Hey folks traveling in August with the family including our 3 kids....9,9 and 4.

So which of these are a no miss if we only want to do one. I've seen Hoop De Doo in 2006 and know its pretty fun but how does it compare to the other 2? Any suggestions?

We really enjoyed Mickey's BBQ but I haven't been to the other two so I can't really comment. We definitely did feel that MBBQ was worth 2 dining credits.... if that helps.

The kids will enjoy HDDR show much more. The food at each essentially the same, not a factor either way. The show is the thing.

We visited Disney with my nieces and nephews who are your kids ages. We did both shows. They enjoyed both of them, however their favorite was the Backyard Barbque. The characters are there and get out and dance with the kids. The food was good picnic food for everyone to enjoy.

We are going in August too and doing HDDR because it is indoors - air conditioning and no chance it will be cancelled due to rain which is a big possibility in August. I'd like to go to the luau someday.

HDDR for sure....The food is very good and the show is excellent...We have been four times and would go back again....My kids and the adults love the music...We like that there is assigned seating so no need to arrive early and wait on line for a table....The air is also a must for eating in Florida in the summer...

BBQ in August is too hot to enjoy....We went in July and the heat made it unbearable...The food is really BBQ food...It isn't bad but not worth two credits on its own...We also do not like having to arrive over an hour early to get a good table...We wait in enough lines in WDW...We do not like having to wait on one for a table, especially in the heat we experienced....The show was cute but nothing like the HDDR....It is nice to see Mickey and friends but you can see them at other character experiences...The crowds around the characters were crazy...

The Lulu is also outside so that can be really hot too...The good thing is no crowds and feeling like you should be dancing (like the BBQ) but still really hot in the summer...The show was cute and there were a couple parts that were really cool...But kind of boaring at times...We did not really enjoy the food...But that could be our food preference more than the food...It just wasn't for us.

Would love more opinions on these dinner shows...

We have the Luau booked for March. Our girls are 4. They have seen the characters plenty so that isn't a factor for us. The food seems to be the same quality no matter where... so it's just the show..

The first time we had reservations for the Mickey's bbq, it was called because of the weathwr. We eventually were able to go and it was very nice. The Lua was a but boring for my youngest. The Hoop De Doo was our family's favorite. Best age range appropriate and indoors so weather shouldn't be a problem.

The don't agree about the food...The BBQ food is set out in a buffet containing hot dogs, burgers, beans...The Lua and HDDR are family-style...The Lua and HDDR have completely different offerings....Choice of food and preference of food should play a role in a decision....Not the largest role but still important...

HDDR has the best show in our view :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

What kind of show is in Hoop de doo?

It is based on a old western vaudeville style-travelling show...

Lots of singing, dancing and jokes... Audience encouraged (not forced to) to clap, sing alog, play along, and swing napkins....They have pieces of Americana sprinkled throughout the show...They also note special dates such as birthdays and anniversarys...They have a very talented group of performers...Show for all ages!

We love HDDR - we are a 3 generation family - and everyone LOVEs it. The food is good "down home cooking" - not gourmet, but goood. Fried chicken, ribs, mashed potatoes, beans, salad, corn bread and strawberry shortcake, and beer, wine and sangria included.
The show is an energetic troupe of players. Singing, dancing and corny jokes. It has been playing since the 70's and is great.
We have not been to the luau, but having been to a true luau, we have no desire to go.
Enjoy

I have never been to Mickeys backyard BBQ but I can say between the HDDR and the Luau hands down its the HDDR Love this show. I think kids will get bored with the luau I know mine did. Its a story line type thing and hard to follow. while the Hoop De Do is AMAZING. We loved this show and can not wait to go again is May.

Well, I was gonna do Spirit Of Aloha for my next trip, but now after reading this we have decided to go with HDDR.

I just have a question; whats the deal with "category 1,2,3" seating?

We will be on the Deluxe Dining Plan (if that makes any difference).

You made a good choice! We HATE the Luau and will never do it again. ICK! Sorry to those of you who enjoy it.
The different categorys is your seating chart basically. If you want the best seats in the house go with Cat 1. Food is the same for all and you can see the show from all locations. The only difference is location to the stage. It isn't a huge room so its not like you need binoculars. I like to book Cat 1 because I am short and this way I don't have to look around anyone. :goodvibes

No, the the Deluxe Plan does not make a difference with the shows...This will require 2 credits for each person...Cat 2 or 3 for the early shows and Cat 1 for the late show...If you want to do the early show I suggest you request Cat 3 upstairs....Great view up there...Cat 2 is on the floor towards the back...The view is fine but much better in Cat 1 and center Cat 3...

Keep in mind that seating is assigned on a first come first ADR basis...The earlier you book the better the table will be...They will require a credit card to reserve your table but will not charge you...Make sure they don't...Be clear you are using the dining plan.

We loved both HDDR and the BBQ. I would choose HDDR in August because of the heat and humidity. I'd rather be inside! Your kids will love either one.

We've never done the Luau, but have an ADR for next week! :scared1: After reading this thread, I'm second guessing our choice. Off to do more research...

No question HDDR is the way to go. Best dinner experience at Disney. (Experience, not food) Let loose at the show and have fun. Early shows make the night easier, the late show lets out fairly late and trans could be a pain(depending on MK closing time)

We've done HDDR and loved it! This time we are doing Mickey's BBQ. It'll be great either way.... It's Disney :)

ITA - HDDR all the way!
We've done the Luau - didn't care for it (those others do).
Never been to MBYBBQ - tho I think it might be geared to children younger than yours.
In August A/C wins over outdoors everytime!
Plus the show at HDDR is really good - corny, but fun! Think your kids will like it....
