If you have not seen this Fantasyland attraction, you might want to skip this post as it contains-

-- SPOILERS --

One of the biggest surprises when an "unknowing" guest sees this attraction is that it is always billed as "MICKEY'S Philharmagic." There is no indication before the show that it will really be virtually ALL DONALD'S production!

It is so beautifully crafted!
From the moment you enter the movie theater, the audio "pre-show" sets a "Goofy mood" but its still about getting MICKEY ready for the show.

When the curtain is finally (accidentally?) raised and you get your first glimpse (still shown in flat 2D at this point) of Mr. D. Duck in a "low-key" position... it is hysterical!

And the film just gets better as it unreels.
This is the classic Donald we know from his "Bee Pictures" and his time-honored sparring with Chip 'n Dale.
He is our old befuddled buddy who "digs" HIMSELF deeper and deeper into trouble.
But still can't help but be a LOVABLE "little-kid" (duckling?) when he receives a bit of kind attention from other characters in the film (some NICE moments, here.)

And let's not forget the EFFECTS themselves.
In scenes above and IN the city of Agrabah, the "camera" and audience are "flown" on a trip unprecedented in prior 3D entertainment films (think Disney Quest carpets.)
It is BREATH-TAKING in the truest sense of the word. I gasp each time I experience it.
There were actually several times during the film where the audiences (at least the ones I happened to be with) broke into spontaneous applause (DURING a MOVIE!)

This film should be the new STANDARD of 3D (4D?) films at Disney... technically- advanced, and yet completely-satisfying in script and character-behavior.

It does Disney proud, and it does DONALD proud!
The true character of the "classic" Donald Duck is fully realized in the film.
He is exactly the flappable guy we grew to love in the early days of Uncle Walt's reign.
And the way that the other film characters relate to Donald (Princess Jasmine is so sweet to him) is a joy to behold!

In nearly ALL 3D films, the "camera" is locked and things happen in front of it.
But at one point in this show, the "camera" flies from high above... down and THROUGH a certain desert city (along WITH Donald).
This time WE get to "fly along" in 3d MOTION (with other sensual effects) and it is simply one of the most exciting film experiences I can recall.
I actually get a lump in my throat in anticipation as we reach that point in the film.
Many in the audience emit happy little screams as things whiz by (one of them is li'l ol' ME.)

Even the Theatre gets special treatment as at one point the actual FRONT WALL (stage proscenium and all) "disappear" and the screen opens to its widest aspect ever.

What a fine DISNEY EXPERIENCE is this whole presentation!

p.s. I'd LOVE to see a film like this shown in the "Soarin'" attraction. It would be a phenomenal experience.

I also agree..

I have to admit that Mickeys Philharmagic is one of my favorite attractions in MK.. Its a "must do" on every trip!

and I have to also say that I always reach for the jewels in the Arielle scene.. :goodvibes

I'll third that sentiment. I think it is AWESOME!

This is exactly the type of show/attraction that brings me back to WDW. 'Amusement parks' are all about the rollercoasters, WDW, IMO, is about this and others like it.

I completely agree, how amazing would this be with effects like you have on Soarin'?

How awesome would the feeling be to get that flying feeling and have Aladdin and Jasmine flying all around you as well?

Robo ~

You captured the feeling of Mickey's Philharmagic perfectly. I love the Agrabah portion of the movie and I always kind of let my body "go" to get that flying effect!! We were just at WDW a couple of weeks ago and that was the only attraction we did twice. While I always enjoy the other three 3D movies in the other parks, Mickey's Philharmagic is far surperior.

It's such an amazing show and one of the best additions to the MK in recent years. I'm actually interested if a person who has seen it disagrees and why? Does that person exist?

ITA!!!! I just saqw it for the first time in July during EMH am hours and after we saw it we went right back in and saw it again. I too always reach for those pretty, pretty jewels.

The bummer about MP? My DH has lazy eye pirate: and cannot see 3-D so I guess I'll be seeing it alone a lot next January.

For others with vision problems-

Just watching using the "Opera Glasses" with only one eye is still fun.

It's a great film in its own right, even without the 3D.

We also love it! Last trip, we did it 4-5 times and enjoyed it just as much as the 1st time. In fact, when I was asking DD what she definitely wanted to do this time, this was the first thing she said.

Great review Robo, I agree!
I knew that I would like Philharmagic but I had no idea how much I would like it! It was amazing, breathtaking and so underrated!
This is one of the things I'm most looking forward to next time we go (February 2009). Unlike my favorite childhood ride It's A Small World! I remembered liking that so much! But when I rode it again this past February I think I started chanting "just kill me!" at the end!

and most of Donald's lines are actually lifted from old cartoons as voiced by C Ducky Nash

i believe the complete guide has a table listing specifically where they came from

i'm surprised nothing is mentioned about what happens to donald at the end (i.e., the back wall) and how that's even continued on into the theming of the gift shop.

add to that all the posters along the queue which are meant to be the performances you are about to see (until things go awry).. and hilarity ensues.

we love it too... my dd made us go 3 times in one day!!! that is all she talks about til this day!! we cant wait to goback and see it again!

Found this on another current thread.

We loved it too. My DD2 1/2 really loved it. In fact, she wore the glasses and almost smacked the guy in the head in front of her trying to grab the apple pie! It was great!!!

I loved the smells along with the 3-D show. It never fails... As many times as I see the show, I always flinch when something comes at my face.

I can't count how many times we've watched this show and it never dulls me.

We saw it for the first time last Sept and I was also amazed by it. It also completely changed the temper of my toddler; before we saw it, he was cranky and afterwards, he was happily smiling and enjoying himself. He loved the film. He loved the glasses so much that we could not get him to give them back and so they came home with us. (They are in our Disney bag ready to take back in 3+ weeks!)

Now I know why it had huge lines when it first opened when we were there in 2003!

It is a definite not to be missed attraction at WDW for me and my family. If I miss other things for it I am A OK :)

This is so true, and important for people to know that are thinking of skipping the show because of vision problems in one eye.

My mother is blind in one eye, and has never been able to see a 3D movie before. I explained that I heard she could still see this one, but she couldn't imagine how, and really didn't believe me but "humored" me and agreed to go and see it. She sat there good natured in the beginning because it takes a while for the first 3D affect to happen, but when it did!! She threw her hand up to block the flute from hitting her! She was so excited after that!! It was like a seeing a kid at Christmas. She leaned over during the show and asked if the characters were in front of everyone, or did she have a "special seat" and they were just in front of her... awww... :goodvibes I was so happy for her. The first thing she did after leaving the show was to call my dad with tears in her eyes saying she had seen what she never thought she could. It is a special memory for us. :wizard:
