Hi All,

We found recently that DS(4) has Dust mites allergy. Our doctor told us to keep soft toys away from him. He has soft toys of Mickey and friends. He is very attached to Mickey. He used to take him to bed with him and leave him in a pretend school before going to his preschool. We also took Mickey on vacations. Now we kept all soft toys away from him and told him that they went for cleanup and they might look different when they are back. He is ok with it, he says he misses his Mickey a lot and hopes cleanup will be over soon. We are going to WDW for his first trip by the end of November. We are searching for any Mickey toy designed for kids with allergies. We want to keep it in our resort for him when we arrive. If any of you are aware of this type of toys, can you please let me know.

Thanks

I would think the stuffed animals could be dry cleaned?.but you have to remember dust mites are in the home, rooms,. bedding, etc.

Best of luck!

My DS(10) has many many allergies, dust mites etc. We have no carpet, bed in cased in allergy mattress covers, pillows too. All of his stuff animals had to go. But his Stanley stuff doll was a no go. At 2 years old (non verbal) we made a compromise.

Stanley goes on Safari once a month sometimes once a week when DS is sick. He gets washed in hot water inside a pillowcase, with All free and clear. He then gets a trip thru the dryer still inside the pillowcase. Finally he spends an hour resting on the counter after being sprayed. We now use one by frabreeze that is non scented.

Now DS gets nebulizer treatments 2x daily with 2 different kinds, but actually changing his room allowed him to keep his one special stuffed animal.

Thank you. You are right. We are making other changes as well. We got the mattress cases and pillow cases as per our Doctor's recommendations. We are vaccuming and dusting more now.For our trip, we are taking a set of these cases and also requested VIP cleaning for the resort room. I found out about this option in these forums.

Thank you. Our son started out with milk, soy, wheat & nuts allergies. He outgrew all of them except for nuts by his 3rd birthday. We found out recently that he has dust-mites allergy when he had an asthma attack. He was on nebulizer treatments for 3 weeks and after that he is on maintenance medicine. We started with making changes. We live in apparment so unfortunately we cannot be carpet less. We are vaccuming and dusting alternate days now instead of once a week. We are still adjusting to all these changes.

I checked your PTR. Planning to follow your report. Congratulations on your trip. You are going to go to WDW close to our trip. We are returning back on 12/5. I wish you and your family a Magical Vacation.

It takes alot to get get used to. One thing that might also help is getting a one room air purifier for his room, and keeping his door to his room closed. Having the bed incased should help. :)

Thanks for following my report, we are very excited too. Have a blast on your trip. On a side note when we stay at hotels we always take DS's own pillow and sheets. Plus we take the room purifier. And Veloux blankets handle the weekly hot water washes the best. :)

Have you considered trying him back on his originall allergy diet to see if that might make a difference? I know that doctors say lots of kids outgrow their food allergies but what traditional doctors don't seem to recognize is that in some kids the immune response is still happening, just differently. For some kids, asthma and skin problems as well as symptoms that don't seem like allergies such as neurological problems including sensory or speach problems can even be tied back to food allergies and intollerances. I'm not saying that this is definitely the case for your son but considering his history with food allergies, I'd suggest you at least do a trial of removing the foods he used to react to just to see if that does help him. There's no health risk so why not at least give it a try for a month?

I'm horribly allergic to dust. Throwing out a favorite lovey is overkill. You just don't want a room full of dust collecting items like stuffed toys, throw pillows or bean bag chairs. Like another poster stated you can wash a lovey or two to keep them safe. I don't really febreeze anything except my minivan seats.
It helps to wash comforters often.

Thank you for this advice. We didn't try this for all foods, but did it with milk. We stopped dairy products for 2 weeks but that didn't help. We will do the same with wheat and eggs and see if it helps.

OT: Are these cloth as opposed to plastic? Plastic mattress covers can get mighty clammy.

We got "Allergy Control Pristine Complete" brand from the catalog allergy doctor gave us. Its polyster microfiber material. It also protects from bed bugs so we choose that.

It made a lot of difference after we put the toys away and also followed other cleaning efforts. We also got air purifier this week that we still need to setup. We decided to get the allergy free mickey that another poster suggested. It is out of stock now. I am waiting for the availability. Till then we are washing his mickey regularly

I have severe dust mite allergies. But there are ways around it. Its important to keep a good hepa filter with carbon filter in his room and also in living room/family room it will reduce your overall dusting trust me a good one keeps your air clean and will make a world of difference for him. Make sure you vacuum the house often with a vacuum that has a hepa filter. I can't do carpets but I do know they sell a spray you can use to reduce the dust mite count in carpets. If possible do away with upholstered furniture I know this is hard but I only have leather sofa's in the house. Make sure all his bedding is encased not only the mattress and box spring but also the pillows and comforter. Buy a comforter that can stand up to multiple washes and I know they sell some that are pretreated to be dust mite free also the pillows. I have silk drapes and you know what I do I pull them down bi weekly and throw them in the dryer on high they look great and it works. I do the same thing with my blankets and throws I launder them weekly and mid week I toss them in for a good tumble in the heat. Limit his stuffed animals and wash them often with the dust mite laundry stuff. I'd also look into how old he needs to be to start allergy shots its something that I've just started recently but I hope it will pay off in the long run. Also when your cleaning or dusting try to not have him in the house or at least in his room with the filter on.

It takes alot of work but once you get used to it. Its just another routine.

I hope he feels better.
