Mickey Mouse Lamp Post

Morning all..
Here is my creation............

77 Days 2 Hours 30 Minutes.... And Counting.....

Nice work!! The DW and I will be back to the Fort on November 7th. Maybe an opportunity to see it in person and to say hello.

Really nice!! Did you use PVC? Just wondering because I bought PVC for mine and realized when I got home it has a slight curve to it. Now I'm trying to figure out the best way to straighten it.

Your lamp looks really good. I just finished mine, after a year of working on it, for our trip in Oct.

For the base I used a plastic flower pot that I found at Lowe's, cut a hole in the top and pushed the post through. used a drill and put 4 1/2" holes in the base around the edge and then used some the metal tent spikes to secure to the ground. Is pretty sturdy when secured.
We have a small SUV so for traveling the base and the head will come off and go in the car, and the pole will be tied to the roof rack.

Vince, would it be too much to ask for some close-ups of the base? Some of the inside part of the flower pot?

Thanks, Bama Ed

PS - It looks Phabulous!

Not a problem Ed,

Here you can see 2 of the tent spikes that I used to secure the base to the ground. The hole that I cut into the flower pot, I used a box cutter knife and made the hole just a little tight so that the post would not move around in the pot.

I used a 1/2" drill bit to make the holes for the spikes, again they are a little tight.

10" spikes should hold pretty well at the front of the campsite.

A little hard to see in this pic but I did no extra work to hold the post centered in to the pot. I was thinking of taking and cutting a 2x6 to fit up inside the pot
about half way up with a hole drilled through and then securing with small sheet rock screws from the outside, but this works rather well.
The knock out at the base of the pole was there when I bought it, it is for a dusk to dawn sensor. I cut the pole even with the knock out taped my cord out of the way, that way when I place my lamp where I would like it, I simply push down on the pole and twist it into the ground, which will use the ground for support also.

The inside of the pot with the main hole in the middle for the post and the for holes for the spikes.

I used a 13" Dia. x 11" high plastic pot. Lowe's had the same pot but bigger and I decided to go with the medium.
The pole is a lamp post, also bought from Lowe's and came with the flag holder also. The box said heavy duty construction, it is rugged and does not weigh all that much. For the light in side I used a green 40 watt light bulb.

Thank you.

Your lamp looks fantastic! Great idea using flower pot as the base. You would not believe how hard it was to find 5 gallon milk cans. We finally found a one for our Minnie Mouse in Fremont, Indiana. DH winter project. :tiptoe:

Thank you.
Yes, my DH used PVC. Aw...that's such a bummer. Hope you can straighten it out somehow.

Here in Vermont you can find them just about everywhere. There is a guy that lives near me that has at least 20 in his yard sale. Never stopped by to see how much he wanted for them though, they have the lids on them as well.

Wow! Wish we had someone like that near us here in Michigan. My DH is getting requests from his Facebooks friends and from folks every time we set ours out camping for him to make them one. And he would, but is afraid of not finding the base.

I got lucky and found two 10 gallon milk cans with the lids still on them in the loft of an old barn on my property. My grandmother told me that my grandfather had put them up there about 40-50 years ago. I used one for my lamp base and still debating on the other one and what to do with it. I am pondering some modifications to my Mickey Lamp for October's trip and will update in my pre-trip report coming up soon.

The cans are hard to find, especially with lids. I have seen them go for $50-$75 each around here even without the lids.

We were fortunate and found ours in pretty good condition with the lids at $20 each. But your right, we have seen less quality (rusted through, no lids, etc.) ones go for $50-$75.

Would love to see what you do with any updates or your second milk can. Please post. :yay:

PVC pipe costs about $1.00 a foot. Why not just buy a new one?
It's probably a lot easier than trying to straighten a warped piece! :)
