my son wants a $4 box of Angry Birds candy that I am sure we could find for about a buck around here! But the candy never made it out of the Bahamas.

So seriously, the only thing on that customs declaration was the rum cake.

And I'm not so lucky! I didn't get to have any of it!

Awesome choice not to book anything for Castaway Cay. It looks like such an amazing island with beautiful beaches and plenty to do!

You should all practice snorkeling in the pool and then rent the equipment (or bring your own since you are driving...). Snorkeling is truly one of my favorite things to do!!! I never know what I am going to see, but I am always blown away by the undersea beauty.

Since you get a lot more traffic on your TRs than I do, I'm gonna plug your backsacks over here in my new- Where in the World is Lisa's Backsack? segment.

P1000403.jpg

ignore the goofy look on my face

I love mine for travel- so handy!

Do you have any on display on your ebay site? Or is it mostly custom orders?

.

I thought I had fallen way, way behind but I only missed two updates! Not too bad! I remember tryign to choose excursions and there were so many options! Chris already knows what he wants to do on his senior cruise so I guess we will not have to worry about decisions too much! I love snorkeling! We went in Cozumel and it was so much fun! And I am not sure of Bahama's rum cake but the rum cake from Grand Caymans is pretty good!

I fully empathize with you having to pick the time and place for the discussions with John! Keith is the same way...as you have read! And Hunter's response was classic Chris! I love when they say whatever when I really want them to make the decision for me!! :lmao: I believe the play it by day plan is awesome! That is what I would choose at Castaway Cay! Oh...and the dreaming too of course!!

I think I would be happy at CC just sitting in a lounge chair looking at the view! :) Sounds like a paradise-like day!

I think that sounds like a perfect day going to the island and just see what you feel like doing. It sounds like paradise just laying on that beach!
